Comments about Vivitar DF-586 Dedicated Macro Ring Flash for Canon:

I selected this Macro ring flash for its listed compatibility with the digital Canon T2i I have.
The intended use is for Dental macro photography.
The only way I got good results was to set the Canon to manual exposure at T125, f29, and ISO 800 for whole mouth image, then adjust the ISO to 1600 for whole face, and ISO 400 for whole tooth images.
The T2i sometimes does not allow setting flash exposure (inconsistant recognition of the flash). I am exchanging this for a flash with full TTL automation and better exposure control.
Also, it runs down the 4 batteries quickly (less than 50 shots) then have to wait very long to re-charge (>> 7 sec listed)

Comments about Vivitar DF-586 Dedicated Macro Ring Flash for Canon:

The first one arrived dead, I couldn't get it it to work at all. B&H promptly replaced it and the second one is "sort of" working...

With fresh NiMH rechargeables, it works for about ten flashes. With new Duracel alkalines, it has a mind of it's own, flashing every few seconds and not syncing with my Canon.

I've tried contacting the manufacturer, but they have been completely unresponsive. This one is also going back to B&H, I think I'll look at one of the better models like the Sigma.

Comments about Vivitar DF-586 Dedicated Macro Ring Flash for Canon:

      Not bad for the money,
Flash does under expose in ITTL mode with the Nikon D300 but an exposure compensation of +0.7 to +1.0 EV for bright subjects and -1.0 to 0.7 for darker subjects show do the trick. I prefer Aperture priority and adjust the exposure compensation.
I wish this B&H allow you to post pictures like other companies.

Comments about Vivitar DF-586 Dedicated Macro Ring Flash for Canon:

When it works, it works great. The results are amazing, and it's a relatively powerful compact ringlight. Unfortunately, the power also works to it's detriment as it tends to heat up and cease firing after about 3-4 shots if done within a short amount of time, like a minute.

Comments about Vivitar DF-586 Dedicated Macro Ring Flash for Canon:

            Easy to use. Fast recharge.

The mounting threading of the ring to the lens is not so easy that you do not have to be very careful not to cross thread it.
