If you're serious about getting better image quality in your photos, the Pentax 645D Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) can move you pretty far along that road: with a format similar to the film 645 system (44 x 33mm), this camera delivers a stunning 40MP of resolution in a package not much larger than top-of-the-line DSLRs (6.1 x 4.6 x 4.7"/15.5 x 11.68 x 11.93 cm and 49 oz/1389 g).

JPG (8-bit depth) and RAW (14-bit depth) files offer superb image quality. The 645D is compatible with all Pentax 645AF2 bayonet mount lenses.  It has an 11-point autofocus system and 77-segment metering system, an all-glass trapezoid pentaprism viewfinder, and a 3" LCD display.

A full range of white balance, exposure and playback options are available, as well as sensitivity from 100-1600 ISO, and in-camera HDR image capture that automatically takes 3 images and blends them into a single photo to more accurately represent the range of light intensity levels found in real scenes. A Lens Correction function automatically compensates for lateral chromatic aberration, as well as barrel and pincushion distortion common to wide angle lens photography, with select Pentax 645 lenses.

The 645D can capture 1.1 frames per second at full resolution, and offers mirror lock-up, multi-exposure, bracketing and interval functions also.  The rugged magnesium alloy body is weather-sealed and cold-proof to resist rain, snow, dust, etc. It has dual memory card slots (SD/SDHC) for convenience, and operates on a single rechargeable Li-Ion battery.  Look closely--you'll see the difference.

Bought 645D in January 2014 and immediately tested it in Zion (I shoot landscapes only). Still going through the files but I can say already that the image quality is superb and files are very flexible! Before buying into Pentax 645D I had extensively looked through files from d800e, 7r, p45+/P65+, IQ160 and IQ180 and I could not see any substantial increase in color depth or dynamic range in Phase backs, may be except for IQ180. Files from 7r and d800e were big and nice but colors from all the medium format sensors including 645D were always better and smoother, so I eventually decided to go with Pentax. Being too cautious at first I went with used glass only: Pentax-A 35/3.5, Pentax-A 75/2.8, and Pentax-A 120/4 Macro, and to my surprise all these lenses are sharp and very usable! I did get one extra battery but will use it only for very long trips and remote locations. Ergonomics is very good, viewfinder is very good. The size and weight is comparable to 1Ds, just a different shape. All in all I am very glad I finally switched to medium format sensor.

Comments about Pentax 645D Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

This camera is every bit as good and even better than the one's in line before it. I do weddings and families, no more double shots to make sure every thing was ok with the smiles and eyes open. I've been using the Pentax 645 for almost 20 yrs. and it has yet to fail me. One thing that bothers me is that it would not take the 64GB card, may need an update.

Comments about Pentax 645D Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I bought this camera 18 months ago second hand but as new from a US retailer. Since I bought it I have run 6 different cameras alongside each other including a full frame Sony a850 and various high grade lenses. My 35mm DSLR cannot compete with the 645D and the Sony system is being sold. I am also selling an infrared camera, leaving only the 645D, a serious (Foveon sensor) compact, one infrared- DSLR and a point and shoot for casual and clinical work (I am a medic).

I am now using my 645D for all serious photography when I can carry it with me.
My lens line for the 645D is::

          x645 35mm, 75mm, 300mm and a 80-160mm

          x67 135mm macro, 55mm f4 (new version) 105mm f2.5 and 200mm

All the lenses are superb including the somewhat maligned 135mm macro (see my review of this lens).

          What about the camera:

          Positives
The camera delivers consistently beautiful and rich photographs, bursting with detail and refinement that cannot be captured with the 35mm format. Its simply a question of sensor area.
The camera is not overly heavy and handles well - mechanically its an objet d'rat
The large mirror is damped very well with less mirror slap than much smaller cameras
Viewfinder is bright and big - really wonderful
Makes all my other cameras feel like toys - this is a real photographers machine
          Robust
          Electronic level sensor
Range of superb and inexpensive legacy lenses from x 67 and x 645 range
          Design, design and design
Much less expensive than competition yet still a superb piece of engineering

          Negatives:
The dynamic range is lower than I had expected (DXO lab tests bear this out). Sky blow outs can be an issue with slight overexposure on bright days. So underexpose slightly and this issue disappears. Shadow detail is very good
White balance (when set at auto) is not as good as many 35mm DSLR cameras. Can be corrected easily in Lightroom
          No live view (CCD)

          Notes on Usage
For landscape purposes the top ISO of 1600 is quite adequate, but clearly this speed ceiling is quite anachronistic by 2014 standards
Long exposures can produce quite noisy images even at low ISO's. Use of the long exposure NR feature totally eliminates this issue and produces crisp, smooth files
There is a real difference in the quality of files from ISO 100 to 200. The ISO 100 ("expanded sensitivity") option is disabled by choosing other menu options (such as dynamic range adjustments). It is VERY difficult to find this in the instruction manuals and I suggest that for absolute image quality the DR should be left on default (off) and ISO 100 used, with a tripod, and care with exposure taken. These are all after all conventional photographic skills that any photographer should understand.

