With a rated guide number of 92' at ISO 100 and 35mm, the SB-700 AF Speedlight from Nikon is a moderately compact flash unit packed with features for high-performance on-camera lighting capabilities. The flash is compatible with the i-TTL system for automatic metering with both FX- and DX-format cameras and is optimized for use with Nikon's Creative Lighting System for complete control over your lighting setup. Additionally, the auto zoom head has a coverage range of 24-120mm with FX-format cameras which can be extended down to 12mm with the use of the built-in wide-angle diffusion panel.

Complete bounce and swivel functionality is available for working in a variety of shooting situations. This allows users to tilt down to -7° and up to 90° as well as rotate left or right 180° for complete 360° coverage. Also, the SB-700 has three different illumination patterns, standard, even, and center-weighted, which help shape the light output for your specific needs. For wireless master TTL functionality, the speedlight utilizes a Commander Mode. In this mode users can access Advanced Wireless Lighting settings for controlling multiple off-camera flashes that can be set up in 2 groups (A, B) and one of 4 channels. The SB-700 also has a quick wireless control A:B ratio setting for quickly setting up and controlling multiple remote flashes.

Many other abilities are packed into this unit, including a stroboscopic repeating flash mode that can be set from 1-100 Hz. The SB-700 also has slow, Auto FP high-speed, first, and second curtain sync modes for achieving the desired creative look in your image. There are even red-eye reduction and red-eye reduction slow sync settings available. The flash itself is mounted to the camera or stand via a locking hot shoe and is powered by 4 AA batteries. And, depending on the type of battery used and the power setting, users can expect a recycle time of 2.5-3.5 seconds.

Included with the SB-700 AF Speedlight are a variety of useful tools and accessories. First, built into the flash alongside the wide-angle diffusion panel is a white slide-out bounce card for bouncing some light directly to the subject and creating catch lights. Also, there is a diffusion dome for softening the output of the flash and fluorescent and incandescent color correction filters for balancing the flash to ambient light. All of this, along with a stand, is packaged in the SS-700 Soft Case, designed specifically for the flash and accessories.

I chose to go the SB-700 route (as opposed to it's more expensive big brother the SB-910) for one primary reason, it's a better value for me in my particular circumstance. As a working photographer I've been hauling around studio lights for 20+ years but have lately been turned on to creating a more compact kit that mantains quality and versatility and perhaps even gives an advantage or two (for instance it's a whole lot easier to get these speedlights into tiny places than full size studio monolights)My solution has been to create a "kit inside a kit" I actually have a relatively small pelican case that fits inside a larger pelican case that holds studio lights. When I only need the speedlights I just grab the smaller case and a bag of stands/modifiers.So why the SB-700? Like I said, bang for the buck. The GN of 92 (ISO 100/ft) is about 2/3 of a stop lower than that of the SB-910 but I can buy 3 of them for less than the cost of 2 of the 910's. It's a good choice for me. If I need more power, will be shooting for an extended period of time, will be shooting a large quantity of frames, or want more versatility in my modifiers then I can go the monolight route anyway (to take advantage of fan-cooling, power, etc)Careful selection of modifiers will really help turn these speedlights into an exceptionally portable/fast studio facsimile with but a few limitations. As for the Nikon CLS system. Well I am pretty old school and probably haven't taken full advantage of it just yet, preffering to shoot in manual and get incident readings when possible, but in the few times I've played with it I've been pleasantly surprised at the results.I do however rely on pocket wizards (Flex TT5 and Mini TT1) for remote triggering as I find it the most dependable solution on the planet. I tend to keep things as simple as possible so I don't generally use a lot of lights but the fact that my monolights and my SB's are both triggered by my pocket wizards allows me to use both at the same time. This means that I basically have expanded my studio kit at a fraction of the cost. In order to make up for slight difference in color temp between mono's and sB's I light the most significant areas of the image with the same system relegating the other to secondary positions. By doing this the need to actually balance the different sources with gels is significantly reduced.Overall the accuracy and consistency of the Nikon SB-700 makes it a very valuable tool for me.

As a previous owner of the SB 600 I cannot agree that this flash is much superior. It is useless with older film cameras. The SB 600 was fully compatible with older equipment and a bit more powerfull also. With digital cameras this flash is limited to spot metering in the iTTL mode while the SB 600 could be used in matrix and center weighted metering modes. Nikon charges much more for this flash yet offers us fewer metering options. Yes it can be used as a commander if multi flash setups is your thing and comes with useful accessories. although the flash shoe has a plastic tripod connection.

Build quality is OK, nothing to brag about though. The rotating flash head is a bit wobblier than on the SB 600. The matrix LCD panel is not as easy to see either.

Overall the flash does what is expected but backward compatability is pretty much abandoned. For the $100 premium Nikon is asking for this unit over the SB 600 I feel they could have offered more.

Comments about Nikon SB-700 AF Speedlight:

It's important to me that my speedlight is light and reliable since I mostly use flash for wedding reception dance photos. The SB-910 seemed too heavy for me and I don't really need all that firepower when I can crank up the ISO and modify in post. This flash was right up my alley. The only thing it lacks is a sync port.

I wanted something lighter than the SB-910 and the SB-700 fits the bill. When I received it, I set it remotely and used the commander and flash on the D810 body to trigger it. Every exposure was right on. No guessing, no fiddling.

I've been a Canon user ever since the EOS1 came out and only recently switched to Nikon Digital. I used this SB700 for practically the first time at my daughter's wedding and got excellent results. I use flash mostly for family photos - I prefer available light whenever posibble - and am very happy with it.

Comments about Nikon SB-700 AF Speedlight:

I have been using an older Canon flash for years. I recently switched to Nikon and needed to buy a flash capable of being a commander for remote flashes as my D5300 does not have this ability. The SB-700 is amazing and so easy to use. I cannot believe the control I have and how simple it was to set up and start using right out of the box.

Bought this for my Df and I am happy so far. Be ready to read the manual, there are so many options to use. Experimented with master/slave mode and was impressed by the results. The unit is a bit on the heavy side, but not so much that it would be a hindrance. Nice - the out of the box accessories, filters, stand, diffuser and reflector card on the unit. I did not experience the cycle times issues mentioned in some of the reviews, but I also did not stress the SB 700 in that respect.

I use this flash with my D750 at outdoor horseshows at night. I've gotta be on the rail, but the flash gets the job done at the distances I'm shooting at.
You can also manipulate the flash head easily to reflect the light off of walls and ceilings indoors.
It's also great with other Speedlights using the remote settings to acquire multiple lighting angles.
Overall, very easy to use and professional quality.

I'm not new at using on camera flash, but I use it mstly for fill or when my subject is backlit. Right now I shoot with a D90 and the ttl is a really good tool to have. The flash works every time and I've never missed a shot because of very quick recycle time. I give this unit a high 5!

Only one photoshoot thus far with this speedlight. Much improved images when compared to the on-camera flash.

I had many flashes in the past, this is my first Nikon flash and I am very impressed. I have been using it for portraits and am impressed by the small amount of flash that gets generated, with skin colors spot on. Also, it reduces red eye, w the photographs have beautiful eyes. Before purchasing, I read some review about the battery door having problems. It has a push button that needs to be engaged before opening and that is not a problem.

My old SB-600 finally died and I went for the SB-700. The 700 has a lot more built in features that I sm still experimenting with. It is a worth replacement.
