The Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens is a high-quality telephoto zoom lens that is designed for exclusive use with Pentax digital SLR cameras. It offers a focal length that is equivalent (in 35mm format) from 27.5 to 207mm. This wide coverage is ideal for a variety of telephoto applications, including portraiture, sports and scenery.

The image circle in DA-series lenses is designed to perfectly match the 23.5mm x 15.7mm size of the CCD used in Pentax digital SLRs to optimize camera performance. This design also contributes to a drastic reduction in size, weight and production cost compared to 35mm-format counterparts with similar specifications.

Pentax DA (DA-Star) zoom lenses come equipped with the SDM System, which assures smoother, quieter auto-focusing operation by using a built-in supersonic motor. Like all Pentax lenses, this lens is treated with smc coating for maximum light transmission, sharp definition, and high contrast images.

In addition, SP (Super Protective) coating made of a special fluoride compound has been applied to the front surface of the lens through the use of a unique evaporation process. As a result, the lens offers excellent water and oil-repellent performance and makes for easier cleaning should the lens be accidentally smeared with fingerprints or cosmetics.

Extended 7.5X zoom range is ideal for a wide range of shooting conditions.
Weather resistant to handle damp, inclement conditions.
Compact and lightweight design for easy portability.
Direct Current (DC) motor supports quick, quiet autofocus operation.
Pentax Super Protect (SP) coating helps repel dust, water, and grease, making the lens easier to clean.
Pentax Quick Shift focus system allows instant on-the-fly switching from auto to manual focus.
An aspherical lens element helps to compensate for spherical aberration to maximize image quality.
Equivalent to 27.5-207mm in the 35mm format.
Developed specifically for Pentax digital SLR cameras.

If you are reading this review, you are probably in the same position I was a few weeks ago: Trying to decide whether to buy this lens or not. And if you were like me, you probably came across several unfavorable reviews. Here is why I believe some of those unfavorable reviews are off the mark.

The image quality is compared to prime lenses. What is the point of that comparison??? 99% of SLR users already know this fact. This lens should be compared to other zoom lens. My reference point is my daugther's Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VRII. My opinion, Pentax edges out the Nikon which by the way is an $850 zoom. And I am not saying this just because my daughter is shooting Nikon's and I am a Pentax guy.

Another critism is the images are soft on the very edges especially at the extremes. Again, zooms of this range need to make some trade-offs and I beleive Pentax got the specs right. A very broad middle of the image is very sharp. Plus "soft" is relative to the tolerance of the user and the types of pictures being taken.

Another knock is the speed of the lens. Okay, who does not want a faster lens. But who wants to pay significantly more for a giant and heavy zoom lens.

In summary, here is what Pentax is offering. A really well built lens, weather sealed, with a most useful range, that sells for under $450, uses a relatively small 62mm lens, and weighs a manageable 14.5oz.

If you need any more convincing of the image quality, take a look at the Pentax photo galleries. And did I mention the lens is really sweet matched up to the K5.

The structure and operation of this lens are without issue, my major observation is that this lens creates significant vignetting on all f/stops below f/11 on my K-5! Here's how to check this and prove to yourself for this lens or any other.
    1. Set your camera to Aperature Priority Av and prepare to take a series of exposures from f/3.5 to f/22.
    2. For this series, set the lens to manual focus and focal length to about 35mm zoom. Intentionally defocus lens since we don't need a sharp image.
    3. Capture images of a blank wall. White is best but most any light color will do. It doesn't matter what the WB is although you might as well put it on AWB.
    4. After each image, close the aperature to the next highest reading in steps of 1 f/stop and take the next shot. Do this for the entire range allowing the camera to set the shutter speed.

Import the images into Adobe Photoshop.
Open the first image taken at f/3.5 or f/4.0.
Click on Image Adjustments > Auto Tone.
Now, you'll clearly see the vignetting. Don't cry or toss the lens yet because you can "cure" most of the problem.

In Photoshop, after loading a real picture, do the following:
    1. Click Image Adjustments > Exposure. Drop the exposure by -.5
    2. Click Filter > Lens Correction
    3. Set the correction to vignetting only.
    4. Camera Pentax all
    5. Lens Model > Pentax FA 31mm f/1.8 AL Limited
    6. Click Ok and Photoshop will improve the vignetting on a real image. It won't improve the horrible vignetting as a result of the white wall capture and subsequent Auto Tone.

Would I recommend this lens? Perhaps but not using it in the conventional manner. Lens must be corrected.

Comments about Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens:

I purchased the SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens by Pentax when I bought a K5 body when they first came out it was my first and only lens for a long period of time I definitely made the right decision the photos have been fantastic, it is quick to focus on any subject matter and all shot so far have turned out perfect. The WR rating was a big consideration as it matched the K5 perfectly if you can only afford one lens when you're just starting out this is the lens to get.
It seems to me that the people who were having any kind of trouble with this lens tend to have an older Model Pentax E.g. anything before a K7 and anyone with a K5 or a K3 have no problem with this lens whatsoever it's just an observation I have seen with the reviews.