          Comments
This was the best equipment purchase of my photographic career. This camera however is really a high grade landscape tool.

Ricoh - Pentax seems to have a vision of the future.

It will be interesting to compare it to the 645Z in the near future. The newer camera will be essentially have a different market in mind. Clearly it is aimed to be a medium format camera that does it all for a bigger market (well heeled or pro!).

It will gain in many ways as the transition from a CCD sensor to a CMOS sensor will allow for live view, video and a much higher ISO ceiling. However there is still a school of thought that holds out that the image quality from a CCD is superior to CMOS and there are technical reasons to support this, despite the huge progress in CMOS sensors over recent years.

From my own perspective if I wanted a MF camera that does it all I would choose a 645Z, but I have other cameras that do it all and still have reasonable IQ. I doubt that for landscape use the 645Z offers any real advantage over the 645D, but for those who shoot action the 645Z would probably be a no brainer.
For those with unlimited funds possessing BOTH cameras could be an option.

Comments about Pentax 645D Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

and it's astonishing. 70% of my shots are portrait/fashion/environmental/lifestyle, and the rest is whatever grabs me (street/cityscapes/landscapes); my main box was a Canon 5D Mark II for the past 4 years. The 645d's images are discernably different--note, "different" and not necessarily "better", though many are--than those I've taken w/ the 5D. 1st, the light capture makes for crisper & more nuanced images. 2nd, detail appears where it was formerly lost--@ 50% magnification, rivets in steel support beams become features; in previously shot 5D images, they were merely interestingly darkish spots. 3rd, colors appear true and requires less, or even no, post-production tweaking. I discovered my earlier-made point (that "different" is not necessarily "better") when I compared close-in (but not macro) shots of flowers. The 5D image used a 100mm/2.8, the 645d a 55mm/2.8; both subjects were bearded irises, by happenstance both taken in early afternoon on a sunny day but some 2 years apart. Amazingly to me, the detail was equal; I had expected the 645d's image to show more than the 5D simply because of the difference in sensor size. What WAS different was how colors rendered: those of the 645d's image made the iris more life-like; and I'm convinced it's due to both how the highlights blend into shadow, as well as how actual color is captured. Oh, sure, there's other stuff I like (HUGE grip enabling hand-held shots sometimes possible, logic of its buttons, ease of menu navigation, its blocky profile), but all that good stuff is nothing compared to the very, very high (and aesthetically different) image quality. Not so great, but totally understandable/accepted, is the weight: I'm aware of the beast's heft whether hauling it around or actually placing it onto the tripod. Nothing I'd read about its weight--or that of digital medium format cameras in general--prepared me for the reality. I'm not keen, either, on the marquee telling the world that I'm using a Pentax; why didn't they use LEDs while they were at it, too? And, yeah, I have yet to become accustomed to the 5-8 second write time for each image but have come to see the process as akin to fishing--a reason to think on the work @ hand and how to improve what I'm doing. The bottom line's I'm glad to have made the jump to medium format photography. Sure, the 645z's faster processing and 51+ megapixel sensor were seductive, I just couldn't swing it. Successful living's all about compromises but the 645d's many, many fine qualities/features make it easy to put up w/ the stuff that makes it less than perfect. Enough already. Just go buy it, take eye-popping pics, and live happy.

The size and weight is comparable to 1Ds, just a different shape. All in all I am very glad I finally switched to medium format sensor.

Comments about Pentax 645D Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I'm using this for landscape and portraiture work, but it could be used for some light reportage work as well.

The files are great. I own a D800 too, an a lot of people like to compare the two. It's a silly comparison - the files from the 645D, and the look you get with medium format lenses makes this a totally different camera. The only similar thing is the number of MP. The quality of the pixels though - 645D hands down. I'll only use my D800 for heavy reportage work really now, and I might even sell it.

