Not all tablet pens are created equal. The Art Pen from Wacom replicates the feel and experience of a classical felt marker, but with all the advantages for working digitally in graphics applications, such as Adobe Photoshop or Corel Painter. With a unique 360° rotation sensitivity, you can rotate the barrel of the pen and your Wacom tablet will recognize it. With this rotation sensitivity, you can use the included chisel nib tip to create unique paintbrush-like effects in Corel Painter or Adobe Photoshop. The chisel tip also allows you to emulate markers and calligraphic pens.

Beyond barrel sensitivity, the pen features pressure and tilt sensitivities to provide you with even more capabilities. In any of the supported paint or photo programs, these sensitivities come in handy when you need to adjust line weight, brush size, image opacity, or exposure. Moreover, you get a more fluid, natural feel when working. However, if you find that the pressure or tilt sensitivities aren't to your liking, you can easily customize either on your computer.

As a nice added touch, an eraser crowns the top of the pen, so that you can digitally erase your work as you go along. In terms of accessories, you'll find two chisel-tipped nibs, two chisel-tipped felt nibs, three bullet-tipped nibs, three bullet-tipped felt nibs, and a convenient nib extractor for quickly switching out nibs. Also included is a pen stand that can hold the pen, some spare nibs, and the extractor.

With the pen's 360° rotation sensitivity, rotating the barrel of the pen allows you to create unique, paintbrush-like effects in Corel Painter or Adobe Photoshop

Some information in this review is repeated from elsewhere on the internets, but I will cover some new info on this cool product.

      What you get:
-Offical packaging with Intuos4 style black slipcover
      -Art pen
-Pen stand with extra nibs, bullet and chisel
      no spring loaded nib
no nib puller (the standard nib puller works but you risk gouging the nib, if you pull gently you dont damage the nib)

Compared to the standard grip pen:
The nib tip is bigger than the standard grip pen nibs and the shaft is slightly thicker. It comes with a chisel nib, which you would think would slip and rotate during use, but it fits snuggly enough that my hand pressure does not move it.

Also the diameter of the chisel nib is small in the respect that one would only feel the slightest tactile nuance when twisting the pen between the fingers. More on tactile feedback later.

The thick part of the grip is slightly thicker than standard pen, to facilitate twisting.

Other differences include the lack of interchangeable color rings and slightly side button placement, about half a centimeter. I like the button placement since I like to hold the stylus farther away from the nib.

Usability/productivity: I paint in Photoshop CS 5.5 and my main computer is a desktop Windows 7 64bit. There is a bug where the rotation skips when you hold the pen at about 180 degrees, its quite annoying. Luckily, the way I rotate it between my fingers rarely enters the buggy zone. I've also tried this on the new iMacs and a windows 7 32bit laptop without experiencing the bug. Otherwise the rotation response feels good and solid. There is no rotation on the eraser but I never use it, I just switch tools in PS.

As for tactile feedback and usability in photoshop, the normal brush cursor does not rotate with the pen. You dont know what angle stroke you put down unless you keep track where the side switch is on the pen, which takes getting used to.

The Bristle brushes show the rotation until you put the pen to the tablet then the cursor angle freezes until you lift up again. I hear Painter has brush ghosting but I've never used it.

The ways I use the rotation control:
with a flat or less round brush, I can change line thickness by rotating.

I can change the angle on calligraphy type brushes

I can fade between foreground and background color by setting color jitter to rotation. Another quirk with this is the pen graduates in a counterclockwise motion. If you twist in a clockwise motion through the 0 degree position, it will snap to the other color without fading.

So is it more productive? After a week of use, I am still deciding, but making strokes just got way more fun! Also, for the slanted type brushes, its is much less annoying to change angles.

One thing I'd like to request from wacom is the ability to choose where 0 degrees is, so accomodate how different users grip the pen.

I showed my university instructor this pen, who was a digital matte painter for several years, and now he wants to get one!

If you enjoy making expressive lines or brush strokes this pen is for you. If you are hesitating on the price, as I was, consider that the pen is well made and will work on both Intuos 4 and Cintiqs.

