Whether you're a street photographer - sniping for your bread and butter - or any shooter desiring a less expensive backup - or you have a serious hankering to shoot video and stills, the Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only) (Body) is sure to entice, and satiate, not to mention satisfy. Yes, that's correct friends, the E-5 features 1280 x 720p high def video capture, in addition to its 12.3MP still image capabilities. And let's just cut the rest of the suspense right here and now - YES! The E-5 also features a 3" dual axis swivel HyperCrystal LCD. Phew! (You were worried, weren't you? Don't lie to me - I can tell)

So, what's up with the video you ask? As Olympus puts it, this camera captures 1280 x 720p "head turning" high definition video at 30 frames per second. A standard 3.5mm jack also allows for connection of an external microphone for superior stereo audio recording to go with that stellar video. If you don't feel like connecting a mic, or you simply want to be less obvious, you can also utilize the camera's built-in monaural microphone. Additionally, the E-5 accepts over 20 Four Thirds lenses - from wide angle fisheye to super telephoto - definitely something for those into micro four thirds to ponder.

When it comes to the camera's primary function - capturing 12.3MP digital stills - the E-5 hasn't lost touch with its main purpose. Working together with Olympus' TruePic V+ Image Processor and the high-speed live MOS image sensor the E-5 captures stunning still photos. Even in low light settings the E-5 gets the shot thanks to the camera's 6400 ISO capabilities. Where oh where do you store all these exceptional images (and videos)? Well, my friends the E-5 stores your work to both CompactFlash and SDHC/SDXC memory cards, allowing for hassle-free transfer and storage of your files.

When it comes to other exciting aspects of the E-5 you'll benefit from the camera's 10 in-camera Art Filters for fun and impressive effects, like Pop Art, Soft Focus, and Pin Hole (who doesn't like pin hole photography?). Olympus also wants you to know that the E-5 isn't just easy to get along with - it also happens to be one tough cookie. It's "thixomold magnesium alloy chassis" is splashproof and dustproof. In other words, a few sprinkles or a little bit of dust won't hurt it. So, whether you're a seasoned pro, or aspiring to be one, the E-5 provides numerous attractive features guaranteed to fill a need.

Beautiful Image Quality
The E-5 camera utilizes a unique combination of cutting-edge technologies to deliver the highest image quality in the Olympus family. Together with its 12.3 megapixel High-Speed Live MOS image sensor, the Olympus TruePic V+ Image Processor produces clear and colorful photos using all the pixel information at an individual pixel level to provide the best digital images possible. The increased detail is due to the Fine Detail Processing technology, utilizing a sophisticated algorithm to deliver all the information from each pixel for greater detail than shots taken on other cameras with the same number of pixels. The image processor is noted for accurate natural color, true-to-life flesh tones, brilliant blue skies, and precise tonal expression; it also lowers image noise in photos shot at higher ISO settings (ISO 100 to ISO 6400), enabling great results in low-light situations

To prevent image blur caused by camera shake, the E-5 camera employs in-body Mechanical Image Stabilization to compensate for camera movement up to 5 steps EV and delivers blur-free images taken with any of the ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses available for the camera. Moreover, built-in image stabilization works with not only long focal length lenses, but with wide, ultra-wide and even fisheye lenses, permitting long exposures during low-light and night scene settings with sharp, stabilized results

Head-Turning 720p High Definition Video
Shooting video is as easy as ever with the Olympus E-5 camera. The camera captures all the action in crisp 720p HD video at 30 frames per second. With more than 20 Four Thirds lenses, people can shoot video with a selection of lenses ranging from an extreme wide-angle fisheye lens to a super telephoto lens for a variety of expressive options. Photographers can capture great stereo sound quality by plugging any microphone with a standard 3.5mm jack into the camera's stereo microphone terminal. A built-in microphone also records clear monaural audio
3" Dual Axis Swivel HyperCrystal LCD
Whether composing still images or HD video, photographers will appreciate the E-5 camera's 270° dual axis swivel 3" Live View LCD because it covers all the viewing angles from low to high and side to side, ensuring accurate composition and providing opportunities for creativity. Real-time image monitoring of white balance and exposure enables greater creative control of settings. The LCD displays 920,000 dots in vivid color and includes HyperCrystal technology, which offers many times the contrast of conventional LCD monitors for easier viewing in both preview and playback modes. It also provides a wide viewing angle ensuring that images can be composed from even the most obscure angles
Memory
Accepting both CompactFlash Type I UDMA and SD cards (SDHC/SDXC compatible), the E-5 provides a choice of data storage options for enhanced flexibility, and it is possible to transfer image files from one card to the other right inside the camera

