The Extender EF 1.4X III from Canon is designed for select Canon EF mount L-series telephoto lenses. It increases the focal length of a lens by a factor of 1.4x while still delivering superb image quality. To ensure the best possible image quality in all shooting conditions, it combines redesigned optics, improved data communication between lens and camera and enhanced environmental protection. It is ideal for photojournalists and wildlife, nature and sports photographers who need to get close to distant and challenging subjects and it reduces the need to carry heavy telephoto lenses.

The Extender EF 1.4X III features seven optical elements in three groups and all optical elements have Canon's Super Spectra coating to reduce ghosting and flare. A new Fluorine Coating on the front and rear elements makes marks, such as spots left by water or fingerprints, much easier to clean than standard coatings.

To facilitate the accurate transfer of imaging data between the lens and camera body, the extender features an integrated processor which ensures all focusing, metering and ID information is available - allowing the photographer to capture balanced, well-exposed images. When combined with the latest range of premium Canon L-series lenses, these extenders enable AF accuracy even when capturing moving subjects. When attached, the 1.4x extender reduces the effective maximum aperture by 1 stop.

A carefully positioned lens release mechanism also makes it easy to mount the extenders quickly, reducing the time that the camera and lens are exposed to the environment. The extenders offer the exceptional build-quality expected from Canon's professional products, and are resistant to both dust and water, allowing photographers to use them in extreme shooting conditions.

Note: This converter is only compatible with fixed focal length L-series lenses 135mm and over, as well as the EF 70-200/2.8L, EF 70-200/2.8L IS, EF 70-200/4L, and EF 100-400/4.5-5.6L. Additionally, please see the lens and/or camera body manual for full autofocus compatibility information with the Extender EF 1.4X III.

Work very well with my 70-200 f4 L and my 7D with a magnification of 1.6 to 280 mm
I lose nothing in image quality as it can be perceptible. At 5.6 and a focal that it is even sharper. Uses for birds and photography fox and I am extremely satisfied.
But only compatible with the Series L, not all lens.
    Also very useful when traveling.
Even though it is a bit expensive but it is very good quality. You pay for what you have!
    A must to have!!
4 Start because it's not compatible with all lenses
    You won't regret.

Look the picture at 280 mm, F8, 1/500 iso 200
No modification could be at 5.6 too,and it's not my best one!

I wanted to extend the range of my Canon 100-400mm lens. The extender did that well. However, on this lens the extender disables the autofocus making it very difficult to focus on moving objects. Even when photographing still objects, it is difficult. In addition, the extender reduces the clarity of the photographs. I could get a few decent pictures, but tack sharp never happened. If someone has a smaller lens, this might be a great product, but for me it just didn't work out. I returned the item.

Comments about Canon Extender EF 1.4X III:

I use the extender on a Canon 100-400 lens. My only comments are why did I wait so long to purchase this; and why did I stick with my other extender for so long when the quality just wasn't consistent. The only problem I have is that because of the extra 8 ounces, I can no longer hand hold even in bright light.

      My recent purchase of a Canon 7D Mark II ~APS-C (1.6x Crop Factor)and Canon 400mm f/5.6 L lens
I bought this to pair with the Canon 400mm f/5.6 L lens and it is terrific and that gets me out to 896mm with my APS-C (1.6x Crop Factor)sensor.
The extender still makes for a comfortable hand carry package

Comments about Canon Extender EF 1.4X III:

I was quite disappointed that I could not use one of these with my Canon 70D with my Canon 100-400mm L lens, however all of that changed with my recent purchase of a Canon 7D Mark II which in fact will allow AF with that lens. I have been getting tack sharp results at 400mm with the Canon lens and although I have seen reports of diminished sharpness with extenders, that is simply not the case with this extender. I was very pleased after my first day in the field to discover that shots taken at 560mm were tack sharp and I was able to quickly lock on to moving targets such as birds in flight. I this extender as a must have in everyone's bag! In addition, I hand carry my rig with just a wrist strap (Black Rapid) for security and the addition of the extender still makes for a comfortable hand carry package that gets me out to 560 mm with my APS-C sensor.