4* only because the dust cleaning mechanism on the sensor isn't the best, so you still have that to deal with, and also because it came with the wrong battery charger, which was kind of a headache and screwed up the first shoot I had planned with the camera.

This isn't the fanciest MF digital obviously but it's all I could afford and it's a tough camera and I expect to use it into the ground over the course of the next 5-8 years or so. I don't think the image quality/technology on this will get obsolete considering my 6 year old D700 is still a completely relevant and capable camera.

I 've also been a pretty dedicated medium format film shooter up until now, and I don't think I'll be using it nearly as much as I used to.

The 645N has more features than most digital cameras, yet is very easy to use. The images are 3D like, and can be easily enlarged on my 36 inch Canon printer. I think Pentax has a real winner for the advanced amateur and the pro. I use my 645N in outdoor photography and am very happy with it. PJ

Comments about Pentax 645D Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I purchased this camera to make use of the excellent lenses I owned for the previous film version of the 645N. The images with this camera are far superior to any other digital camera I own. One web site compares the quality of 40 megapixels to a 4 x 5 camera. The dynamic range of 12 stops means I can take a photo with sunlight streaming on one side of the image and the other half in shade and reveal detail throughout. It means fill-flash is just not needed. I have shot backlit white flowers with detail in the entire image. I have shot in the Metropolitan Museum of Art with sunlight hitting parts of statues and not lost detail in the highlights nor shadows. I have made 20 x 30 inch prints that are of unbelievable quality.I now shoot in Raw format and use Lightroom to process the images. I did find I needed a faster computer than my 5 year old one to process the images. Amazingly the Windows Picture Viewer in Windows 8 can open the Raw files! The battery seems to last forever. It still reads a full charge after a month of shooting. Very few new lenses are available at this time. I have purchased several excellent lenses on [*]for about 15% of retail. Dealers in Japan and Hong Kong seem to have a large supply. In summary, this is a camera that produces fantastic sharpness, can hold detail in a range from deep shade to sunlight in one image, and is more reasonably priced than the competition. It is larger and heavier and slower to use than a DSLR, but the images are far superior.

EVEN WHEN HAND HOLDING THE CAMERA THE IMAGES WERE ULTRA SHARP AND THE COLORS WERE STUNNING. GREAT FOR LANDSCAPES, PORTRAITS, STILL LIFES, FASHION. LOT OF DATA TO WRITE SO DON'T BE IN A HURRY TO TAKE PICTURES.

Comments about Pentax 645D Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

Sold all of my Canon gear to buy this camera, and glad I did. The enhanced dyanmic range and larger sensor/files alone were worth the move. There is so much more information to record, and then manipulate. Shoot portraits against a solid or out of focus background and your subjects seem to pop off the page or screen. Everyone who sees landscapes shot with it say "I feel like I'm there."

If you're trying to make money with photography, this is the camera that can add that bit of difference to what you shoot.

I'm going on 60, and manual focus lenses in 35mm format were getting hard for me to use. Not here. With the bigger sensor and viewer, it's a snap. So, I'm able to use the older, far less expensive glass designed for the original 645N.

This camera requires you to think. It's so sensitive that lighting, focus, and composition require that you actually know what you want to accomplish. What a great concept!

I need to add two more things to the review I wrote just yesterday (see my review "Hugo") about this camera. These are things that I think many photographers will really appreciate:1) In addition to capturing in proprietary Pentax RAW, the camera will also capture in DNG. This is what I choose to do, and I can only wish that all manufacturer's did this.2) The digital level is very handy.

