This lens also works on a Lumix G2. You will need to download the firmware v1.1 from Panasonic's web site and upgrade your camera.
The lens itself is great for 3D work but with a minimum Fstop of 12, you need lots of light e.g. daylight or powerful flash. If not, you're going to need a tripod.

But I think this is by design so that you don't get the depth of field in order to show the 3D effect. With the lens in place and the new firmware installed, the camera will automatically turn off features that are not available e.g. Movie mode.
The camera will write a JPG(2D) and a MPO file. The MPO file is really just two stereo images stored as left and right views. There are plenty of free software that can read and convert this file type into several different formats that can view the 3D effect on a computer screen without using a 3D ready TV. Google 'Stereo Photo Maker' and get the software you need and also learn on you own.

This 3D Lens is really cool, but the novelty wears off quickly.

The Good: When viewed on a 3D HDTV, the .MPO files are really striking and can impress family and friends. I have some great shots of my daughter playing with bubbles and the bubbles fly out of the screen. I keep a thumb drive with these .MPO files in my TV at all times, so when I get the chance to impress/bore my guests, I can just turn the TV on.

The Bad: Don't think for a second this is a 3D Video lens. The GH2 clearly informs you that the lens won't work for video and the AF100 shoots the side by side image that YouTube can't successfully turn into 3D. In theory, you could shoot with this lens with the AF100, but you would need to do some tricky processing to it and would only end up with half of a 16x9 frame. You can have a movie in 8x9. Cool!-not.

The Ugly: The lens shoots a normal JPEG along with the 3D file so you are able to see what you shot on the camera, but that image is not as clean as a normal JPEG shot with a normal lens.

It is a fun little tool in the arsenal to take advantage of your 3D TV, because lets face it, you need to find SOME way to take advantage of that feature, but this is not a professional lens. It is a toy. Buy it for the family to play with, not the professional world.

Comments about Panasonic 3D LUMIX G 12.5mm/F12 Lens for DMC-GH2:

I have only taken experimental photos. I also got it to work with video. The photos look deep and rich as long as they are well lit - it is a f12 lense.

With my GH2, it automatically creates a 2d 1920X1080 pic. They look nice too.

Video is not supported, but if you block the contacts it will work. Played back on my Panasonic 3d plasma, the movies have decent depth, color, and few artifacts, but they seemed stretched too wide.

Thanks B&H for selling this great lens for less than 1/3 price of the original seen online. I already used the lens and tested the 3D pic on my Panasonic Plasma 3D HDTV, the picture worked great! Will take the lens on my upcoming vacation.

I recommend if you desire 3D photo, buy it from B&H, never saw it listed as LOW than here.

Comments about Panasonic 3D LUMIX G 12.5mm/F12 Lens for DMC-GH2:

The biggest disappointment is that the 2 stereo lenses on the camera are only about an inch apart. This gives a stereo effect that is actually less than the human eyes, and underwhelming except for foreground items. I tried increasing the "depth control" on my stereo viewer but all that does is move your eyes farther apart. When shooting more distant scenes, holding a camera and shooting 2 shots 6" apart gives a much more dramatic 3-D shot than using this lens.

With a DMC-GF2, my son was looking forward to 3D photography, so I was delighted to see your sale and quickly ordered it. He is experimenting with this lens and learning a lot about photography and how 3D imaging works. The results are great. Of course the resolution of the images is a lot lower than the max resolution of the sensor... Knowling this limitation, I would recommend this. Also, there is a trick you can apply if you want to do 3D videos... Just google and find the suggestions in the forums.

Fixed focus, f12, and incredibly narrow inter-ocular distance between the lenses make this nothing more than a toy. It would have been far more useful if the fixed focus would have been set to support macro photography (where the small inter-ocular distance would be useful.)

Bought this on sale on a whim. Mostly to play with it after finding software that allows you to convert to red/blue 3D.
For photos of a close subject with another subject in the background the results are fairly good. (requires some planning)
Might be cool for someone with the proper Panasonic TV.
For most shots there is little noticeable 3D effect.
f12 makes it difficult in low light conditions

Fun to play with but don't think this will end up in the camera bag.

Comments about Panasonic 3D LUMIX G 12.5mm/F12 Lens for DMC-GH2:

I purchased this lens to experiment with 3D Photos and to test 3D video as well.

The lens (when attached to the Panasonic GH2) will automatically lock out the video mode, as it is meant specifically for photos in the camera's preset '3D' mode. A quick workaround to use it for video is to simply put a piece of tape over the sensor on the lens to prevent it from transmitting metadata to the camera. This will prevent it from locking out video mode.

The lens actually splits the frame into two separate areas to achieve the 3D effect. While it does indeed work, the half-sized final image/video due to the lens-splitting really restricts you from producing pleasing results - at least any you'd want to put on a big screen. The necessary drop in resolution to turn this 2D camera into a 3D one is a big drawback.

One also must examine the lens in terms of build quality - it's small, plastic, not too special. Plenty wide at 12.5mm to be sure, but the big glaring drawback is that *f12* aperture. This lens does NOT let in a lot of light. You'll only get visible shots outside on a sunny day. Don't expect to be able to use it indoors or in any low-light situation whatsoever.

Overall, a lens this cheap might be fun to keep in your camera bag to break out for some occasional interesting shots, and as a bit of a photographer's 'conversation starter', but don't buy it thinking you'll be making the next 'Avatar'. The 3D is mediocre at best, and won't be winning awards.

But for such a low price, who can really complain? You get what you pay for.

The lenses are closer together than your eyes, so the 3D effect can be a bit subtle- but for objects within about 1 to 10 meters away, you get a very nice 3D effect. There is free software on the web to seperate the .mpo files into 2 side by side jpegs so you don't need a 3D TV to view the images.

Comments about Panasonic 3D LUMIX G 12.5mm/F12 Lens for DMC-GH2:

Well, the lens itself is well-made, super tiny and super light. It works perfectly with GH2. E-Z to use.

The biggest issue is consumption of content. And then there is the image quality.

The quality is, of course not great because you are using about a quarter of the sensor to capture each of the fields. The resulting image is around 1000 pixels across, not 16mp or whatever your camera is. So there is that.

And the lens is f/12 so you need tons of light or quite a high iso that significantly cuts into the quality of a crop from an m43 sensor.

Then the viewing of the image.. You need a Pansonic 3D TV. I don't have one so I had to use a program to merge the images into an image you can view with Red/Blue glasses. I can see the 3D effect, but color is, of course, not great. And the whole experience is quite underwhelming.

Also, what are you going to do with those images once you have them? Unless you have a 3D TV or a 3D photo frame or find a place that does affordable lenticular prints, not much.

You need to buy an entire Panasonic 3D TV system to see your results coming out of this lens. In other words it is useless, if you just to buy this lens put it on your GH2, shoot and try to see the 3d results.

I hope Panasonic will come up with a better 3D system.

I have tried this lens in mountains, going for a drive on mountain skiing. Portraits, a photo in movement turn out cool. On 3D TV to look interesting! Has upset absence of possibility to remove video! To look with 3D-effect it has turned out only from a SD-card

Comments about Panasonic 3D LUMIX G 12.5mm/F12 Lens for DMC-GH2:
