Comments about Acratech Extended Universal L Bracket:

This product is well designed and superbly executed in durably finished single piece of aluminum with stainless steel hardware and fittings. Once assembled with the quick-release clamp on the L-bracket itself, it is easy to mount and dis-mount a variety of cameras (each of which must have an Arca-Swiss compatible camera plate). I expect that this single-piece "L" design will be more durable over time and more reliable in use than those where the "L" arm is an add-on bolted to the base plate.

Although its initial cost may seem high compared to other L-brackets, since this one can be used with virtually any camera you may acquire, it can save money in the long run by not having to buy an expensive custom-fitted L-bracket for each camera. (This is even more of a factor if you sometimes use the cameras along with their optional vertical battery grip – a custom fitted L-bracket for camera without vertical grip will typically not fit same camera with grip installed. This L-bracket can be used either with or without the vertical grip installed on the camera.)

Most L-brackets connect directly to the camera's tripod socket. This one attaches to an Arca-Swiss compatible camera plate mounted on the camera via a quick release clamp on the L-bracket.

The main advantage of a custom bracket is that, if well designed, it will "fit like a glove" along two edges of the camera body with easy access to compartments and connectors while the L-bracket is on the camera. And, of course, an L-bracket provides a convenient way to mount the camera on a tripod in either portrait or landscape orientation, then quickly switch to the other.

Like the custom-fitted L-brackets, previous "universal" designs that I had seen connected to the camera tripod socket, but often got in the way of compartments and connectors. It was a pain to have to unscrew that kind of L-bracket to have access, for example, to the battery or memory cards. This Acratech design eliminates that issue by being adjustable to allow access, and very easy to remove when needed.

If you leave the L-bracket on the camera all the time, the "L" arm needs to be positioned along the side edge on the opposite side of the camera from the edge that is gripped, to allow the photographer to hold the camera in hand and use the shutter release and other controls comfortably. With this bracket's design with a clamp to secure the camera via an Arca-Swiss plate rather than directly screwed into the tripod socket, it is more likely that the L-bracket will stay on the tripod than on the camera.

Therefore, if the connector clearance is too tight with the L-bracket positioned along the edge (left side looking at back of camera) on the opposite side of the camera from the side that is gripped when the camera is hand-held, the L-bracket can, instead, be oriented to the edge that is gripped when hand-held (right side when looking at back of camera), giving totally unobstructed access to the other (left) side of the camera where the remote control port and audio/video connections are typically located.

Although it is possible that you could confuse which knob to twist to remove the camera from the L-bracket if you have an Acratech ball head that has a quick release clamp with the same style rubber knob, if the knobs are on opposite sides of the camera (front and back) or your ball head's quick release clamp has a lever instead of a knob, or comes from a different vendor, the chances of turning the L-bracket's knob and accidentally releasing the camera at the wrong time are unlikely. (I have a Markins ball head and a Manfrotto geared head modified to accept Arca-Swiss camera plates, and the knobs do not look at all alike.)

Because of the way I use the bracket, I am not sure the additional inch or so of the "portrait" arm of the Extended L-Bracket is absolutely necessary with my Sony A7/A7r cameras, even with the Vertical Grip added. However, I do appreciate the additional positioning flexibility it gives and for only $20 more than their "standard" Universal L-Bracket, it is better to be safe with it in hand now than sorry later. If I were going to be using this with a Nikon D800 with optional battery grip or a Nikon D4, the extra length would be a "no-brainer" to be able to position the camera properly.

Over the years, L-brackets have made a significant difference in time and convenience for me when switching between landscape and portrait orientation on a tripod. But their costs do add up, and the custom L-brackets are not transferable between models. For example, the L-bracket for the D800 will not work well on the D600, and the one for the NEX-7 does not fit on the NEX-6.

When I recently decided to move from primarily using DSLRs to the new Sony A7/A7r cameras with vertical battery grip, given what products are currently available, I faced the prospect of 1) having to remove the vertical battery grip to be able to use a custom-fitted L-bracket, 2) "making do" with kludgy fastened-together pieces with tiny bolts to form the "L" even from very respected brands, or 3) having to shift the camera from sitting above the tripod head to hanging by the side to achieve portrait orientation, thus changing the weight balance, as well as changing the relative alignment of lens to subject.

The Acratech Extended L-Bracket does away with those concerns, being both easy to use to switch between landscape and portrait, and stable with a one piece L-bracket that has a very tight, secure fit with the quick release clamp, and provides added versatility for as many cameras as you choose to fit with Arca-Swiss compatible camera plates.

Comments about Acratech Extended Universal L Bracket:

The L Bracket is terrific. I should not have waited so long to purchase this.

It makes changing the orientation of the camera on the tripod so convient and well balanced.

I also use it to take portait orientation large images, stitching 3 images together for a very large pixel sized image.. .

            Money well spent.

Comments about Acratech Extended Universal L Bracket:

This is a very well made sturdy product. The Arca-Swiss clamp secures your camera nicely, you just have to be carefull to remember to loosen the right clamp when switching from horizontal to verticle. I would recommend this and any Acratech product. The fact that Acratech products are made in the USA is icing on the cake.

Comments about Acratech Extended Universal L Bracket:

Obviously, this is an L bracket. No need to elaborate further its function. I preferred this removable type over dedicated ones. This is well built/designed and the "arca" type clamp is a neat feature.I have multiple DSLR's and can easily switch from one camera to another if the need arises. You need to have a dove tail plate attached on each camera, though. No problem at all in accessing the left side of the camera whenever you want to attach something like a remote shutter release & etc. There's another great use that I found on this puppy. During off days, I usually go out birding and a tripod with gimbal is just too cumbersome. Instead,I use a monopod with tilt head for my heavy telephoto lens. The only problem is, I can't use my (CB)gimbal mount flash bracket.I figured out a solution by mounting this bracket on the tilt head (with "arca" type clamp) and re-orient this bracket's clamp position, pointing front. You can then mount your lens (foot)the usual way and attach the flash bracket on the side. Overall, this is a great bracket and would highly recommend it.

Comments about Acratech Extended Universal L Bracket:

Switch portrait and landscape in a second. Light weight, solid construction and not bulky when even leaving space for access to left side of camera. I never take it off - it gives some protection for the camera and it is easier for me to grab the camera in a hurry.

Comments about Acratech Extended Universal L Bracket:

This L-bracket can be used by multiple cameras, making it unnecessary to have custom brackets for each body. The bracket has an additional mount, which can be moved separately from the bracket, providing additional flexibility. The biggest plus, as with any L-bracket, is the ability to quickly switch the camera 90 degrees without limiting movement of the ballhead. While the bracket is more flexible and being universal, it is more bulky than a custom fitted one. Additionally, the bracket needs to be removed in order to access anything on the left side of the camera.