Class 6 or higher SD cards are recommended for optimal movie shooting

Durability and Reliability
The E-5 camera's sealed lightweight "thixomold" magnesium alloy chassis is completely splashproof and dustproof for optimal performance with pro lenses on expeditions to the most extreme environments on the planet. A durable shutter mechanism with the lifespan of 150,000 exposures meets the demands of serious photographers. The E-5 camera's large optical viewfinder provides a 100 percent accurate view to ensure photographers do not miss a shot

The E-5 camera also features an award-winning built-in Dust Reduction System that eliminates spots from photos with the exclusive Supersonic Wave Filter. The system won the prestigious Asahi Shimbun Invention Prize in the 2010 Japan National Invention Awards. The patented ultrasonic technology physically vibrates to remove dust and other particles from the front of the image sensor, and captures the debris on a special adhesive membrane every time you turn on the camera. It can even remove dust attached by intermolecular force that cannot be removed by physical vibration or by discharging static electricity. These spot-free photos liberate users from hours spent retouching photographs at the computer or sending their cameras back to the manufacturer to remove dust trapped inside

Unlimited Creativity
Ten in-camera Art Filters, including Dramatic Tone, round out this DSLR's impressive feature set. For the first time, photographers can use Art Filters in all shooting modes, program auto, shutter priority, aperture priority and manual modes and movies with expanded control. Both still and movie capable, the E-5 camera offers HD video in an E-System DSLR for the first time
Great Performance
Intuitive controls and fast performance are essential for capturing the moment without missing a shot. Besides its direct access buttons for quick access to camera menus, the E-5 camera has a Twin cross type (fully biaxial) 11-point AF sensor, based on proprietary Olympus micro-sensing technologies that achieve equally effective performance on both the vertical and horizontal axis

With most biaxial sensors, performance on the vertical and horizontal axes is not equal, and there is often a perceived difference in response time when using different lenses. However, unlike systems that respond at nominally lower f-stop values simply by boosting sensitivity, the E-5 camera's AF sensor features a houndstooth pattern phase detection sensor layout that uses micro-lamination technologies to achieve superior real-world performance. The 11 AF target points on the E-5 can be selected to work individually or dynamically in combination with adjacent target points

The E-5 camera also features five frames-per-second continuous shooting and a 1/8000 second top shutter speed required for shooting situations when you are capturing fast-moving subjects
Wireless Flash Control
The E-5 camera is compatible with a range of optional external flashes, including the Olympus FL-36R and FL-50R. The E-5 camera can control both of these flashes wirelessly so you can dynamically control lighting as your photography skills grow. The E-5 camera features a commander function incorporated in its built-in flash, making wireless multi-flash photography possible without using an outside commander. The E-5 camera can control up to three wireless flash groups independently, and control of multiple flashes is possible even in an environment in which both the FL-50R and FL-36R are used simultaneously. In addition, the E-5 camera's Super Control Panel display makes it possible to enter and check all of the selected items on the LCD. This ensures excellent operability and mobility

I am very new to Olympus, having moved from Nikon D700 (great system, but wanted something new).

I rented an E-30 for 4 days then put in my order for E-5 and managed to get it early :)

I use the camera with 50-200 SWD and 14-54 II and the FL-50 flash.

IQ - Camera is very sharp, I get great shots out of my lenses just as I was getting with the E-30. Both my 14-54II and 50-200 perform excellently.

Autofocus - AF-C performance on the 50-200 is better than the E-30 for sure - With the E-30 AF-C seemed a bit hesitant at times, on the E-5 it's mostly on-point (rarely it will "lock up" and not attempt to AF-C to infinity, but these are difficult shots, and once I MF the lens back into range it snaps back into action). AF-C with the 14-54 II is pointless- still too slow to track anything. AF-S with the 14-54 II seems to be a bit more sure than the E-30, which would stair-step its focus more than the E-5 does.

