I have only used the Vivitar Series 1 DF-293 bounce/zoom/swivel TTL/M flash for one shoot--a rehearsal for a truly spectacular Christmas program produced at the church I attend. The unit proved not only to be an excellent value, but performed superbly. I used the manual settings extensively, and was very pleased with the results. (And for those complaining about the recycle time, well, I have ascertained no evidence for this claim.)The LED screen on the rear of the unit is easy to read, the bounce and swivel settings are flawless, and the unit has five power-output settings: 1/1; 1/2; 1/4; 1/8; 1/16. Furthermore, five rear-located buttons allow the user to change settings or turn on screen backlighting for five seconds. The ISO range is 25-800, and the focal-length display changes as the user pulls the head out to one of four different settings: 28mm; 35mm; 50mm; 85mm. (Of course, the user can well employ the flash at longer focal lengths, but the results then would be less-than-ideally predictable.) Pulling and pushing the flash head is a bit noisy and initially somewhat startling, giving the impression that you possibly are stripping something, but the unit soon becomes more flexible with very little use. "Official," marked bounce settings are to 45, 60, and 75 degrees, but the play between 0 and 30 is smooth yet not loose, and the first catch really occurs at 30 degrees. The unit swivels right-ward 90 degrees, and left-ward 180 degrees, making for very convenient and numerous bounce/swivel/zoom combo settings. These combinations are particularly useful if you wish to turn the camera on its side to get vertical shots. The F-stop range is 1.4-11, being set using the "F/STOP" button. The "MODE" button allows switching between the automatic "Through (T) The (T) Lens (L)" flash settings and the manual options. My only serious complaint is something that everyone will notice immediately: Opening the battery-bay cover yields that it is precariously attached to the flash body, feels, looks, and simply IS flimsy, and, by design, it is allowed to slide back and forth on its track. This will be the first thing to break, as it slides and folds back into the closed position. (Be gentle.) But the output did seem to be a little inconsistent, as well (unless it was user error). As for metering when insufficient light is available, the large red lamp on the front flashes, signaling that you need to make some exposure adjustments.Another thing: After three minutes of idleness while turned on, the unit will go into "sleep mode." But just press a button (preferably the "LIGHT" button), and the flash will return to duty.Another thing II: The base really doesn't fit completely snuggly into the hotshoe--even when the wheel is fully tightened. (A little annoying.)The Vivitar Series 1 DF-293 TTL/M also ships with a bounce card and a diffusion filter, both of which attach and are easily removable. And they come with an attractive velcro-closure case.Overall, the DF-293-NIK (Nikon fitting) flash is a great performer, and it has all the essentials for a top-camera-mounted, versatile flash unit. And for less than [$], it's a steal of a bargain.

I used this flash at a wedding. It worked awesome for most of the day. Half way through the reception I changed my batteries. Then it started to only work occasionally and by the end of the night it wouldn't work at all. I tried three sets of batteries to no avail. [...]As long as I don't have issues with my new one, I'd say it's a great TTL flash for the price! My only other complaints are that the door that holds in the batteries slides out kind of weird and doesn't seem very high quality. Also, I wish there was a place to plug in a battery pack. But, for the price, it's still a great flash.

Comments about Vivitar DF-293 Bounce Zoom Swivel Flash for Nikon:

I bought this flash last month because the price was good. I decided to use it at last weekend, but it only work fine for 1(one) shot, it´s correct, only one shot. It just quit working all of a sudden in the middle of a photo shoot. Now it became a very expensive flash.

Comments about Vivitar DF-293 Bounce Zoom Swivel Flash for Nikon:

Okay, I rated this 5 stars call me crazy. First off, let's get real a strobe for $ dollars you have to expect some sort of trade off -- Build Quality. I figured that going in which is why I'm looking past it. For the price you get quite a bit. Low Light Assist, easy to navigate buttons, varying flash powers, and a manual zooming flash head. It works as advertised in TTL mode quite well. The recycle time isn't as fast as my SB-700 but I am not using this to do rapid fire flashes. I use this to have a portable lighting setup so I can do studio lighting on the go and be more portable. I'm very happy with this and it works well with my Wireless triggers and TTL cable without skipping a beat. I'll probably end up buying another one of these in the near future.

5 minutes out of the box, mounted to camera, and a quick skim of the users manual. I am now captuing images that were never possible with the harsh pop-up flash. My only gripe is that the cover over the power switch came off the first day. Easily remedied with a tiny dab of glue on a toothpick tip.

This is an excellent, very powerful flash at a great price. It works great with my Nikon D40X. I like the fact that you can override the camera's control of the flash by switching the flash to manual mode. I take interior and exterior photos of automobiles for the web, inside a poorly lit crowded showroom with mixed lights (natural and fluoresce). This flash allow me to use bounce flash to take the exterior photos and avoid the car's reflectors redirect flashback. The nice swivel top gives me the flexibility I need to get enough indirect flashlight of interior car shoots and avoid excess lighting. Two small issues: the batteries are hard to load the polarity correctly because the + and - sim old are extremely hard to see; the diffuser can be easily lost because there is no place to secure it while not in use. I highly recommend this flash.

I am a casual user and purchased the product to take photos at my daughter's graduation. I am amazed at the variety of features for the price. I need a manual with a lot more detailed explanation. I am learning how to use the various settings by trial and error.

This is for amature photography, but this unit works great and is 1/3 the price of the similar Nikon branded flashes. It has broad flexibiliy for all conditions.
