Product Highlights
  • One-Handed Positioning via Trigger
  • Quick Setup & Sturdy Lockdown
  • 15.4 lb Load Capacity
  • QR Plate w/ 1/4"-20 Stud & Video Pin
  • 4 Built-in Bubble Levels

The Sunpak Compact Pistol Grip Ball Head w/ Quick Release Plate facilitates smooth, single-action camera positioning in any direction by simply pulling and releasing the trigger. One-handed operation of the head means your remaining hand is free to press the other trigger – the one on your DSLR camera.

The head's pistol grip facilitates an extremely quick and easy way to set your shooting angle: just squeeze the trigger, position with the rubberized handgrip, and release, and the camera's position is locked. This single-handed operation enables you to set forward/backward and side-to-side tilt as well as panning around a full 360°. The included quick-release plate enables fast camera mounting (via a standard 1/4"-20 camera screw) and allows you to switch to handheld shooting in seconds.

Featuring both 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 mounts, the Compact Pistol Grip head mounts to virtually all tripods. With four built-in bubble levels around the head, you'll always have instantaneous feedback as to whether your shot hews to the horizon.

With a heavy load capacity and an integrated spring-loaded video pin on its quick-release plate, the Compact Pistol Grip head also supports compact camcorders. An ideal application might be a rapid-fire video production that involves a series of static shots.

I bought two of these, one for my tripod and one to put on my macro flash bracket. That was the only way I could make my quick releases match because this product does not match any other quick release. Everything else about this product is fantastic.
The camera is aimed by simply pulling the trigger, pionting the camera then releasing the trigger. It is super fast and great for wildlife or any other subject that requires fast set up.
The quick release has a clever spring that pops out the qr plate when the double lock is released. The same spring then automatically locks the plate when the plate is inserted, amazingly easy.
The colar allows about 30% of movement in every direction with a 90%cut out. The cutout easily rotes 360% so that in the horizontal position a simple squeeze of the trigger allows rotation of a full 90% in any direction.
Now tilt the camera to the verticle position and the grip offsets the camera to clear the tripod. In this position the camera will now rotate an amazing 360% in every direction!
The tension is plenty strong enough for a light to medium wieght camera set up, but there is no tension adjustment and I would not trust it with a real heavy camera. The manufacturer claims that the tension should not loosen up as the product ages, but I have not had it long enough to know if this is true.
There are four convenient bubble levels.
The 2 pistal grips I purchased had an extra lever on the top right. This lever is not pictured in in the product photos or instructions. It turned out that loosening this lever will allow the head to pan without disturbing any of the other settings. I dont know if they all come like that but this was another pleasant surprise.
I use my pistal grips to photograph animals. The challenge I have is to get the shot quick an not scare the animal by fumbling around with a lot of controls. This head is as fast and simple as it gets. This product was actually one of the least expensive pistal grips I looked at. The quality and functionality make this product a must have if you need to work fast on a tripod.
This head also comes on a number of sunpack tripods if you dont already have one. Dont forget to get a few xtra plates so you can quickly mix and match equipment.

I this as a complete tripod assembly and I am currently shopping for a head to replace this one. It is perfectly functional as long as you dont need to use portrait format. The friction lock is not strong enough to hold the camera in position, and the lens droops quickly out of position. If you dont need to shoot portrait format it will suffice but I find it totally useless. also, the grip is fairly difficult to squeeze due to the short handle. After a while your hand starts to hurt

On the plus side it is very quick to adjust otherwise and work pretty well except for the issue noted

Comments about Sunpak Compact Pistol Grip Ball Head w/ Quick Release Plate:

The small grip (only enough room for two and a half fingers) is extremely hard to actuate, impossible to pan, and generally useless. It came with a carbon fiber tripod which is wonderful but, now I have to replace the grip. Very disappointing.

Comments about Sunpak Compact Pistol Grip Ball Head w/ Quick Release Plate:

This is a nice and compact tripod head. I like the levels, solid grip on the foot, and fluid movement/no stiction.