The high-res screen is great, the art filters are fun to play with, especially since you can see their effects on the live-view, which is very cool.

Controls seem about right, though I don't like how far to the left the AEL/AFL button is located.

The battery still doesn't have a % usage or "shot counter", this system is so archaic compared to Nikon/Sony/Canon (I've owned/shot them all).

Noise, in VERY LIMITED testing that I've done, is about comparable to my Nikon D90 - which is pretty good I guess, but nothing earth-shattering. Don't expect to get amazing performance, but in decent lighting, ISO 1600 is just fine to use (about what D90 does). Note that ISO 3200 is labeled "extended" on the camera's LCD when you change to this ISO. I avoid ISO 3200 / 6400 unless I seriously need the shot.

Moire - So far I haven't experienced any, and I've shot photos that would have induced it otherwise. Note that I'm shooting RAW using Olympus Viewer 2.1, as Lightroom 3 doesn't support the E-5 yet.

Live View - Still does mirror flop, won't take the photo without dropping the mirror (boo!).

Video - Decent I guess, I really rarely use it - but I've enjoyed the clips I've done so far.

Overall - A good camera. I think overpriced for what it is, especially compared to other, competitive models from other manufacturers, but I wanted it early so I paid the price :)
    Still, it's the only swivel-LCD, weather-sealed camera I know of :)

Comments about Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I have a slightly over-developed loyalty to Olympus, from my early days with the OM1, through the various OM numbers, and now the E5 to add to my E1 and E3.

I am mostly a bird photographer so I feel like I have lucked out with the Olympus 4/3 system which gives me double the reach for a fairly compact lens and camera arrangement.

There was nothing wrong with the E3, but if anything, the picture quality (not just pixels) is even better with he E5. I doubt I will use the video function, and shoot mostly through the viewfinder, so do not use the screen very much, but the larger size helps in reviewing 'in the field'.

All-in-all, until there is an E7 or whatever, this is state-of-the-art, and although they are hard to convert, my Nikon and Canon friends cannot help but admire my set up.

Comments about Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I have had the E-5 for quite a while now and have had 4 other E series (E300,E500,E510,E-3)in the past. All except the E300 are still in use by myself or someone I know and all are in perfect condition, each of the older cameras have in excess of 50,000 photos on each one and still going strong.
The E-5 does a great job and keeps the noise pretty well under control, even at ISO 6400 (situation dependant) with the right lenses. I have the F2 14-35 and 35-100, 50-200, 14-54, ect.... The lenses make a huge difference on the photos and Zuiko Pro Series are the BEST.
I have taken photos at 10 pm under stadium lighting whith race cars going past at 60-80 mph (small oval track) with NO Flash. Then I use DXO or Photoshop to clean up the minor noise and have photos far better than the track photographers using flash with their Cannon's and Nikon's (I have seen there photos).
I have used my camera's (E-3 & E-5) in rain, under water falls and in hail storms (using only the water resistant Pro Lenses and Fl-50 flash attached), I go on 5-10 hour hikes in the mountains with it and it takes whatever happens without any signs of wear.

Comments about Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

First time out with the new E-5 was for a school musical and the ISO resolution at 2500 is amazing! Menus are easy to navigate and the function buttons and wheels make changing settings on the fly easy and almost effortless.

I have not used the video capabilities. My ONLY annoyance is the battery level indicator. (I know - picky!) It only stays visible on the top screen, and is tucked into the bottom right corner and is difficult to see. I wish it would stay visible on the rear LCD screen.

Comments about Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I've only had this camera for a couple of weeks but have used it enough to know that I love it. I like all the direct buttons for things like white balance, exposure mode etc. You can do all these things from the menu but it's nice to be able to use the short cuts. As far as I'm concerned, it lives up very well to all the claims that Olympus has made about it and the improvements over previous models are too numerous to list.

Comments about Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I purchased the Olympus e5 as an upgrade to my Olympus e510. In every way this camera out performs every camera I own. The picture quality is exceptional. It does well in low light conditions where the e510 struggled. Its very low noise is a major improvement over previous models. I photograph fast paced sports dog events and needed a camera that handle the sometimes extreme conditions. The Olympus e5 is the perfect choice.