Comments about Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens:

I use this as my everyday lens for vacations and around the house for my family and pets.

After using it for a couple of years, my first copy got dropped five feet onto a wood floor and ever since has been not so sharp (still works though). So I got a second copy to replace it to use on my K3. This lens is sharper at the wide end and a little bit softer at full zoom. Overall a good performer.

Comments about Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens:

I own and use mostly DA Limited prime lenses, which I love for their quality and compactness. However, some time sightseeing in rainy Japan convinced me I needed a weather resistant walkaround zoom that would cover 90% of the focal ranges I need without having to swap lenses in bad weather. I had bought this lens for my son as part of a K-30 kit, and tried it on my K-5. I was impressed. When I bought the K-3, the 18-135 came at such a good price that it would have been silly to refuse it.

Intrinsically, the K-3 has much better resolution than the K-5, due to the higher pixel density and the removal of the hardware anti-aliasing filter. So it is a tough test for a lens. I was very pleased to see the results: increadibly sharp near centre, great colour, great punch. It's a little soft near the edges, but I can live with that on a walkaround zoom. CA is also noticeable near the edges at the longer focal lengths, but not at the short end.

The weather sealing and inbuilt very quiet and fast DC motor are real bonuses.

Overall, this is a MUCH better lenses than the technical reviews suggest. And this from someone who normally prefers to shoot quality primes.

Comments about Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens:

I bought this with my first ever Pentax dSLR body (a K-30) to start off with. I like the weather sealing and I've already made use of it shooting in a range of inclement and cold weather situations. I've had great success using it outdoors when lighting was good (early morning, sunset, and oddly enough, in the middle of urban snowstorms). I do wish I had a faster prime lens for indoor/low light portraiture and the like. That will probably be my next purchase down the line.

The price on this lens is ordinarily a bit high for my taste. I waited until it was on sale for a considerable discount. You can also pick them up used in good condition fairly easily. I think that's the way to go.

But yeah, if you are like me, travelling in a lot of occasionally (quite) inclement weather conditions and want to switch/pack lenses as little as possible, this is a good pick to start you off on your Pentax adventure.

Comments about Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens:

With an APS-C sensor, as on my Pentax K-30 and many DSLRs, this is a mild wide to serious tele (it would be way wide to mild tele for a full frame).

My experience agrees with the consensus of reviews I've read, that the features are nice but image quality is less than one might hope. In fact this zoom range is very convenient - with one lens you can shoot almost any common situation. I've had good results with outdoor pics in day and early evening, and some indoors without flash, if ambient light is bright enough. f/3.5 is pretty good for a zoom with this range.

The downside is slight fading at the corners toward the ends of the zoom range, and softness at all focal lengths. It's best at the "normal" (35mm for APS-C), but I've now compared with the Pentax 35mm f/2.0 and the latter is a bit sharper. However, as someone who's upgrading from a little point-and-shoot, the camera plus this still amount to a big boost in quality.

Ideally one should eventually equip a good camera with high quality wide, normal and tele lenses. For me, this lens covers the rest of the range until that happens. On this basis I'd recommend it for a beginner. The build quality is good and water resistance (matching Pentax K-30) is a plus.

BTW we've also had surprisingly excellent results using a semi-toy fisheye attachment on the front.

I have both the Pentax DA 50-200mm WR Lens and the Pentax DA 18-55mm WR Zoom Lens for my k5. I wanted to get a walk around lens that would give me a wide angle and a decent zoom. After reading reviews on several different lenses and looking at the pros and cons I decided the Pentax 18-135mm WR Lens was my best choice since I wanted a WR lens. Recently I went to the New England Patriots' training camp practice and I just took my 18-135mm lens not wanting to carry several lenses. I took over a hundred pictures and I was very pleased with all of them shooting from 18mm to 135mm.

Comments about Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens:

I bought this as a walk-around lens for my K-5 when I'm on vacation. I already had the 18-55 AL II, which was the upgrade for the original K-5 kit lens.

The Pentax 18-135 has a solid feel to it. It is definitely heavier than the 18-55 kit lens, but not heavy enough to be a problem. I don't have any lens creep. It is definitely sharper than my 18-55 lens and I'm perfectly happy with the image quality. It has a very pretty bokeh. The auto focus is fast and relatively quiet. If the camera is only making a minor adjustment, you may not hear it at all. The lens doesn't have much lens flare, even when I intentionally shot into the sun. I didn't see any significant fringing or color aberration in any of my test shots. The color in my shots is beautiful. I also didn't see any major vignetting in pictures. I agree with the reviews that the distortion is a little funky. I really don't notice the distortion until I apply the lens correction in Photoshop. The lens correction makes minor changes, but I think the photos would still be acceptable without the lens correction.