I gave this 3 stars for 2 reason - the pistol grip is smaller than I expected (under 3" long) and it takes a lot of strength to pull the pistol trigger.

The small grip length makes it difficult to get a solid and comfortable grip on the handle. The grip strength might be okay if it were adjustable. If it is adjustable, I haven't found out how.

I would recommend this to a friend, after they tried it out themselves first.

Comments about Sunpak Compact Pistol Grip Ball Head w/ Quick Release Plate:

I was planning to put this head on my tripod legs and having my fluid head on the slider. I am now using this $ head more than my $ one because this cheap little head works so well with getting smooth dolley movements. Though really, almost any ball head will work well because the weight is all in the dead center of the slider plate but the handle is a nice addition for extra grip. The only complaints I have are in the lack of a tension lock and the fact that the trigger can be really hard to pull. I don't know if it's just my copy but if my hands had to pan with this thing for a long period of time I don't think I would be able to pick up a spoon at the end of the day. Fortunately that's not what it's made for. Besides those two things I really can't say anything against it.

I picked it up as a cheap alternative to the Manfrotto pistol grip for a spotting scope and it doesnt disappoint. The weight rating is definitely overly generous but it locks up solid with my light spotter and works very well for what im using it for. For the price its perfect.

This ball head is pretty well constructed. The ball grip holds my D-SLR very securely and I trust it in any direction. Because of the rigid construction it is, however, pretty heavy for a tripod head. Weighs about 4 times as much as the stock head I removed, but I don't mind the extra weight. It is only a few pounds more so not that big of a deal.Be advised this is a screw on head so if you don't have a that type of head on your tripod now you will need to modify it to fit this head on it.

Works exactly like (dreamed) expected. Now I let permenently the "foot" screwed in place in the camera. I can fix it in 1 sec to the tripod. I didn't know, it allows also to span horizontally, great! Using it during 3 weeks.

Comments about Sunpak Compact Pistol Grip Ball Head w/ Quick Release Plate:

I do a lot of outdoor photographing, and thought this would come in handy. IT's Great! I still have to get use to it, but it won't take long. The pistol grip makes it easy to move the camera without all the thumb screws (loosen and tighten). So far I have found nothing negitive about it.

The concept is great.. So is the price! But, using it the first time, the release button popped out.. Like Boing! The spring twisted when I reattached the camera tripod clip!B n H is the best, but the product is a cheap plastic disappointment!

Comments about Sunpak Compact Pistol Grip Ball Head w/ Quick Release Plate:

Does not hold a Canon 5D Mk II (950gms without batt.) with the heavier 24-70 f2.8L (811 gms) in portrait mode at all. Also, the upper half of the piece where the trigger is attached has a lot of play after using it for hardly a week.

Wouldn't recommend at all if you plan to use it with a heavier DSLR.

(I got this along with a Sunpak tripod - Pro 423PX; now plan to buy a different ball head).

Comments about Sunpak Compact Pistol Grip Ball Head w/ Quick Release Plate:

I've moved up to start using a heavier camera and needed a new, resonably priced, tri/monopod head. From the start this thing has been a jewel! The best example is when I've had to adjust the head to a position that is not completely flat horizontally. It worked like a charm and held the weight of my 6D, 24-105mm L lens without any issues.

Comments about Sunpak Compact Pistol Grip Ball Head w/ Quick Release Plate:

attached to bogen 3129 tripod adds 4 inches to height .
celestron c-5 attached or w/o 80 ed refractor about 6 lbs. each better hang on to the scope when squeezing the grip.
needs some type of spring or a rubber boot to keep down the movement when squeezing the grip.
don't set scope for a 30 degree angle and turn your back...the ball can slip, and cause the scope to fall...hopefully not to the ground.
advertised 15 lb. capacity is not accurate.
further testing is in order...more later.
