The EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Lens from Canon is a telephoto zoom lens ideal for day-to-day use because it is particularly light and compact, especially given its long focal reach. Able to magnify distant subjects, it also compresses the space between subjects within the frame and with a shallow depth of field at its longer lengths, it offers attractive out of focus bokeh. Its minimum focus distance is 4.9', even at the telephoto end of its zoom.

Versatile telephoto focal range ideal for portraiture and magnifying distant subjects. When used on an APS-C format camera the equivalent focal length range is 120-480mm.

I have a Canon EF 70-200 mm F2.8 lens that I have used for shooting ballet and similar performances (without flash, of course). But that lens is pretty heavy, which is a disadvantage for travel, and it won't fit into my Clik "fanny pack." Most of my focus now is landscapes. But Ion my travels recently encountered one of those opportunities where a zoom would have been very useful. The 75-300 mm lens is light enough for travel, and my initial shots of birds hanging out at our feeders have been quite impressive (with a Canon 6D). Obviously, it won't replace the 70-200 mm given its specs, but it is a useful backup lens in the field, and you can't beat the price. And it fits in Clik bag with the other two lenses (Canon 16-35 mm and Tamron 24-70 mm).

I got this lens for Christmas to mount to my T2i. This is my first telephoto lens. While it isn't bad for a start, once you get over the "WOW" of being able to zoom in on your subject this lens leaves a lot to be desired.

The main issue is it is SOFT, especially at 300mm. Compare this to a 50mm F1.8 stopped down to 2.5 or so and you'll see what I mean. A GOOD telephoto should be nearly as sharp. This lens doesn't even come close.

Combine this with the strong chromic aberration (purple hazing) with sharp highlights. While you can correct for some of it, don't expect to get great shots with strong direct lighting and/or highly reflective subjects.

All that being said you CAN get good shots out of this lens under the right conditions. With flat lighting the CA fails to rear it's ugly head, and with close subjects at 300mm, the bokeh quality is good. However, if the conditions aren't perfect you will end up with soft, purple-tinted photos.

For those with a less decerning eye this lens will do a decent job. But, if you are a bit picky with your photos, even if you're an amateur (like me) you'll probably want to pass on this one.

We've been badly in need of a good telephoto lens for the school sporting events my yearbook staff covers throughout the year, and we hit the jackpot with this baby. First time we used it was at a water polo game, and we got some great shots that make it look like the photographer was right there by the side of the pool instead of standing way in the back, out of the referees' way. We're very happy with it.

I am a videographer. I got this lens by references thinking it was similar to the 70-300mm that I had used before. I was wrong. If your in video don't get this lens get the 70-300. Even mounted correctly on a tripod, crane, or steadicam breezes cause shakes.

I relieved this lens as a Christmas gift 2 years ago. I use it almost daily for bird photography. This lens is good for the beginner, but not for an experienced photographer.Good- I slipped and fell on ice and my camera (rebel XS) hit first, and the lens still worked afterwards. I use it almost every day and it still works greatBad- I often find the zoom to be too short for bird photography. The auto focus is not that reliableNot good for experienced photographers

I got this lens in my Canon T5i kit. It's great to have a lens of this focal length. I also have a 18-55mm. While I sometimes wish I had an 18-135mm zoom lens so I wouldn't have to change lenses as often, it is nice being able to go up to 300mm.

Comments about Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Lens:

We purchased six of these for our school's program. We are delighted with the clarity and ease of interchange with our existing lenses. It is lightweight and although we haven't tried the auto focus, it does seem to have that feature as well. Recently used this lens to shoot student music performance and was amazed at the clarity from such a far range, especially in a low light setting.
