G-Technology's 8TB G-SPEED eS 4-BAY RAID Array with four 2TB Enterprise Drives is an economical, high-performance, high-storage solution designed for professional video content creators. This compact and whisper-quiet G-SPEED eS sports a 3Gbit eSATA interface great for transmitting the large amounts of data demanded by video files. It features the maximum memory per G-Speed eS with four 2TB hot-swappable Hitachi Ultrastar 7200 RPM SATA drives. With this Enterprise-quality setup, you definitely have the memory you need to store video and to speedily and easily access it for streaming.

Since an eSATA host adapter for connecting the unit to your computer is not included, you have two options for deciding on one. If you decide to use another company's port multiplier aware eSATA host adapter, you can configure the G-SPEED eS as only a software RAID or a JBOD. As your second option, if you use G-Technology's PCIe 4x RAID controller, you will have a much greater variety of RAID options. The controller allows you to configure your G-SPEED eS as a RAID 0,1,5,10 or JBOD. As such, you have more flexibility in choosing the right configuration for your work, whether you need more storage, extra reliability, simultaneous access to video files, or some ratio between the three. When used with this controller, it supports multi-stream SD, ProRes 422, and uncompressed HD workflows. For example, a single G-SPEED eS used with the G-Tech controller supports up to four simultaneous streams of ProRes422 HQ or one stream of uncompressed 1080/60i. Moreover, in terms of just storage capacity, one terabyte of memory holds up to 84 hours of HDV 1080i, 17 hours of DVCPRO HD 1080/60i, 13 Hours of 8 bit SD, 10 hours of ProRes 422HQ, 10 hours of 10 bit SD, and 2.25 hours of HD 1080/60i.

When used with G-Technology's controller, you can setup your RAID configurations and monitor your system via an easy-to-use, web-based graphic user interface. Accessed via any internet browser on your computer, this simple GUI can easily keep track of your RAID's performance and, in the event of a disk failure, have the G-SPEED eS alert you via email.

Along with this safety mechanism, the G-SPEED eS features locks for each drive, a sturdy aluminum casing, and two internal fans for preventing the hard drives from overheating. In addition, the G-SPEED, itself, will sound audible alarms in case a disc fails, the internal temperature nears 140°F, a fan stops, a fan spins too slowly to cool the system, or when the enclosure is improperly disconnected from the G-Tech PCIe RAID controller.

Beyond all these exceptional features, should you ever decide 8TB of memory isn't enough, you also have the option of scaling up. If you use the G-Tech PCIe RAID controller, you can connect up to four 8TB G-SPEED eS enclosures at once. With another company's host adapter, you might be able to do the same, depending on what it allows. If you do go for the maximum amount of scalable memory, you can connect four enclosures of 8TB apiece for a total of 32TB of memory!

All told, the 8TB G-SPEED eS is an economical, high-storage, high-performance RAID hard-drive array designed with all the right features to keep you, the professional video content creator, busily at work!

          Comments about G-Technology 8TB G-SPEED eS 4-BAY RAID Array w/ 4x 2TB Enterprise Drives:

I have three G-Speed es arrays. One recently failed due to a faulty power supply. I contacted their tech support only to be told that since my unit was no longer covered by warranty, there was nothing they could do for me. I understood, and expected to have to pay for repair, but they told me no repair option was available. Period. They suggested I buy a new unit. Are you kidding me?! That was a $2000 array! The whole point to having a RAID 5 array is to protect your data from any kind of failure. A quick Google check revealed a way for me to replace the power supply myself for $50. It will be a pain and I will have to take the time away from my other work as an editor, but I will certainly do that rather than give them several hundred to thousands of dollars for a new unit.

Beware! G-Technology is no longer the customer friendly company it once was. Since being acquired by Hitachi, it has lost that title. Buy with caution.

          Comments about G-Technology 8TB G-SPEED eS 4-BAY RAID Array w/ 4x 2TB Enterprise Drives:

Very good array with exceptional speed and great for use in holding data for real time HD editing. My only complaint is that the installation instructions are a bit lacking, so if you don't know much about computers and drive configuration you may be lost setting it up.

                Comments about G-Technology 8TB G-SPEED eS 4-BAY RAID Array w/ 4x 2TB Enterprise Drives:

The drives come Raid 0 and ready to go. However, they will be the first of 4 equal sized arrays and will have very important media files on them, so I reformatted for a Raid 5 to have some redundancy in case a drive goes down. The instructions were simple to follow and I was up and running very quickly. The only issue I had was the over 24 hours it took for the software to turn an 8TB array into a Raid 5. They say it is supposed to take approximately an 1:45 per TB, but it took 3 times that.

Also, the fan is not as quiet as advertised. It sits next to my MacPro Tower and is easily louder then that.

But so far so good. Excellent design, very easy set-up, easily expandable with another Array, good read speeds. A most excellent value. I truly hope they put out another series based on the new Thunderbolt I/O.

I have to say, it's a rarity these days, but G-Tech has great customer/tech support. I had a bunch of questions and them some problems in my configuration and they were very attentive knowledgeable and fast with their response. I now have 3 eS or eS Pro boxes.

I first purchased because of the Hitachi quality, but now because of the great service. Keep up the great work.
