I purchased this Archos 43 to replace an aging Creative Labs MP3 player. I figured it would be a far superior media player, and I was right. This unit has a very responsive touch screen, great sound quality, outstanding battery life, and nice looking video playback. Installing the Google marketplace was a snap (look for gApps4Archos.apk), and I now have full access to any Android app I want. This is a great alternative to a smart phone. I don't really want or need a data plan, but having smartphone functionality in my portable media player is awesome. I'm working on ripping and converting my 200+ CDs and importing them to the player. I highly recommend using MediaMonkey in conjunction with this player...It makes transferring music (along with track titles, album artwork, etc.) a breeze. Finally, I'd like to add that the USB host function is a great addition to this device. With the proper cable you can backup images and videos from your digital camera without the need for a computer.

I needed a new portable media player. Such as an MP3 player. I found this listed under MP3 players and read up on the item and figured it would be awesome to have a touch screen with internet and the android OS. Truth was, it was awesome.

You could browse the internet, get apps, (only from their own app library) and do more. The thing that just ruined the entire item, was the touch screen... It's resistive. I thought nothing of it when I ordered it, till I actually got the item and used it. The touch screen was SO inaccurate (I calibrated the screen many times), and not to mention flaky. I would be using the keyboard, and I would hit; for example, "K" it would type "ml&3".

Scrolling through music to play was also an impossible task, when you would try to find the album you wanted, it would quickly jerk the list around and randomly start playing music you didn't want to play.

I tried different methods of using the touchscreen, pressing gently, pressing hard, tapping here and there. Nothing improved it. Really made the entire product not worth the $200+ spent on it, because the touchscreen is what you use to get around in menus, and do everything with the device, yet it's impossible to get it to work without screwing up any simple task you want it to do.

Also, as expected, there is nothing to keep files updated and synced with your device. Also, I could not find a way to store files on the flash memory that I added to it... I didn't spend too much time on that though. The main con though is there's nothing to keep music up to date other than you manually updating your library yourself. Just another thing you would have to think about whether you think it's worth it or not.

I got a refund on this.

Comments about Archos 43 internet tablet (16GB):

I have had the Archos 43 for about 3 months now and with the upgrades and availability of Adobe Flash Player 10.3 since I first received it, it just seems to get better with time. It now offers plenty of entertainment with Netflix movies, Pandora radio, TuneIn Radio, as well as the TV and music I've downloaded into this small, easy to carry internet table. For more serious activities, the available apps include plenty of office tools, and the ability to download contacts and sync with my desktop calendar. So far all apps I've download have been free, so this table is definitely a low-cost option. With Skype, it becomes a low-cost international telephone you can use just like any smart phone, except though the internet. Perhaps someday, I'll end up having all these feature in my cell phone...but not yet; For now, I rather carry a small flip phone plus this internet table...it is a lot cheaper and easier to use. I'm even beginning to like the resistive screen. It does takes getting used to, but there are times that using a stylus is preferred...something you cannot do with a capacitive screen.

I found the tablet to be great, with few limiting features. However one thing I found, was that the Archos Apps were limited, and I was unable to get Google Play to install to access better Apps online.
You may also want to buy a Micro USB to Female USB To Go adapter to use a mouse and other USB devices with this Tablet.

Comments about Archos 43 internet tablet (16GB):

I brought this product primarily to use as a reader (I currently do not have a smart phone)when I don't want to carry around my nook color which works well once your able to download the apps needed. The reader already included is pretty good and many public domain books are available for free.

In comparison with the Nook Color, the nook color has 100% far better application selections. I'm disappointed in the apps store choices with the Archos. I like using it for gaming as well but so far the games I've downloaded are disappointing. The free game included is good but is only a trial version.

The touch screen is a little challenging to get used to using. I find the same problems with or without the screen protector so leaving it on.
Sometimes it would go ahead of what I would like to do and end up using the "back key" often. Definetly works better using your nails.

Very sensitive when you flip it horizontal to vertical. When reading the build in instructions it would scroll back to the top when flipping if I would make the slightest move so it would be better to lock the flip mode when using it.

The mp3 player for me is ok. Again a little hard to maneuver the touch screen while playing one song to check out the next without it clicking on it. The first time I used it it had some glitches but works ok now.

No matter how you flip the camera you have to be careful not to cover the lens while taking a photo since the shutter always end up by the side near it. No way that I know to override this.

If you would like something economical that does not require a monthly plan and includes wi-fi (which is pretty good) it's ok for the price but definetly compare to other products what your overall need is in an internet tablet whenever possible before deciding on one.

Before the Archos 43 I used a pocket PC; it broke and I bought the Archos. Works fine, battery life appears to be good. Have been trying to find useful apps and am now able to read/write Excel spreadsheets, Word documents. Email works OK except deleting an email doesn't delete it from the device or from my inbox. Hopefully not cockpit error.

Comments about Archos 43 internet tablet (16GB):

As a partner to the Archos 9 which I own, after a week of use I am satisfied with what I got. I am using it as a replacement for Dell Axim 51 which is no longer on the market. I got back all the features I am accustomed to using and more. The ability to connect to my networks without having to use an extra card is favourable. Also the number of programs in applib are definitely more than I have found for the Windows 6 mobile OS.
The one complaint is the inability to get anything from the Android Market.
The 1GHz processor is great for such a small unit and 16GB is far more than I will ever need (I survived on 256MB using a SD card in the Axim).
One other thing - the resolution is far too low for still pictures but who want to use a tablet for taking pictures when there are so many good cheap cameras around?