The filter size is 62 mm, which is not standard for Pentax lenses. The lens cover is a little tough to get on and off if you have big hands because there isn't much room between the lens and the hood. An extra-wide filter might not fit inside the hood, but a standard 62 mm filter fits fine. I added a 62 mm B+W clear 007 filter and didn't see any vignetting.

For me the lens is exactly what I was looking for. It has better image quality than the 18-55 kit lens, has a good zoom range for general use and quick auto-focus. The weather resistance is also a nice extra.

Comments about Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens:

My normal travel kit is the Tamron 28-75/2.8 and the Pentax 15/4 Limited. But when I had the opportunity to go to India during monsoon season, I decided it was time to invest in a weather resistant lens. I found that the Pentax 18-135mm WR Zoom is an excellent choice for a travel or walk-around lens. On my K20D or K-5, it is small enough to fit into a holster style camera case (such as the Tamrac Adventure Zoom 4). It is light enough to carry all day, and there is no zoom creep. The DC focus motor is quiet and snappy. I found the range to be perfect for both wide shots of buildings and street scenes as well as zoomed in on detail. And the biggest plus is the peace of mind not having to worry about it getting wet.

Of course, there are always trade-offs. As many reviews state, the lens is sharp in the center, but a little soft around the edges, and some photos show chromatic aberration, but no more than most other "super zoom" lenses. To keep the weight down, the minimum aperture is a little slow, but with modern camera's high ISO capabilities, shots in indoor lighting are still reasonable. And while the lens price seems a bit high when I compare it to the price of a K-30/18-135 kit, I'm not regretting the purchase.

Overall this lens is a great choice for travel or outdoor use. While the image quality is not to the standard of a higher end zoom, I expect this lens will be on my camera anytime I need to travel light or expect less than perfect weather.

Comments about Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens:

I shoot in all kinds of places and conditions outdoors and didn't have a WR (Weather Resistant) lens for the really bad days. I decided to pick this lens up since it has a good usable range that suits me and if I found myself needing it in bad weather I would be less tempted to change lenses in the field.
I mostly shoot with the Pentax DA Limited prime lenses and this lens is not as good optically as those. But I can't really fault it for that because they are top shelf primes and this is a mid range zoom. IQ is decent but not phenominal. I think it will be good enough for when the weather is really bad. I'm taking off a star for lack of sharpness but color is good, focus is fast and quiet, and the lens is relatively light and compact. I'd like it to be faster but that would make it bigger, heavier, and more expensive. I haven't checked the focus calibration on my K-5 so that may improve sharpness if it's a little off. Bottom line is it's good enough for the intended use and I like having the peace of mind when it's nasty out.

Comments about Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens:

Got a chance to use it this week and it produced great shots with my K-5. Walked round Busch Gardens snapping shots using P and TAV and not one shot was off. All keepers, even with me experimenting with a new camera. I also had the confidence in the pairing that if a sudden rain popped up I wouldn't have to run for cover. I took a shot of Griffon at the top of the track (200+ ft) when i viewed it on my computer later
I was able to zoom in and clearly see the expressions on every rider including my two sons. I walked around the park with it either strapped to my wrist or hanging on my Spider holster (also from B&H) I don't have the neck strap attached. I never had an issue with weight or size. Very happy with this lens will be using it this weekend - sightseeing trip.

Also shot 1 video with it nice and clear results

I have two lenses that work wide to normal and normal to telephoto. With this one lens, I can get most of that utility without carrying the second lens or changing lenses. For some time I have noticed that I often need to take semi-wide angle and semi-telephoto shots at the same time at the same location and quickly. This lens allows me to do it. It does seem to be slightly slow to autofocus but I haven't missed a shot yet.

I was looking for a solid walk-around zoom lens, something I could throw on my K-5 and leave the kit bag behind. This lens fits the bill. It's wide enough for decent landscape shots and has enough range to shoot portraits as well as close-ups, plus it's weather-resistant!

Some have criticized this lens for its lack of sharpness relative to quality Pentax primes but for my purposes, I haven't noticed and the flexibility is great. Not being a fixed-focal length lens makes this both affordable and relatively lightweight though it won't be the best for indoor/lowlight at max zoom.

The SMC Da 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL DC WR lens is a great walk around len. It is light, easy to focus manually, auto focus is fast and accurate and it is sharp with very good color rendition. I live in the Pacific Northwest and am useing it on my K-5 so because it is a WR lens I do not fear bad weather. It is a significant upgrade over the kit lenses and while it does not have the reach of the 50-200mm it has enough to very useful and you no longer need two lenses to cover a lot of ground.

The lens is very sharp and optically smooth. I have not fully tested the WR aspect of the lens, but it seems like a great feature. This lens is fast focus as well.
