The SB-700 Speedlight Shoe Mount Flash from Nikon is an on-camera flash, designed for use with Nikon DSLR cameras that use the i-TTL metering system. It is compatible with DX and FX sensors, and its power zoom head covers a 24-120mm range when used with an FX camera.
You'll be able to use the strobe directly on your camera via the hot shoe, or wirelessly as a Commander or Remote. Using the flash as a Commander allows you it to take control over other Nikon Speedlights, expanding your creative lighting options. As a Remote, it can be controlled by another Speedlight, or your camera's built-in flash. Its Quick Wireless Mode, with A:B light ratios, allows you to quickly adjust settings on multiple flash units -- giving you the ability to control two remote units in i-TTL mode.
It features a dot-matrix LCD control panel with an intuitive layout for easy operation. It derives power from AA batteries -- supporting rechargeable NiMH, disposable Alkaline, and disposable Lithium cells. Recycle time is a scant 2.5 seconds when using NiMH, 3 seconds when using Alkaline.
The SB-700's Thermal Cut-Out detection prevents the flash from overheating. It increases the recycling time if the temperature of the flash head crosses a certain threshold, preventing the unit from becoming damaged.
The strobe includes hard plastic-type color filters for fluorescent and incandescent color temperature balancing. When you use these supplied filters, the flash is able to recognize which filter is installed, adjusting the white balance automatically on compatible Nikon DSLR cameras. It also features an AF-assist illuminator lamp, which helps to speed up the autofocus of your camera in low-light situations.
The SB-700 supports three illumination patterns -- standard, center-weighted, and even -- for use in different shooting situations. Standard mode provides conventional flash coverage. Even mode covers the subject with even light across the entire frame, perfect for group photos where even illumination is desired. Center-weighted mode directs the light to the center of the frame, creating a vignette around your subject that is suitable for portraiture.

I've long wanted a reliable flash unit and had to evaluate every item out there vis reliability and cost and I find the SB-700 meeting my requirements. We're both retired with my wife and as we travel and travel, and keeps shooting our grand kids, we keep on burning our trails with my Nikon d7000, 3 lenses and now this flash unit. It's awfully versatile and spectacular to say the least- fast re-charging, wide, powerful lighting area, lightweight and responsive. I definitely will keep this and recommend to friends!

As a previous owner of the SB 600 I cannot agree that this flash is much superior. It is useless with older film cameras. The SB 600 was fully compatible with older equipment and a bit more powerfull also. With digital cameras this flash is limited to spot metering in the iTTL mode while the SB 600 could be used in matrix and center weighted metering modes. Nikon charges much more for this flash yet offers us fewer metering options. Yes it can be used as a commander if multi flash setups is your thing and comes with useful accessories. although the flash shoe has a plastic tripod connection.
Build quality is OK, nothing to brag about though. The rotating flash head is a bit wobblier than on the SB 600. The matrix LCD panel is not as easy to see either.
Overall the flash does what is expected but backward compatability is pretty much abandoned. For the $100 premium Nikon is asking for this unit over the SB 600 I feel they could have offered more.

Comments about Nikon SB-700 Speedlight Shoe Mount Flash:
Great flash for the price. I use it as an off camera flash while traveling or on location. Must admit it's very technical and half of the manual I don't understand...BUT it's great in manual mode and with a NIkon D600 it has built in flash/slave command mode.

I use this speedlight with my Nikon D5100 camera for personal parties with great results. I have nothing but all good things to say about this flash. I find it easy to use with fast recycling time and no trouble with consistent output. I also like it's ability to be used as a Master or remote flash when needed. Decent price for lot more features.

I've shot with SB-600s and SB-800s and even currently have a dinky SB-400. I can say honestly, I like this SB-700 the best. Its not rocket science to set it up and it has logical controls. Good flash range and has a nice light pattern.

Comments about Nikon SB-700 Speedlight Shoe Mount Flash:
compared to my SB-800, user interface is much more intuitive; I use flash only intermittently and as such find the SB-700 analog switches faster than the SB-800 digital menu; 4 stars since too early to comment on durability but has replaced the SB-800 as my primary flash

Comments about Nikon SB-700 Speedlight Shoe Mount Flash:
I started with an SB-400, but then found that the functionality improvement in the 700 (distance, time between flashes, ability to act as a commander, ability to work as a remote etc.) was way more than the price difference. If you are looking for a single flash unit, and you want to stick to the Nikon stable, this is the best value for money in my opinion.

Comments about Nikon SB-700 Speedlight Shoe Mount Flash:
I'm just a plain Jane photo hobbiest. I wasn't looking for this fancy of a speedlight, but Dave at B & H answered my many questions and help me make a very good choice. Since I have only experienced limited use, it seems to function well. Naturally I have a lot learning and experimenting to do, but I wanted to stay with Nikon to maintain total compatibility with my Nikon D70. Looks like the SB700 and the D70 will become good friends.

I've used this flash in all sorts of situations and am totally impressed with the outcome. Rapid firing, lots of ways to customize the settings and even use it in remote form make it the most versatile flash I've ever owned. Comes with a variety of lenses to soften the light or give the shot a slightly warm or colder look. Love it.

Comments about Nikon SB-700 Speedlight Shoe Mount Flash:
I use this product mostly for indoor photography, weddings and portraiture, and I have to say the results are very pleasing. For a moment I thought about purchasing the SB-910 but found in this model enough power to get good results. It isn't really heavy to carry around for a day, and it fits quite well in my bag. You won't regret about buying this flash.

After years without an external flash, the SB-700 Speedlight is a great addition. It is well balanced for hand held shooting and is very easy to operate.
I have yet to find a use that I was not happy with. Cannot wait to use it in REMOTE mode!!

I bought this to supplement my other two older SB-800 flash units. The menus are easy to navigate. The overall size is nice compared to the 910 model. There is no fifth battery compartment but that was not an issue for me. Overall a great lightweight flash that is easy to use.

Comments about Nikon SB-700 Speedlight Shoe Mount Flash:
I am amazed at how nice this flash is. I primarily use a flash for indoor flower set ups. I moved up from the SB-400 and I wasn't sure how many of the SB-700 features I would use, but I find a new feature and a new use for this flash everytime I use it. It really does a nice job with all kinds of lighting sets. Glad I bought it.