Comments about Canon Extender EF 1.4X III:

I purchased the Extender EF 1.4X III to replaced version II. The sharpness is overall improved with excellent contrast and color. The only draw back is the steep price. I own two of these now so I don't have to keep swapping between the 70-200mm IS f/2.8L II and the 300mm f/2.8L II when I'm on assignment. I would have giving this product 5 stars if it is $ cheaper.

Comments about Canon Extender EF 1.4X III:

I had initially tried a 2x II EF Extender a couple years ago and returned it because the images were soft. After researching the 1.4x extender, I determined it should be better than the 2.0x. I haven't been disappointed. I use it primarily on my Canon 100-400mm telephoto and find it improves my reach dramatically. A little image degradation is evident, but images are very good quality. The extender does not engage autofocus on my telephoto, but I generally manually focus anyway. In the end, I have to do less cropping, and cropping degrades image quality more than the extender, so for me, it is a good purchase and an economical one at that. I know from my research it will function even better on prime long lenses, and I intend to add one to my arsenal in the future. I also believe it works better on my full frame Canon EOS-6D than on my crop sensor Canon, though neither produce unacceptable images with the extender. If asked I would endorse the extender to any of my Canon friends.

The image quality is excellent with my 70 to 200 F for lens. I highly recommend in as an alternative to a second lens.

Comments about Canon Extender EF 1.4X III:

Extenders have always been questionable to me. When you have a high quality, expensive lens, you don't want image quality degraded in order to increase focal length. The only compromise I can see when using the Canon 1.4X III extender is that you lose an F stop. But I don't see any loss of image quality when using the 1.4 with a Canon EF 135 F2 lens.

It is unfortunate that it is not designed for the Canon EF 70 - 300mm zoom but it can be made to work at the longer focal lengths though I don't really recommend it.

The extender is a lightweight addition to a camera bag – much lighter than having a longer lens to haul around. So if you need a longer focal length for occasional use and want to save on weight and on cash, this is an excellent solution.

Comments about Canon Extender EF 1.4X III:

I used the extender to shoot softball with my 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II zoom on my 5D3. The extender worked flawlessly: the 5D3 focused just as accurately as without the extender & exposure was set accurately. It fit the lens & camera perfectly just as you'd expect for a Canon product. The effective 280mm maximum focal length worked fine for shooting action in the infield, but wasn't long enough for the outfield. There was no degradation in focus accuracy or speed that I could determine. All in all the extender met all my expectations & I'm happy I bought it.

Comments about Canon Extender EF 1.4X III:

It simply snaps on between your lens and your camera.
I use this 1.4 on a 5D + 70-200 setup. I shoot from about 8 to 35 yards from my subjects. The 35 yard shot was not selling too well because it was just out of range of interest. By range if interest I mean the subjects could just barely tell it was themselves. So I needed to reel them in another 15 feet or so. This extender did just that and at no visible loss of quality to the naked eye which means none on the printed photo. Keep in mind the 1.4 will raise your F-stop depending on your setup. With my 4.0 70-200 it increases to 5.6. Not much of an issue if your shooting outside. You could also get by with it inside as long as your camera is capable of high ISO without lots of grain (noise). I am still referring to my own setup.
Bottom line, if you need to reel something in that's just barely out of range, this is the piece for the job. Thanks and enjoy shooting.

I use this with my 70-200 2.8 IS ii and 7D. I have been very pleased with this combination. It helps me out with some extra reach for photographing waterfowl and small-medium size approachable birds. Autofocus is quick and the resulting images are very sharp.

I haven't had much opportunity to use the item yet, but fully expect it to work with a 100-400 Canon zoom lens I will be receiving in a couple days. I've always had good service ordering from B&H.