Comments about Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Excellent 4/3 camera much better noise control over previous models. Excetionally sharp images with very fast accurate autofocusing. I have other Olympus E series cameras and this is much better than the E-3 and E-30 both of which I still use and liked very much. I thought I would not be interested in the art filters but I have taken full advantage of the "Dramatic Filter". Now it is a must have.

Comments about Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Well, well, well... I love cameras, most of them! My last true workhorse was a Sony A700, and a Pentax K20 before it. So for one reason or another, you may start using an Olympus E-620 like I recently did, or one of those trendier but quite slower Pen and think: "Wow, these are very competent, well-made products for their respective price!?". I thought so too, even compared to much pricer DSLRs; that's until I tried (and unavoidably fell in love with) their great leader, by far the sexiest of all digital Superstars: the Olympus E-5!

Gorgeous colors, brisk AF as well as shutter responses, large and bright *traditional* pentaprism viewfinder, astonishing robustness, fluid handling, clear LCDs, easy menu operation, better-than-D7000/60D performance up until ISO 1600 (far enough in any case), a very l-o-n-g battery life, and last but not least a privileged access to all of the impressive Zuiko 4/3 beauties, be it the ultra-fast SWD lenses or the Imager-AF, contrast-based lenses!!!

So glad I have at last found a real diamond in the rough...

Comments about Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I upgraded from the E3 and I couldn't be happier. Photos are noticably crisper and clearer. It seems everything from the E3 is compatable, which is nice. Batteries, battery charger, Power Battery Holder (HLD-4) are all compatable. A few buttons have been moved to make room for the excellent LCD monitor, but navigating around the controls is quite simple. I don't take alot of video. The only thing I can say about it is I wish there was a way to shoot video throught the view finder. You have to use the monitor and shoot video with live view. I've been an amature photographer for quite a few years and using the monitor to frame a scene is really awkward for me. Other than that, I can't find anything I don't like about the camera. They also got rid if the xD card slot and replaced it with a SD slot, which was good to see! If you're looking for a really good DSLR, I HIGHLY recommend this camera.

Comments about Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Through disappointments in my Canon 40D and lens incompatibilities even with supposed Canon fixes, I stumbled upon the 4/3rds system with my Leica Digilux 3 that I absolutely love for nature and wildlife shooting. However it does have some limitations. It is too slow for low light and fast sports indoors and is not weatherproof. That is where the E-5 comes into play. Now I have a wonderful, rugged, easy to use, multifunctional camera body that does all of this plus has interchangeable lenses with my Leica 4/3rds system. Yes, it does have some noise at high ISO but I shoot raw and adjust customized noise reduction in photoshop. It's also nice to have a manufacturers top line camera without spending a fortune, the ability to buy 3 levels of quality glass without paying for image stabilization for every lens (built in body stabilization) and some splash proof lenses to boot. Olympus, please keep 4/3rds alive as it does what it was designed to do and better than the competition!

Comments about Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I started a photography business 8 years ago and started with a Nikon, but quickly switched to Olympus. I have owned multiple models, but the E-5 is the best so far. Color, tone, and photo quality is great! The only pit-fall have found so far is the LCD screen dims too quickly and it is not consistant as to how long it stays bright; other than that, it is awesome!

Comments about Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I've ben really impressed with the image quality of the camera since I purchased it. Focus is fast with the 12-60 & 50-200. Even the 50mm seems faster. OVF is much brighter and larger than previous 4/3 cameras. I normally don't shoot much above iso 800 or so, and haven't noticed any noise in some good sized prints I've made. Maybe at 100% on screen at close range some grain its visible, but I didn't see it in any real world situations...

Have used it out I'm the rain with no issues, and love using the articulating monitor to get some really unique framing/views, resulting in shots I wouldn't have gotten with a fixed screen.

I admit it. I'm totally biased.

Comments about Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I have been using the Olympus E system since before the E1 professional camera was released. I am totally biased. AS a camera I find it's ease of use compelling, the lack of icons refreshing, two dial control is lovely and menus easy to navigate. The shortcuts are well signposted, on this camera.
I use this camera both professionally as a photographer and as a teaching aid as a college lecturer.
Negative things.... I'll have to come back to you on that one, but hey I admit I'm biased

Excellent build quality. Very quiet in use. Noise at high ISO is easily fixed. Lenses are the best in the industry.
