The Shape Composite Stabilizer Camera Support is a hand-held professional camera support device with an adjustable camera platform. Featuring the Back Pad, Adjustable Composite Shoulder Pad, two 15mm male-female rod (6"), Rod Block, Off-set Rail Block, 15mm Rod Riser System, Quick Handle, and Telescopic Support Arm with Rod Block, the Composite Stabilizer secures the camera firmly with accessories for mobile applications.

Weighing 0.35 lb (0.160 kg), the Back Pad is a professional video accessory that offers augmented camera support stability and comfort. Padded on one side, the pad is attached to the shoulder rig via a screw knob. You can adjust the position of the Back Pad to suit your body type with a vertical adjustment range of 1-1/4" and a horizontal adjustment spanning 360°. A screw knob allows easy attachment and removal of the Back Pad from the support with a 1/4-20" threaded hole.

The Adjustable Composite Shoulder Pad rests on your shoulder such that the body supports the weight of the camera and its accessories and is padded for superior comfort. Attached on top is the Rod Block, which is used to hold 15mm rods and attach a camera platform to the front of these rods. The stabilizer also includes two 15mm male-female rods (6") that have female and male threaded ends (1/2-13").

The Rod Block features 2 screw-threaded holes that are used to attach a component such as the Quick Handle to 15mm rods. Allowing the component to slide along the rods, the Rod Block secures the component attached by simply tightening a small red knob. Made of lightweight anodized aluminum, it is strong and durable.

Used to attach the Paparazzi Riser to the left or to the right of the 15mm rods, the Off-set Rail Block has 2 screw-threaded holes on its side used to screw the Off-set Rail Block to the Paparazzi Riser. The 15mm Rod Riser System is used as an accessory for matte boxes, 35mm lens adaptor, and follow focus mechanisms. By supporting the weight of these accessories, it avoids additional weight from being put on the lens. It is composed of a Paparazzi Riser, Sliding Rod Block, and two 15mm aluminum rods.

The Quick Handle + Rod Block is a professional video stabilization accessory with 2 camera handles, each providing an individual rotation angle of 360°. You can attach the handle to the camera platform using a simple screw knob. A simple push button located at the articulation allows easy attachment and removal. Combined with the anodized aluminum Rod Block, it offers composite camera support for all 15mm rods. You can achieve precise positioning by sliding the Quick Handle along the rods and tightening the small red knob located on the Rod Block.

The Telescopic Support Arm + Rod Block includes a Manfrotto 233B Camera Mount Bracket with a 4" cup that provides a large surface contact area and a Shape Rod Block. Augmented stability and versatility is provided for camera support using the Telescopic Support Arm that can be easily attached to the shoulder rig via an "L" bracket. You can extend the Telescopic Support Arm from a length of 14-20". Rotation of 360° along the vertical and horizontal axes is possible via the rotating arm. Easy attachment and removal of the cup attributes versatility to the Telescopic Support Arm. Removal of the cup enables you to use the arm for supporting accessories such as a microphone or camera light.

Shape obviously cares about quality of their products. This Shape Composite Stabilizer is very well made, and is quite versatile when working with smaller camcorders like my Sony EX1. There are many camera support systems out there for smaller rigs like mine but, if you're planning on shooting for any length of time, you need to get one that has the belt and stabilizer bar system on it, as this one does. It makes all the difference in the world. Would I change anything about the design, maybe, but not much. The cup at the end of the stabilizer bar works nicely when you want to place it on a table or other flat surface, but it does get a little uncomfortable on your body when using it with the belt over a long period of time. Overall, I'm very pleased with the Composite Stabilizer. The only big negative I can think of is the price! Sitting close to $900 for the rig, add on the belt and some accessories and you're shelling out a large amount of money. If you've got the money, buy this rig versus the other ones like it out there. It is definitely worth it. But I have to admit, with a depressed economy, this was a hard one to swallow with the price being this steep!

Other than the fact that the unit came with two identical handles (meaning two for the same hand), the unit is pretty good. It does scratch easily, but I knew it would do that as it is black. Scratches don't matter to performance, and you don't get any "gear style points" out there. As for the handles, you can tell they are two for the same hand by the way they feel and are indented -- there are grooves for your thumbs that only feel right on one hand, and looking at them closely you can tell why this is. It was not worth the effort to send the whole unit back for this issue, as I needed it right away the day after it arrived (hence desiring expedited shipping), which I got and played into my decision making process when buying.

Comments about SHAPE Composite Stabilizer Camera Support:

Just beginning to learn how to shoot video with the stabilizer. Impressed with all the adjustments and the quality feel of the support. Wish it had a bit more instructional manual with it, but making up for that by watching online tutorials.

Comments about SHAPE Composite Stabilizer Camera Support:

I have only used the rig for a few hours on a shoot, but everything felt very comfortable. The arm extention is really the differnce maker with this rig, you're able to balance the rig on your shoulder without any hands, which saves your back and shoulder from any stress.

One downside would have to be the screw that goes directly into your camera, its a very tight space under the camera platform, and anyone with large figers will have trouble mounting the camera onto the rig.

Comments about SHAPE Composite Stabilizer Camera Support:

I've used this guy for a mix of doc and narrative work on a 7D and been very pleased with its performance. It's stood up to run and gun work in the mean streets of NYC and the wilds of Tanzania, and even handled handheld in a helicopter. The build quality is high, the rig is flexible to various configurations, and the rosette-style handles are a smart, sturdy, and far and away my favorite feature. I wasn't convinced of the belt/stabilizer system, but while it isn't always optimal for every situation, it has saved my arms (and made my shooting better) in long handheld scenes.

The rig isn't perfect. The handles could be longer/lower/lighter, the shoulder pad could use more padding and more range of height, and sometimes it's hard to get at the tie-down on the riser block. And of course, the prices could always be better (especially for the accessories/add-ons). But you won't get a sturdier, more flexible, less confusing rig for anywhere near this price range. And frankly, it's lack of proprietary and overly complicated design (I'm looking at you, Zacuto) beats a lot of it's more expensive cousins.

There's always room for improvement, but these Canadians make a great rig for the price. Buy it (or one of Shape's other systems) with confidence.

There's quite a lot of these out on the market. Zacuto's models might offer premium quality this comes at a cost. I like Shape's rig becuase of it's rigid design but perhaps the best thing is the waist support you get with this- I have really bad lower back problems and this has helped me get through day long shoots without virtually any pain. The small downside is the plate on the end of the waist support is plastic and a but has chipped off. The rest of the rig is still very sturdy and working splendidy though. Highly recommended.

It does what it's supposed to do, but I think it a little heavy for the job. I know, I know. You have the support bar and the belt but it still felt heavy to me. You can't fit any sort of zoom/focus controller on the handlebars either.

Comments about SHAPE Composite Stabilizer Camera Support:

Its all one needs and more - designed with the shooter in mind and the price is affordable. The other comparable quality rigs were way more expensive. And there is real phone support from professionals
