The Elinchrom 27.5" Rotalux Deep Octa softbox has a narrow shape that reduces the spread of light. Compared to a standard Octabox, the Deep Octa delivers a more focused soft light (with the included internal and external diffusers), or sharper shadows and crisp, direct light (without the included internal and external diffusers). This is an ideal on-location softbox for the Ranger battery system.

I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH, about this piece of equipment. I am SOO impressed with everything. The engineering, thank you Swiss, is genius. The fabric...heck...I think this may be something from space; I've never felt anything like it. It almost seems unreal...kinda like a cross between foil, paper, and the thinnest fabric you've ever felt. Wild.
The way the trans skin goes on is the best I've ever dealt with. It holds on because of precise dimensions, slipping over the opening and the struts have enough pressure to hold; but the Velcro adds extra measure of holding power.
The deflectors (I bought the kit) use the umbrella port...GENIUS!!!!
Now..as for the light quality. One word...STUNNING and FLEXIBLE. Ok, that was two, but it's true. This box isn't capable of putting out anything other than stunning, even light. Plus, there's so many combinations that I have yet to even try.
The way this folds up...I may consider dumping all of my umbrellas and getting nothing but more Octas!!!

The picture is very misleading. i have assembled this unit a couple different ways, each time bending the arms to curve at different lengths, and it is just not possible to get it to look as deep as the product photos, without having the 8 sides cave in. If I bend the metal rods only slightly, then it holds a perfect shape and is not flimsy, however it is not deep at all, more like a "regular" softbox. The metal rods they supplied are just not long enough. You will also have to spend extra for the elinchrom transparent frost reflector.
I was expecting a parabolic-like dish, which this is definitely not. I ended up returning this, perhaps getting the hensel 32 inch parabolic umbrellas for travel, and also investing in a REAL Mola-brand beauty dish (you can always attach white cloth diffusers with central transparent deflectors to beauty dish to dual purpose as softbox).
The only good use I see this for is for traveling and on location, but it is NOT a deep dish.

Perfect light, easy set up but I had some issues getting down (not so easy if u need to do quickly and on your own).

Comments about Elinchrom 27.5" Rotalux Deep Octa:
The deep octa is giving a narrow contrasty light which is easy to control. A big improvement compared to some of my cheaper square softboxes.Even though it is foldable, I wish it was a little quicker to assemble for each shoot.

If you're only going to get one modifier for your Ranger Quadra, the 27.5" Deep Octa can't be beat. The light is simply incredible and can be used for portraits, product shots and even group photos, given enough distance between subject and light. It's lightweight and sets up in seconds so you can bring it literally on every shoot.

The light that comes out of this Deep Octa is just so beautiful! I have been using the 100cm version for a while now and got this 70cm one for individual portrait sessions and weddings. Its really easy to setup and I use it with both Ranger Quadras and Nikon SB-800 / SB-900 speedlights through a home made bracket.

This is a wonderfully light umbrela for use on location.
Travleing with this germ is a breeze.
Now THE most critical part:
The light is beautifully soft and adds tremendous wrap-around light for portraits in the field.

Why did I wait so long to purchase this? Perfect addition to my Ranger Quadra.
One tip-- reach hand inside Octa and use elbow to release stress on the spine to make it easier to fold up.

A must have with the Elinchrom Ranger Quadra!! It's not difficult to assemble and the materials are sturdy and not cheap looking. I only use one light and reflectors and my results are professional quality. I watched a video on You Tube starring Joe McNally using this softbox along with the Ranger and I was sold!! I immediately ordered it on B&H!! Don't hesitate and settle for cheap ones!!

Confession: I've been lazy; thought a softbox would produce results less flattering than an umbrella. Also though the Deep Octa would take more time to set up. Wrong on both counts. You get what you pay for. Elinchrom products are worth every penny.

Real nice octabox. Since Broncolor don't make octaboxes i bought this and modified the speed ring for use with my Broncolor strobes. It worked very well and is a nice tool.
The Rotalux is well made and folds down like an umbrella. It has a two cloth design, so you can choose if you want soft or extra soft look, thanks to Elinchroms design you also can use this almost as an large beutydish. It comes with the best softboxbag i have seen so far!

I mostly use this to shoot portrait and fashion. It provides an amazing light quality. You can even use it almost as a beauty dish due to the reflector that comes with that you can adapt and taking off the diffusers.
It is amazing how lightweight it is and how portable. And it is great the size that has once it´s up.
The material might feel a little on the cheap side. However I believe is not.

I bought this softbox for the field with my Ranger RX battery/light system. I also have the beauty dish, which I love, but wanted something lighter and more portable also. This softbox fits the bill. Love the portability, quality of light and size. It's just a great size box.

Unbelievably versatile. Use all the baffles and you have a ridiculously soft light. You have the options of the outer baffle, inner baffle and a reflector included. This makes a really nice beauty dish substitute. The size makes it useful for about 1-3 people. Well built, light but solid. Excellent product, no regrets at all!