Comments about Pentax 645D Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I recently returned from a week long landscape photo workshop at Waterton-Glacier National Park in Canada/Montana. Although I have have my Pentax 645D for some time (purchased from B&H), I really hadn't used it extensively. This was my first heavy use of this camera.
I'd like to report that I am totally happy with this camera and the images it produces.
Some of the strong points of this camera are:
                                  1) First of all, image quality is fantastic. Two of the participants used Phase One IQ180 80MP cameras. My images held up equal to theirs, and actually one of them thought that the Pentax's dynamic range was better than the Phase One's DR.
                                  2) I have both of the new Pentax MF lenses (the 25mm and the 55mm). I was worried that the older legacy Pentax lenses might not hold up to digital and a large sensor. My worries were unfounded, thanks to Pentax making quality lenses all along. However, I'm really hoping that Pentax/Ricoh gets going on making new lenses for this system. I know one may feel that using "inexpensive" used older Pentax lenses my be a problem, but it isn't. Don't fret that you are not using a brand new Mamiya/Schneider lens on a camera body that is as expensive as this one. You're lucky getting bargain lenses. Also, the batteries, cable release, and charger are very reasonably priced (they also fit Pentax APS digital cameras as well). The 120mm macro is just one really neat lens.
3)The ergonomics of the camera are great. It's easy to use. I use the instruction manual as a reference only when I have a question that needs to be answered.
                                  4) It's the only medium format digital that has ultrasonic sensor cleaning.
                                  5) I encountered no electronic glitches. The Phase One guys (both of them) would have to "reboot" their cameras every so often by taking out the battery when using mirror lock-up. P.S. I use a cable release and mirror lock up for all my landscape photography.
                                  6) Reminder: like all MF digital cameras, there i no image stabilization. For my landscape work this is not a problem, since everything's done on a tripod.

If Pentax doesn't introduce a new MF digital replacement at this year's Photokina, I'm thinking about getting a second body to take with me on photo shoots as a backup in case of a disaster. I can purchase almost 3 Pentax 645D bodies for the price of another manufacturer's single meduim format digital body!

The 645D is an excellent medium format SLR that does an incredible job of showing great detail. The unibody is excellent in handling the camera without having to worry about installing backs. The controls are easy to find and operate. The only thing missing is live view and this is why I am giving it a four star rating.

I am mainly a landscape photographer. My style tends to be more meditative than rushed. I use tripods, mirror lock-up, and cable release. The 645D is a nice hybrid between 35mm convenience and medium format image quality. The menus are logical and intuitive, there is easy mirror lock-up, and there is sensor cleaning. It is solid and feels good in the hand. This is not a slow camera, but if you want blazing speed and very high ISO ranges stick with the 35mm format. If image quality is king then this is your camera.

Comments about Pentax 645D Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I am a landscape photographer so the jump from the Pentax K-7 was a no brainer. Love the camera, being familiar with the K-7 program it was an easy learn.I have purchesed a 35mm, 45-80mm, 75mm, 120 mm macro, 200mm and 80-160mm zoom 645 manual lenses on the inter-net and they all work great. Yes the preview and file writing are slow...we are talking 40 mb files afterall...no big deal for me as Landscapes do not tend to move! Price wise this camera has opened up the Medium format to a whole new generation of photographers who just could not afford the $30K price tag of the other medium format cameras.

The Pentax was purchased as a field camera-- primarily for landscapes, outdoor activities (e.g., sailing) and aerial photos--that will allow prints of over 30 to 42 inches. For these requirements, the performance of the camera has been excellent.Pentax has designed a camera that significantly facilitates use in the field and has considered the needs of photographers, including owners of their previous MF film cameras like myself. The older FA 645 lenses and the longer 300 and 400mm ED 6x7 lenses operate very well with the camera and the image quality has remained superb with these optics.None of the functions are intrusive and they are intuitive, especially if you've previously used Pentax DSLRs. Though a bit heavier and large, the camera balances very well, which speeds set up. Notable functions for field use include the bright high resolution viewfinder, weather seals, built-in dust removal, fast and accurate autofocus, big/easily accesible buttons for all regularly used operations, large readable fonts for these buttons and the menu, built-in vertical and horizontal levels, dual tripod sockets, and the hard glass display and LCD screens. The battery also seems to have a relatively long running time.On the negative side, there are a few minor quibbles. The playback is a bit slow, due in no small part to the size of the files. Using high-speed cards are likely to help. The screen shows 98 percent of the actual picture (100 percent would have been preferred). The mode dial uses a lock button (stiff detents would have been adequate).[...]

"get to know it"the more i use it,and the more i read the manuals"there two of them",the more i am able to make use of it's abilities.the writers do need to learn how to communicate with laymen, more details.with the pentax 45mmf2.8 and the 75mmfa f2.8 it handles like a dream.the 80-160mm zoom works best with a monopod or a tripod.picture quality is surperb, the hdr is a big plus.i really like the in camera conversion from raw dng to jepg, once you figure it out.i wish the software they supply prosessed raw dng.the same way as it does jprg.but what the heck.i am ok useing the older 645 lenses.the three i have plus the 2x converter handle all the situations i am likely to encounter.i think they got it right, anyone who wants more in a camera is just hard to impossible to please.[$] covered everthing and put me in the game.