            - primarily use for music, but also sync with my work computer to keep up with my calendar, contacts, and email
            - you have to upgrade to froyo *note
            - the keyboard is very sensitive...you will want to download a keyboard from the market (better keyboard is a good place to start)
            - can be slow - even after you close a program it will keep it running, so you will need to be sure to completely close out programs if you are gaming or downloading on it

Comments about Archos 43 internet tablet (16GB):

The products touchscreen is a bit hard to manage, i found using the tip of my fingernail is best opposed to using the bottom-side of ones finger. Besides that the Archos 43 is easy to manage, easy transfer, though the online aspect being wireless seems to not be its strong point. I have many problems accessing the web or the appstore on the device, having it constantly quit on me.

If you're wanting this device for texting, I would look elsewhere. I bought this for the purpose of being a audio-player with some added fun stuff, if you're one to look for it just as a travel assistant for video/audio, i highly recommended it.

Comments about Archos 43 internet tablet (16GB):

Email, internet and many applications are easy to use and improve using free or paying apps. Google Android Market does nor come with the device, but a free app gives access to it.

Comments about Archos 43 internet tablet (16GB):

The Archos 43 turned out to be a great device. I purchased it specifically for travel and also as a pocket-able wifi tablet using a 4G hotspot. I took it on a diving vacation as my only computer - I used the USB host to backup my underwater camera SD card, used HDMI output with BT keyboard to display the pictures/video on a large screen, used a bluetooth speaker to listen to music on the beach and had consistent wifi access to the internet. It did everything I needed without having to care around a laptop.

The small size but with a lot of flexibility is the greatest asset - Micro-SD slot, HDMI output, USB host mode, kickstand, BT and wifi make the Archos able to handle most tasks from a device that disappears in a pocket.

There are a couple downsides (but all have easy fixes) - the touch screen takes some getting used to and was much better after adding a better keyboard app. The default app store is lacking but can be replaced with the full Android Market in a few minutes. The default Android launcher used has performance issues (lag when rotating) that I fixed by switching to Zeam. The WiFi antenna is where your hand is when its held naturally - to get the best range you have to flip it over, the screen rotates correctly, but its something of a strange way to design the device. It would be nice to have GPS and compass but at the price point I can easily live without these.

Overall this is a good device for travel.

Was planning to use it for Music, Android Apps, and checking work email. However, it had a horrible time connecting to any wireless source and the the sound quality so poor that I wondered if there wasn't a major hardware defect or some other abnormal problem. Since those were my two main needs, Internet and Music, I had to send it back.
Believe me, I tried updating it, flashing it, and all of the troubleshooting available but nothing improved. Hopefully the unit I received was a lemon and everyone else's experience is better. I was so excited to buy this Archos but oh so disappointed!

Comments about Archos 43 internet tablet (16GB):

Upon opening the box, the first thing I noticed, no front camera. I knew it but it`s only when I had it in my hand that I realised how important a front camera is for a device of this sort.

Next think, it doesn`t come with the android market app. I mean what`s the Android OS without the market. I does come with a App application but it as so little apps available... It`s only when you install the Android Market apps that this device becomes interesting.

This is my first gadget of this time, 4.3 inches is too small for the keyboard. I gotten better at it but it is still very frustrating to use. To the point that I postpone repling to email until I get to a PC.

It freeze once in a while, enough that I can`t rely on it to use it as a alarm clock. Maybe it`s caused by one of the application I downloaded. I`m still looking in to that.

Speed wise for browsing the web, it`s is too slow. Most pages takes between 10-30 seconds to show up.

Archos is supposed to be king at supporting various format, audio and video wise. First video I tried to play, says it uses AC3 audio and that I need to purchase a plug-in. WHAT ?????

When you exit an application, most of the time it takes around 5 seconds for the icons on the main screen to show up. That`s too long.

Battery wise, I`m happy with, 48 hours with wireless on (although it`s in sleep mode most of the time)

The music app is weird, just not fun to use.

                    This isn`t a tool, it's a toy.

The 16G is storage is plenty for my use. Nice to see that it support WPA-Entreprise and Exchange server. However it doesn`t support Exchange server via HTTP.

I should have waited, internet tablets e are in their infancies. This device just doesn`t cut it.

Basicly it turned out, for me, it`s a MP3 player with some extras.

I would not recommand this product not because it`s bad, but because it`s simply not worth the price.

Everything I read in the specs were right on point with what I received. It plays every video type I throw at it and connects to my Linksys wireless with WPA2 encryption with no problem. It doesn't want to connect via WEP connections, but that is ok... WEP can be cracked in 4 minutes by script kiddies. It has been a great tool to access the Internet via Wifi in hotels while traveling or at a family members house. I highly recommend this device to anyone interested in Android but doesn't want to be tied down to a data plan with a cell phone provider. This device uses the AppsLib Android Store instead of the Google Market. AppsLib only has about 1/3 the apps of Google Market, but it was easy enough to load the Google Market since it is an app itself.
