Absolutely no one had any info on this gem so I decided to try it. Bought for my FX1000 HDV cam which has marginal on board audio. The design here is very nice and slicks up the camera a lot. Very nice cold shoe attachment; cable laces along built-in channel to plug in. I used battery power; it did not seem to respond to the phantom power supplied by camera (as advertised). Has excellent reach to speakers 10' in front of camera. Beat my Sennheiser for good pickup beyond 6'... I used to have to do lots of fix in post because of that; I think this will help alot. Recorded a nice full voice, slightly dry, bass was tight not punchy, no noticable hiss to track; heard very little noise as mic was handled thanks to built in rubber grommets -- Simple but effective... Superfulous noise (TV ) to sides dropped off nicely though not entirely during recent doc shoot. Was able to grab usable dialog in untrollable situation.. Sound of nearby refridgerator dropped nicely but not completely when low pass engaged via simple switch. Sony's under $500 audio value is usually low; I like this mic and would recommend it. Have not tried the included wind soc - I am sure I will shooting in Colorado.

Comments about Sony ECM-CG50 Shotgun Microphone:

I use this on my sony camcorder. I film horse clinics and yoga classes outside. While wind noise still gets through if the wind is blowing more than about 7 miles an hour, it is amazing what the mic can pick up, and the clarity of sound is very good considering the circumstances. Has added a much needed professional dimension to my being able to shoot outside. Highly recommended.

Comments about Sony ECM-CG50 Shotgun Microphone:

I used this mic mounted on a Sony RX10 and if performed beautifully! I love the fact that you can power this mic with the plug in power directly from the camera eliminating the need for another battery to carry around or replace. Great full bodied natural sound! I've been an audio engineer for 30 years and this sounds like the XLR version shot gun mic and I would highly recommend it as an option to the Rhodes and Shure mic options.

Works great, little or no handling noise from the mount. It does pick up autofocus motor noise, but its minimal. Got it for interviews in the field an so far it performs well.

This microphone is well shielded in its mounting, has a good rumble filter, and flexible attachment options. It is very compatible with my Sony camcorder. The previous Sony mic I had had major hum problems with the phantom power from the camcorder, as well as poor shielding, so this is a good upgrade.

Comments about Sony ECM-CG50 Shotgun Microphone:

Most of my videos are shot outdoors and I like to pick up as much of the ambient sound as possible. I was looking for a mic that would provide clear and accurate audio while eliminating most of the wind noise. This product does that. It appears to be well designed and does not have a large clunky appearance. The furry wind cover does eliminate more of the wind noise than the foam mic wind covers. I know this mic was designed for Sony cameras and their "hot shoe" and that shoe is made out of plastic and may not be that strong. It's the only weakness in their design and the one thing that concerns me. However, it's the best in this price range, in my opinion. You can pay more and may or may not get a better microphone. Yes, I would purchase it again and would recommend it to my friends. It is a great addition for my Panasonic TM900 camera. I gave a four star rating because of the plastic shoe design.

I bought this micophone to record videos of my doughter who just begins to talk (very funny stuff!). I use sony A77, its mic is not bad, but I wanted a better quality and a more directed mic. Although I expected ECM-CG50 to be be a good quality mic, its performance by far exceeded my expectations. I played recordings on my hi-fi system and was very impressed by clearness of sound. Very natural sound.

                                    Highly recommended.

Comments about Sony ECM-CG50 Shotgun Microphone:

My entry to video production came from having been on-camera doing live news, cable tv and even a show of my own with History. I watched guys and their gear for 10 years. I know pro level stuff, and this isn't it. But for internet viewing (FB, websites, etc.), my clients get great audio and I get a piece of equipment that isn't chunky in form, hyper-sensitive in function, and gathers clean audio at 3 feet, 10 feet, and my St. Bernard barking at 70 feet! It's a solid value. If you're looking for a high end Sennheiser or the like, you shouldn't even be reading this... just sayin.

Comments about Sony ECM-CG50 Shotgun Microphone:

I've got my ECM-CG50 Shotgun Microphone attached to my camera now. In doing some tests, I've found that this mic does well to pick up good quality sound when recording interviews and things of that nature. As should be expected, a mic of this nature is not good for use in environments with a variety of sounds coming from different directions. An omni would be better for that. But this mic will do what you'd hope a shotgun mic would do. It picks up fairly directed sound from the front and is good for those who aren't rolling in the ough and who are on the go.

I was pleasantly surprised with this microphone. I use it with my NEX-VG20 and I love how it is powered right off the camera. I will be using it as well with a boom pole so I tested it out with a high quality, 25ft extension cable. It remains powered and quality is exactly the same. It's a great, basic shotgun that does the trick.

There is some humming in the background but the background but the mic picks up everything so well that it could just be the room noise. I have yet to use this outdoors.

Received my mic one week ... used it for three separate shoots the next week. Easy to use, light weight ... the product seems to deliver the goods ... at an economical price. I'm using my ECM-CG50 with my Sony NEX-VG10 camera. I suppose the biggest issue I have thus far is I kind of wish it had a light that showed that it was on. Other than that ... no issues.

You know the old saying you get what you pay for.....well that doesn't apply here. I mean I got MORE than what I expected. I am very impressed by the quality sound and the construction of this mic. The cord isn't some flimsy 24gauge speaker wire with a mic input on the end. I love the wind sock that came with it. This really helps on windy days and the added filter switch makes for better sound quality on extremely windy days. If I had one thing I wished it had, that would be a power on LED light. Other than that I would definitely endorse this product. Anytime, Anywhere!
