Comments about Roland SD-SH01 GAIA Synthesizer Sound Designer Software:

This is a great editor for Gaia samples. Without this it's hard to keep track of what settings are current for each of the 3 banks of oscillators, LFOs, and ADSR envelopes for the filters and the amps.

With this you can see all three sets on the screen at the same time which makes patch production much easier. It both tracks changes made with the physical sliders and can also save patches to disk and the onboard memories. That makes it easy to create libraries too that exceed the onboard patch count of 64 and quickly load them.

In addition, it makes it easy to turn off any individual patch modification - e.g. the filter envelope for a single patch - leaving just the amp envelope and LFO, or, the amp envelope and LFO just leaving the filter. etc.

Using this it is also possible to easily see what the preset patches are made up from and begin to modify them more readily.

If the Gaia was a single or even dual oscillator synth - then tweaking patches on the synth itself might be sufficient (which is still both fun and very tactile to do as with any physical synth) but it isn't - and having three banks of everything means this software is extremely handy to visualize what is going into a given patch. It also allows setting exact numbers in text boxes for each slider / knob / temp setting etc. which is very useful.

Only minor issue is that it routes audio through the Gaia itself. In my studio B setup of which this is part, audio is normally routed out through a different audio I/O interface. As it happens however, it's possible to run the software in parallel with a DAW and control the synth with the sound designer while using the synth from within the DAW. Problem solved!

All in all - a great piece of software and B&H had the best price online for it! (Still wish Roland had included it for free with the synth, but - eh well.)

      Recommended!

Comments about Roland SD-SH01 GAIA Synthesizer Sound Designer Software:

It's amazingly good software from a mainly-hardware kinda company. Just a mystery to me they don't put at least a "lite" version in the box with the Gaia SH-01.

Comments about Roland SD-SH01 GAIA Synthesizer Sound Designer Software:

While there is a open source sound editor for the SH-01, I figured I'd go with the official version.

The Roland software is nice software, with sophisticated graphics that mirror the hardware. It's nice to be able to see all three oscillators laid out in one view.

Two downsides: 1) The Roland SD software doesn't allow you to edit arpeggios, which the open source application does. 2) The Roland software is a bit pricey.

Even so, I'd rather work with the Roland software for the most part, and use the open source application only for editing arpeggios. Considering the open source program is free, it's a pretty good compromise.

Comments about Roland SD-SH01 GAIA Synthesizer Sound Designer Software:

The Gaia sound designer software is a must have for anyone using this nifty little synth. It uniquely opens up the world of synthesis to everyone - regardless of their level of expertise - and unveils the secrets hidden within this audio gem while also helping to unleash its awesome power. Anyone will benefit from this software package as it lays out the universal building blocks of today's modern sound synthesis process in a thoroughly comprehensive, easy-to-understand format while guiding the user through synthesized sound creation from beginning to end. The lessons learned through this software can be applied to any other synthesizer, whether it is a virtual software synth or another hardware model, rack module or keyboard style.
Beginning with oscillator selection through filter usage, amplification and finally effects modifications, this software presents sound generation in a highly enjoyable and educational manner. Being able to see the results of your work on your computer screen -in realtime - via the colorful and animated oscilloscope program that is included in the software transforms common, everyday sonic ideas and concepts that are usually unseen into completely tangible commodities. This allows any user, from synth wizard to first-time tweaker, to delve into the synthesis process in a very unique, hands-on way. This software package is so helpful and well put together that the only downside to it is the lingering question of "Why didn't someone think of this years ago!"
