      bad vignette

      By Tony Dolo

      from Brooklyn

Comments about Vivitar DF-586 Dedicated Macro Ring Flash for Nikon:

With the flash firing I get a white vignette (flare) around the frame of my photos. With the flash not firing, but on the lens (50mm) I get a dark vignette where the flash is blocking light. Not a big deal when used with a longer lens like a 105mm.

Shooting with a Nikon 610 (FX)

Very easy to use and works well with my Nikon 40mm micro.
I am not a pro, so I don't need a sophisticate ring flash with a lot of controls.
It helps me to take better pictures of flowers and insects.

Comments about Vivitar DF-586 Dedicated Macro Ring Flash for Nikon:

I picked this up with the intent on macro product photography for my gf's DIY craft work. More sophisticated ring flashes (not LED flashes) are 4x more expensive, so the $90 price point and i-TTL features were the deal-maker. (I'm on a very tight budget.) It's paired with a Nikon D40.

Initial use is great to mixed -- the four-strobes are a huge advantage and give a professional end result on the photos.

              So here's the break-down:

              PRO's
              -great value
              -i-TTL compatability
-4-strobe feature. very powerful when it flashes at full power.
-relatively quick recycle, outside of a fully power burst.

              Not so worthy:
-very cheap build. very plasticky, bulky finish and there's something that rattles in the strobe component. Also it's a bit tricky to screw mount the strobe onto your lens. Don't expect this to last too long.

-can't control the output level. This is a huge disappointment. I guess that's the trade-off with a more expensive ring flash.

-flash power not consistent. Even if you have your lighting all tweaked and camera settings perfect, the macro flash will once in a while discharge at full power even when it didn't beforehand. Completely unecessary and random! WTH!

-owner's manual absolutely useless. I had to figure out by trial and error that the tilting control unit mimicks a bounce flash and 3D shadowing. This is actually quite useful but ends up in the minus column b/c the feature is hidden.

So I have another mixed bag review. I would recommend this to photographers just starting in macro lighting (like myself). The low-cost, i-TTL and performance are actually much better than other macro flash units in the similar price point.

On the other hand I believe that over time and for more experienced photographers, the Vivitar macro flash is just a set of training wheels. The short-comings will be a hinderance over the low price.

My feeling is that I'll eventually pony up for a Sigma EM-140 ring flash.

weak construction, looks like a very cheap material.

Didn't work with my NIKON d3000 with an minolta adapter and a vivitar 105mm manual lens. I'm going to sell it urgently.

Oh. I almost forgot. When the flash charges, there's a weird noise looks like it isn't working well.

                  I wouldn't recommend it!
