The AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G Lens from Nikon is a fast lens with a classic wide-angle focal length. Its f/1.4 maximum aperture allows for effective low-light shooting, even handheld. It's also able to achieve a very narrow depth of field when shooting at f/1.4, creating a dramatic separation between your subject and background.

The lens features a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus. Its Rear Focusing (RF) system ensures that the front element won't rotate during focus, making it possible to use a circular polarizing filter with the lens. Two focus modes are available -- M/A and M. M/A is the autofocus mode yet allows manual focus override for fine-tuned precision and M is the full-time manual focus mode.

The optical design of the lens features 10 elements in 7 groups, with a single aspherical element that reduces coma and other types of aberrations -- even when shooting wide open. It also boasts Nikon's exclusive Nano-Crystal Coat, which minimizes flare -- even in backlit situations. A nine blade circular aperture delivers a pleasing out of focus background.

This is a "G" series lens, which means that there is no physical aperture ring -- the aperture must be controlled by the camera. It can be used on Nikon FX and DX format DSLRs. When used on a DX camera, the lens provides the equivalent field of view of a 52.5mm lens in the 35mm format.

Fast Wide-Angle Lens
A wide-angle prime lens with a fast f/1.4 maximum aperture, it is suitable for almost all photographic applications, including but not limited to landscapes, night photography, interiors, weddings, photojournalism, and astrophotography.
Optimized for Edge to Edge Sharpness on Both FX and DX-Format DSLRs
When used on a DX-format DSLR, the angle of view is 44°, equivalent to a focal length of 52.5mm in the FX/35mm format.
Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM)
Enables fast, accurate and quiet autofocus.
Rear Focus (RF)
Provides smooth and fast autofocus while eliminating front barrel rotation and lens extension when focusing.
Aspherical Lens Element
One aspherical lens element reduces coma and other types of aberrations, even when shooting at the widest available aperture.
Nano Crystal Coat
Nano Crystal lens coating reduces ghosting and interior flare across a wide range of wavelengths for even greater image clarity.
Rounded 9-Blade Circular Diaphragm
Renders a more natural, pleasing appearance to out-of-focus image elements.
M/A Focus Mode Switch
Enables quick changes between manual and autofocus operation and seamless override of the AF system for precise manual focus when needed.

I struggled between two lenses, the 24mm 1.4G or the 35mm 1.4G; decided that the 35mm would be best all around, not too wide or long. This lens has been truly amazing!

The Good, the bad, and the ugly...

First the Good: The build quality is wonderful. The weight and balance seems just right on my camera body (D4). The focal length is just right on a FX format, just like the old 35mm days. The lens handles well without getting too much in the way. The 1.4 f-stop kills low light issues but one would expect that! The colors and bokeh that this lens does in low light makes it a stand out!

The Bad: Small issue is the lens cap size, 67mm; would have preferred that Nikon designed it with the standard 77mm cap.

The Ugly: Price point however one would expect that a quality low light prime would come with a high price tag.

At the end of the day, the 35mm 1.4G is worth the investment since we all know that we only have that "one chance" to capture that image. Heck, this lens may actually make me lose some weight! It replaced my slightly heavier 24-70mm 2.8 plus I will need to move around more to frame shots, hence the weight loss! LOL!

If you are even thinking about this lens, no need to think any further! Just put it into your B&H shopping cart and check out! Happy Shooting!!!

    It is sharp @ f/1,4
    But...
Slow and noisy AF with huge barrel distortion is huge disappointment!
I am not pixel counter, I will rather photograph my kid and make nice memories instead of waste my precious time by counting technical flaws of the lens.
Hey, I paid almost 2000 euros for the new lens, and for that I expect some ED element in glass, less or NO barrel distortion and Quicker AF response of corse.

