Questions? Ask our experts:

The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens from Canon is a relatively light telephoto zoom lens offering a broad range of focal lengths from a single optic, with good optical quality and excellent autofocus performance from its ultrasonic (USM) motor. It has a circular aperture diaphragm to help create natural out-of-focus highlights, and its built-in image stabilizer allows you to handhold the lens at shutter speeds 3 steps slower than would otherwise be possible. This enables sharp imaging when shooting at telephoto lengths and even when shooting in low light. The two-mode stabilizer can be activated to only correct shake in the vertical axis for panning action when desired as well.

The lens' USM AF is very quick, smooth and silent, and it features a zoom lock button that keeps the lens safe and secure when not in use or when being used at the shortest 70mm focal length setting. The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 has Canon's "Super Spectra" lens coatings for ideal flare-resistance, and is ideal for travel, sports, and general photographic applications.

A versatile telephoto zoom lens for both film and digital cameras, it provides a wide focal range that can encompass portraiture and of course magnify distant subjects. When used on an APS-C format camera, its equivalent focal length range is 112-480mm.
Two-mode optical image stabilization compensates for camera shake and enables shutter speeds 3-steps slower than would otherwise be possible without incurring image blur. Mode 2 is best used when tracking a moving subject.
An ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) provides fast and silent AF action.
UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) lens element reduces secondary spectrum aberration.
Circular aperture diaphragm for natural-looking out of focus highlights
Canon Super Spectra lens coatings to suppress flare and ghosting
Zoom ring lock keeps zoom at 70mm and prevents lens 'creeping' during movement or even while shooting.

I purchased this lens along with my Canon 6D + 24-105 kit. I've posted a review of that as well. It had an instant rebate making it a real great deal. I use this lens with no filter but bought a lens hood for protection. I shoot a lot of my kids indoor sports and this lens is amazing. To me it feels sturdy and has no lens creep. I rarely if ever get out of focus pics. I've compared my pics with ones taken with the EF 70-200 2.8 at the same indoor sporting events. While the bokeh of the 2.8 is superior, overall picture quality of my pics are better due to high ISO capability of my 6D over the other guy's 7D. Plus I like to have a little crowd reation in my shots. The image stabalization is pretty good but I always use a monopod unless in dayligt. This is my go to lens. This lens also has the reach I need. With a full frame camera 300mm is a must for sports. I would have to get the Sigma 120-300 2.8 at 10x what I paid for this one to achieve better results, "2.8", without having to crop. But then again, I use this lens a lot between 70mm and 120mm plus that Sigma is a monster that would be a pain to lug around all day. So for now f4/5.6 is just fine with the 6D. This lens may have some flaws in technical tests but in the real world it's pictures look fantastic.

I have some very nice Canon lenses. This is not my favorite and it is rarely used.

While most of my Canon lenses are sharp at the end of their min/max capabilities, this one is SOFT when fully extended to get that 300mm. The loss of sharpness is very visible to me and has frustrated me often. I get better 300m clarity on my teens point and shoot.

To be fair, it is a really decent lens in the mid ranges if you don't have already have one. That is why I wish I could give it a 3.5 rating. I have learned to zoom all the way out then pull back on important shots. If it is something I am sharing ONLY on line (Wunderground, Flickr etc) and print quality is not that important, I will go the full 300mm, reduce and sharpen it in PS.

I would recommend it to: someone who can't afford L Series; someone who doesn't need the full 275-300mm for large quality prints; and to someone who needs it for sports snap shots.

I would not recommend it to: someone who is seeking to look up the nostrils of wildlife from afar; or someone who will be making 11x14 of said wildlife zoomed shots for entry in professional class competitions. Save up and get the L series instead.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I had wanted a lightweight long lens. i have a 70-200mm f/2.8 that is a bit large for a small girl like myself. Don't get me wrong! I still love my 70-200mm and i still prefer it for the type of photography I do with it. I wanted something lighter in weight but had just a little bit more length to it. This lens does that. it's tack sharp and i love it!

Very nice lens, which I used on recent trip to Yellowstone. Good for close-ups however lens is noisy when focusing. I did not use it for video but therefore I cannot collaborate if you could hear it in video. Produces nice sharp pictures.

I haven't done any serious shooting with this lens yet, but I can say I am completely satisfied. It is my first long range zoom lens, and I think it's a perfect starter. It is quite a bit heavier than what I am used to but what should you expect? I've gotten used to it already. I love the lock button to avoid movement. I definitely recommend.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I'm a bit disappointed with this lens. I've done several tests and this lens takes terrible photos at anything less than f8. At the higher f-stops quality is good, but I'd definitely recommend something like the Tamron 28-270mm VC PZ, which is much lighter, has a more versatile zoom range, and stays much sharper throughout the entire focal range. The lens is also really heavy and lacking a tripod ring mount, so you get lots of nose pull on the front. Forget about taking video when fully zoomed, unless you are using a serious tripod head. Autofocus is decent, although again not when fully zoomed. I usually shoot manual anyways.

I bought this lens for nature photography, mostly animals but also birds. But then I found myself using it for portraits. It is a solid performer on all counts. The build quality seems excellent. Unless you are going to pay twice as much for the L lens your can't do better. The focus is fast and accurate. The images are very sharp. I occassionally use a monopod for early morning and early evening shots. I have not needed a tripod under any circumstances.

I purchased lens with a camera body to receive a promotional rebate from manufacturer. It works as it is supposed to; capture an object within 70 to 300 millimeters of the zoom lens capability and shoot. I like the dynamics of the lens and it makes a great light weight lens to carry in your bag. The lens has been around for a while so it was not specifically made for the newer AP-C Aperture Sensor Camera Bodies as mine however for the novelist it's a non issue.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens:

Okay, so I'm a wedding videographer, so obviously a lens with limited f-stop isn't ideal, but boy-howdy do I like this lens. I've been using this 10 year old 300 lens for a while because it's what I had, so I didn't have much to compare it to, but this one has been incredible. It's image stabilization works GREAT when shooting video, and it doesn't run too loud. The auto focus is great as well, just a little bit louder than the stabilizer. I'm sure you'd hear it if you were running the on-board mic but if you're using the on-board mic you've got other problems that I can't help you with.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens:

Give you good chance to take some relatively sharp pictures with less than $. As an entry level, I'm satisfied with image quality, weight, IS, etc. The focus is fine but not that silent and I have to say it's a little slow. You get what you paid. The sharpness reduces at 300mm, especially when you are using the largest aperture. If shooting some 'static' objects, it might be nice to use F8 instead. Overall, this lens can be a good practice.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens:

This lens is an upgrade from an EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II and has exceded my expectations. There is clearly a difference in an EF lens versus an EF-S lens in quality of build, quality of 'glass', and features. I especially like the two-mode auto-focus for panning in video mode. Its not an L series lens but it is great value for the price.
