I do A/V at church, & we're looking to upgrade to HD. We currently use 3 cameras & 1 computer to input a mixer thru S-video. We use Sony D-8/Hi-8 1-ccd camcorders with Lanc jacks for remote control operation. I've been researching using Sony HDR series camcorders. These cam's have an AV/R jack instead of a Lanc jack, & it shares duties w/ analog output, so both can't be used at the same time. Unless somebody makes a combined Lanc input w/ S-video output cable, then the HDMI output into a converter to analog would be needed. I found several items to do all this w/- but don't know what will work. I found this remote when looking for ways to make my ideas work. I ordered this because the price & what you can do w/ it can't be beat!!! I tried it on my Sony mini-DV camcorder w/Lanc, & it works great! Even the focus feature works-(put in manual mode 1st.) I also tried it on my Sony HDR-CX160. It works great on that, too! Only I couldn't get the focus feature to work. The reason I gave it 5 stars is because I haven't seen anything else that has this many features for the price, plus having Lanc/AV-R duality!!! I will use this as back-up to my several Sony Lanc remote tripods I've been using for years. Yes, the zoom rocker switch does click-so what! use an external mic. The zoom speed knob is a little stiff-But, for the money, you can't go wrong w/ this unit!!! Yes, I would recommend this to a friend- Just remember it's limitations.

I bought this so that I could control my camcorder, a Canon HF G10 without having
to point the infrared remote directly at the camera.
This is ok if you are behind the camcorder but not if you are in front of it.
Most 3rd party remotes work only with Sony. Canon gets no love from 3rd party manufacturers, so I was concerned when ordering this because no one knew if it would actually work with a Canon Camcorder.
I also ordered the VariZoom VZ-EXTL20 Extension Cable 20' long, just in case it worked.
Well the good news is it WORKS with CANON Camcorders!
Ok, only a few buttons work with Canon and it does come with a Sony LANC adapter. The LANC cord is 14" long.
But what does work, works pretty darn well for the money.

The only buttons that work are the Start/Stop Recording button. The Rocker Zoom switch and the Variable Speed Dial for the zoom.
The zoom control is fixed on a dial so you do not vary the speed with your thumb.
The next nearest priced remote is a Libec and that costs almost 4 times as much.
So the Vivitar is a screaming deal and yes, it does work with the extension cord.

    Ok, what's bad about it?
Well for starters it looks and feels very 1980.
It's big and bulky and the so called mount for your tripod handle is a joke. Maybe
it will work on some tripods, but not on any I own.
The zoom switch is a rocker but it clicks audibly when you press it.
    How loud?! CLICK!
Well you know those bottle caps with the popup air seal in the middle that clicks when you press it and it drove your parents crazy? About like that.
That might be a deal breaker for some. I've found no way to quiet it.

So if you want a cheap way to control your Canon camcorder and you can live with a click everytime you press the zoom button, it's a good deal.
For the money it's a bargain even with the clicky zoom switch. I was hoping the Photo button would work, but it doesn't on my Canon HF G10.
I'll probably return it and buy the Libec because I need a quiet zoom.

      Pros

All functions worked perfectly with the Sony camera it was intended for
It had large controls, which is what I was looking for

      Cons
Zoom rocker clicks quite loudly in operation. Definitely not suitable in quiet environments such as theatres and stage performances, which is a huge pity

Comments about Vivitar 8 Button Remote Control:

This is an excellent product for the money. It gives me the same smoothness as my more expensive lanc. There is a click in the zoom toggle switch but I don't record from my camera so for me it's not an issue. However I found to reduce or eliminate the click don't press the ends to zoom instead place your whole thumb on switch with little downward pressure and rocker the toggle back and forth.

      Small remote, not for Panasonic

Comments about Vivitar 8 Button Remote Control:

DO NOT BUY IF YOU HAVE A PANASONIC CAMERA! Or at least to my knowledge not for the Panasonic AG-AC90. It won't work. The remote is half the size of your hand and made of cheap materials.

Comments about Vivitar 8 Button Remote Control:

Yes, the remote will work with Canon XA10 and G20's, but there's a catch. For some reason the LANC connector doesn't sit correctly in the XA10 or G20. However, if you get the Varizoom VZ-EXTL10 10' extension cable and connect that to the camera, then the remote, it functions perfectly. Don't ask me why. I hope this helps a few people. Other than that, the unit let's us power on/off our remote camera's and control the zoom functions by simply hot swapping from one extension cable to another.

The buttons make a little "click" noise, but nothing to worry, it isn't loud to get throw the microfone.

Comments about Vivitar 8 Button Remote Control:

I can't say enough good about this remote. Finally, a remote that gives access to all the LANC features, even the ability to turn the camera on and off remotely. And, the remote is inexpensive! Yes, it's a bit cheaply made, but at this price you can stock a spare. The only real negative is that the buttons make an audible "click" sound, even the zoom rocker. This is not a good thing if you're recording sound from the camera close to the remote. For my application this is not a problem, but you should be aware of it if you're going to locate the remote close to the camera.

Comments about Vivitar 8 Button Remote Control:

Based on other reviews I was expecting certain buttons not to work with my HF G10, which was true. Photo, search, and onscreen. However, this was second thought to the more important zoom control, which works splendidly. I didn't find the "click" sound it makes as annoying as others, but when recording music concerts, it's not noticeable, and I rarely rely on my cam's mics, but if you're one to be using this in a quiet environment while capturing audio with the cam's onboard mic, it will pick up the click sound. I was also expecting to have to work out a more secure way to attach it to my pan handle when I saw the picture thinking that it would be like a mic clamp, but it was much stronger than I expected and worked fine. I did have to buy an extension cable because the cord wasn't long enough to reach my cam, at least not from where I like to adjust the pan handle length. It measures 14". One weird thing is that the "on/off" switch will turn on the camcorder, but when switching it to the off position, the camcorder will shut off, then turn itself back on, then shut off, then turn itself back on again, etc. Only resolve is to pull out remote before turning off cam. Zoom speed dial gives slow creep zoom up to brisk. And the focus buttons worked as well. Convenient to pull focus without having to touch the cam. Nothing more or less than what I was hoping for, especially at that price. Awesome!

Comments about Vivitar 8 Button Remote Control:

This remote control works very well with all Sony camcorders that have either LANC 2.5 mm or AV/R 10 pin connectors and is rather inexpensive. A cable adaptor to convert from LANC 2.5mm to AV/R is included. This cable adaptor alone costs more from other sources than the entire remote with cable as supplied by B&H.

I am using a wired remote when I record video from a tripod and therby avoid that any vibration is transmitted to the camcorder when operating start/stop.