Will I sell it? NO! But I would not by it again.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G Lens:

A tad soft at f1.4, but great sharpness from f1.8 and higher. Chromatic aberration was strong with D810 at f1.4, dropped off at f1.6, and was not an issue at f1.8 any longer. On D700 chromatic aberration was not an issue at all at f1.4.
Great color reproduction and bokeh! No issues with focus shift. This lens is a worthy companion for a D810. The D810 shows the lens' limits at f1.4, but also brings out the best of this lens from f1.8 and upwards. Good all around, walk around lens, IMO. Great color reproduction and bokeh!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G Lens:

I have recently began shooting with prime lenses after using zooms for years. The 35mm is a nice standard length for a full frame camera. I am sure this lens will be on my camera most of the time. The focus is fast and accurate and I love the bokah. The images are as sharp as or sharper than my 24-70 f2.8. It's been interesting to photograph from the same site using both lenses with the zoom set to 35mm. Even going from 2.8 to 2 makes a tremendous difference in the bokah and the subjects really stand out from the background. I'm still getting a feel for just how narrow the depth of field is at 1.4, but sometimes won't have as much of the subject in focus as I had planned. That is my mistake and it is part of the learning curve for a fast lens. The trade off of having your subjects pop and the artistic control is well worth the learning. Image quality is excellent. Only complaint would be the 67mm filter size. I bought a 67mm polarizer and a 67-77mm step up ring.

Awesome lens! Used it on Nov 1st wedding assignment. Shot mostly wide open on D810... First dance; processional; recessional; ceremony; bride getting ready - all very low light conditions and this lens performed admirably. A couple of times it had some trouble focusing... but it was so low-light, I think most lenses would have had difficulty. Landscape images are incredible... colors, saturation; focus; overall image quality is terrific.Would definitely recommend this lens.

The 35 mm f/1.4 on a Nikon Df is the perfect combination for Street photography. There is no light situation a f1.4 and high ISO of Nikon Df cannot handle. The lens is a little bulky, but one gets the result.

First of all, this is a great lens. Shooting on my D600 I consistently get excellent photos with great color. contrast and quality. Being honest, I could probably get more for less money with the Sigma, but I am a Nikon fan, so I didn't.Cons: Definitely soft at 1.4 and much pricier than some other lenses. Otherwise, no complaints.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G Lens:

I find the 35mm a "just right" focal length for 35mm full sensor cameras, in my case the D800E. This lens performs superlatively, the files it produces are extremely detailed, colorful, contrast rich, exhibiting excellent edge to edge sharpness, clarity, and bokeh wide open. The files are deep and rich and just beautiful to look at. It's superior to my Nikkor 20-35mm F2.8 D and that's saying a lot as it is, itself, a fantastic lens; no stretch to say RAW files have a medium format film look to them right out of camera, with JPEG's also looking terrific. It's not perfect however, chromatic aberration (purple/green fringing) does present itself when shot wide open in backlit situations or for subjects with high contrast features like chrome, F1.4 is a bit soft (mostly gone by F1.8 and just improving from there up) but this can actually work to your advantage in certain photographic situations, and it does exhibit a bit of distortion and mild vignetting (describing most fast wide angle lens). Focus is quick, though not the quickest, focus accuracy is perfect with little hunting even in low light, build quality is fantastic assuming composite materials don't offend you (there's plenty of precision machined, expensive metal below the outside covering). Balance and feel on the camera is perfect and it's spent an inordinate amount of time mounted to my D800e as it truly is an ideal focal length for everyday shooting in all sorts of situations/environments. Price is prohibitive but if you what/need a fast 35mm and can justify the price, neither you nor your clients will be disappointed. There are certainly less expensive options available in this focal length but in all my many years of shooting with Nikon products I've never had to return a Nikkor lens nor has one ever let me down. Thus I stay loyal to Nikkor lens even at the high prices they command. I believe camera bodies to be visitors, while glass is family and purchase accordingly; this lens is as good a place to put your money as any… If you love Nikkors's 85mm F1.4 G (I do) then look at this lens as its 35mm little brother, it's easily as good and certainly worthy of the investment. So stop reading and procrastinating and make the jump, I have and am not the least bit sorry I did!!! As always I highly recommend buying from B&H, my favorite retailers of many, many years.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G Lens:

I made the mistake of listening to some negative or ambivalent online reviews on this one, and so I put off buying one for a long time. I've always been a big fan of the 35mm focal length, and after trying quite a few, I've finally found a winner.Besides the reviews, the other thing that led me to avoid this lens was the size and weight. It's a big, heavy lens. It pairs well with my D800E, but when you travel quite a bit and often spend 12-hour days shooting, the weight is a definite downside. But I'm happy to say that this lens is worth the hassle of carrying around. It is quite sharp wide open, and the corners sharpen up nicely for landscape work at F4-5.6. It has some CA, but nothing extraordinary. My copy focuses perfectly on both of my D800E bodies and it's more than fast enough. Online reviewers tend to get obsessed with lens sharpness. And sharpness is important to me too since I often make large exhibition prints. This lens is very sharp at the focal point for things like reportage and environmental portraits. The sharpness might fall off a bit in the corners wide open, but they're almost always going to be outside of the depth of field anyway. Stopping down to f/4 or f/5.6 produces very sharp corners with great contrast throughout the frame. So if you're reasonable and don't expect tack sharp corners at f/1.4 on a brick wall, this lens is actually quite sharp in practice. But the real strength of this lens is the look and rendering. The 35/1.4G produces beautiful results under a variety of conditions. The color is especially nice and the way it renders warm tones is really special. If you like the 35mm focal length, this lens definitely deserves a look. It's reliable, fast, durable and feels really nice. The lens has a bit more CA than I would like, but it's usually easily fixable and other lenses in this focal length aren't any better. The only real downsides are the cost and weight.

Wow where do I start. Awesome wide open. Best from f/2 on. This lens has very consitent output, and it's really hard to take a bad shot with it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G Lens:

I really do love this lens! I am a commercial photographer and it is my go-to for lifestyle shoots. It is a good sturdy construction that puts up with whatever I put it through! Auto focus is great, manual focus is smooth, super sharp (even decent wide open), bokeh is gorgeous (duh!) all good things!

However a couple things I noticed were... there is a good bit of barrel distortion and vignetting (although easily corrected in post) and also a good bit of chromatic aberration. For a lens of this price I thought those issues would be nonexistent. However, not enough to make me not like the lens, just a few things I noticed.

Overall, great lens would definitely recommend!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G Lens:

This is a no compromise lens. The depth of field is slim and butter smooth. It is one of the sharpest 1.4's out there. The AF is accurate and fast. Highly recommended.

I bought this glass to get into photography. Huh? yeah, go big or go home. I use it for street photography mostly.I love the build quality, how fast it is, and its bokehkicious. I take photos in pitch black conditions because I can. One thing, but only noticeable when image size is large (not something you are likely to see on a image the size of even a 30" monitor) is color fringing. Purple haze.Havng said that, I would buy another one if I didnt have to pay rent this month :)

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G Lens:

So far I have used this lens for flowers and a couple of portrait sessions using a D800. The sharpness is incredible.
I set up a small studio in a back room of my house and found that the Nikon fixed length AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.4G (which is just as good as this lens) was just too long for full body length portraits with the extra 3ft eaten up by the background. I would have been out of the house to get a full body length picture. With this lens and the D800 I was able to get in the full body with plenty of room to crop and be able to make out every poor in the face.
There is more good to say about this lens, but it has been said in other reviews.

If you can afford it, buy it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G Lens:

I bought this lens to use for both photos and video. It was worth every penny! I was thinking about going with the Zeiss 35mm 1.4, but it was just to hard to manual focus for shooting pictures (I have a Zeiss 85mm 1.4 manual and love it). The auto focus feature is what sold me on this when comparing the two.

I have a huge addiction to my Nikon 85mm 1.4. However, I shoot a lot of weddings, and sometimes I am in tight spaces where the 85mm just doesn't work. I ordered this 35mm 1.4 to be able to shoot wider but still get that shallow depth at 1.4. I haven't gotten to use it too much yet, but it is exactly what I wanted so far!