My original Wacom grip pen broke, so I figured why not upgrade. However, I found this Art Pen disappointing. I use my Wacom to illustrate comic art and was completely content with the grip pen. The shape, weight and pressure sensitivity was excellent. The Art pen has rotate capability and the Grip does not, but its rotate technology only works with a couple of software packages and even then only with certain brushes. The Art pen is heaver, bulky and the front end is shorter then the Grip pen not allowing me to get the same tilt as I was accustom too with the Grip pen. Also this pen has fewer nib options. All of that and a higher price tag to boot.

The Art Pen by Wacom is a great tool. It is pressure sensitive which allows for the slightest variations in brush strokes. Simple to use and comfortable in hand, it offers several options for tips stored within a compact stand.

The art pen is somewhat of an improvement over the grip an classic pens. You can twist it and the brush that you're painting with will twist, also. This gives you a little bit more control and the ability to create some subtle nuances.

I could do an ad for Wacom. I've been using their tablets for 20 years or so and really hate using a mouse or any other ADB devise.

In addition to it's ease of use and natural feel (a pen is an artist's natural tool, right?), this one works great with my laptop and fit nicely in my backpack. I can take it and what I do anywhere: travel, meetings, even the corner coffee shop.

The moment I got it off the packaging and held it, I was already very pleased with the new weight of the Art Pen. It is slightly heavier than the Grip Pen (intuos5 standard issue) nearer the pen tip and drawing on the tablet is a different feel from before.

However it does not ship with the pen nib remover as advertised.

Overall an excellent pen and highly recommended.

I upgraded to the Intuos Art Pen because it allows the pen to be rotated 360 degrees. Now, I can paint with the brushes pointed in any direction and tilt.

                          I works as advertised.

Comments about Wacom Art Pen w/ Stand and Replacement Nibs:

I have a couple grip pens that I've acquired over the years from owning a few intuos 4's. I bought this after reading the reviews, and I can attest to the fact that it is better than the stock pen. It feels slightly larger, but it definitely not chunky. The nibs are also a little bit fatter which provides a really nice response when working in broader, sweeping strokes. Since receiving the art pen, I've switch mostly to the soft nibs whereas before I was using the hard and spring. Some cons are, as other have said, it looks nearly identical to the stock grip pen. You can tell them apart, but not very easily. There are also not colored rings to identify it. I've been using the colored rings on my other grip pens so that the art pen stand out from the group. This doesn't come with a nib puller. This doesn't seem to be a problem for me, but for the price of this thing, WACOM could have provided a 5 cent piece of metal. This brings me to my second point, it's expensive. This isn't B & H's fault, the pen lists for about the same price everywhere. WACOM tablets are expensive, I don't think its fair to have customers pay so much for accessory pens which essentially 'unlock features' which are intrinsic to intuos 4 and 5s.

The art pen is a great addition to the Wacom Intuos4 tablet. It fits the hand better than the original pen and the nibs are wonderful for Photoshop work.

Comments about Wacom Art Pen w/ Stand and Replacement Nibs:

                                Great art pen.

This pen rotates on the Intuos4 and the Cintiq.

By the way, this pen is working fine on the 24HD. The rotation works well showing you the brush moving onscreen. Finding information on how the pen works with the 24HD was difficult. All the Wacom marketing literature still just shows it as an Intuos pen.

Note, the brush rotation works correctly on the cintiq 24hd but the visual display only adjusts the brush rotational orientation when you are not drawing. At first I thought the pen wasn't rotating but it is. I believe this is a cosmetic driver issue but it in no way impacts what you are drawing. The rotation still works as expected.

My one gripe is that it looks identical to a non-art pen. So if you have them sitting side by side, it's hard to tell them apart. Wacom should have changed the color or something.

The art pen does not come with any identification rings, but even if it did, it would still be hard to tell them apart because the stand covers the ring and is identical as well. I guess I'll have to make a label for the base.

Comments about Wacom Art Pen w/ Stand and Replacement Nibs:
