The ViewSonic Pro8200 1080p HD Projector is a dream machine for the true videophile.
The Pro8200 makes beautiful, vivid pictures thanks to its Texas Instruments DLP DMD (Digital Light Processor Digital Micromirror Device) imaging panel with BrilliantColor. Unlike other technologies such as LCD that use just three primary colors to produce the image, DLP technology with BrilliantColor uses up to seven separate colors. BrilliantColor not only improves color accuracy, it brightens secondary colors as well. This combination increases the brightness of the colors by up to 50 percent over DLP projectors without BrilliantColor for accurate, true-to-life images. It makes all of its magic while drawing a maximum of 310W. In Standby mode it draws less than a single watt.
That great color technology would be wasted, however if you couldn't back it up with strong specs and the Pro8200 has them. Start with the Pixelworks PW980 10-bit video processor which enhances color and detail. Add 1080p Full HD resolution, the highest standard available, and back it up with 2,000 ANSI lumens of brightness and a crisp 4,000:1 contrast ratio, and you've got a powerful projector that can meet the challenge of ambient light and absolutely blow you away at theater light levels.
The Pro8200's wide connectivity includes 2 HDMI, component, composite, S-video and audio jacks. The microphone input coupled with the built-in 10W speakers is useful if you're using the Pro8200 for business or educational purposes or if you just want to serenade your audience at home.
All of those great specs however, could be ruined by a noisy cooling fan. At 31dB the Pro8200's Normal mode is quieter than many projectors' so called "Whisper mode" and in Eco mode it hushes down to a barely perceptible 27dB while extending lamp life to 6,000 hours.
All of this high quality projection power weighs less than 9 lb, operates on a 100 - 240V AC power supply and is compatible with NTSC, PAL and SECAM signals, making the Pro8200 a global citizen that's ready to travel if needed.

I did some extensive research before I settled on this unit. My prior unit was a BENQ PE 7700 which I used in what I call a modified theater room. It' s open to my sun room where I do have darkening shades. To my surprise this unit gives me an outstanding picture in full sun light. It fits very well mounted on my 7'-6" ceiling. The top of my 80" screen is 11" below the ceiling. The auto keystone feature give me perfect coverage. I made some minor adjustments to color temp for an outstanding picture for HDTV, Sports and Movies. I've not found any not so great things about it yet. I love it. I love the price and I love the picture. I would highly recommend this unit for the average viewer.

I purchased this projector to replace a Mitsubishi HD1000 projector after its color wheel kicked the bucket. Out of the box, I was very impressed with the brightness of the Pro8200. However, as typical with most projectors, it needed some calibrating with the brightness, contrast and color balance. It's decent for watching TV. It's GREAT for watching sports with bright lights. But it's not even average for movies. If it's a dark movie (i.e. Batman) then forget about it. It's a decent projector. However, I do wish I would have waited and saved a few extra bucks for a better one.

I was an early inovator, buying the SP7200 for >5K. I kept it going all this time (several fixes) but alas the main board gave up. I shopped primarily for DLP and a size that would fit my built-in hushbox. Ater an easy start up, had to run an HDMI cable in the wall... I could'nt believe the blacks! So far it's great, I can't even remember the SP7200.... lol

Comments about Viewsonic Pro8200 1080p DLP HD Projector:
I went for the 5 stars because it's difficult to find fault here. Price, while higher than projectors with lesser specs, is the best price once you demand HD 1920 px.
I do presentations with gorgeous graphics and could not compromise on a lower res (1024) pixel projector. Image brightness is great and looks great even with a few overhead office lights left on.
Multiple input types are good to have, though I'm only using the HDMI out of my iPad (via Apple adaptor) All the input options do make the unit a tad larger than some but really, it's neither large nor heavy. It comes with a neat carrying case and shoulder strap, so it is portable enough. (it's all the other stuff I have to carry to a presentation that's bulky - like the screen!)
Unit is whisper quiet. Really.
Automatic Keystone correction works great - but note - only in VERTICAL Correction- there is no HORIZONTAL Keystone correction - not even manually. Was a little disappointed there.
Like all but the most expensive projectors, the Zoom range is limited.
One last "knock" - the front leveling foot? To call it CHEESY is an insult to Cheese. Totally out of place on an otherwise nicely designed and functional unit.

I made the mistake first buying the optima Hd20. I found the picture had sporatic noise but more importantly, does not work with any Mac Book Pro through DVI-HDI with adapter. I later googled it and read of many others who confirmed this. Lucky I was able to return it to B&H and got a much beter projector for the same price.
The Viewsonic looks great, works with my computer and comes with a really nice carrying case. The optima does not compare. At all!

This is my 3rd projector and 1st 1080P. Two previous ones were Optoma DV10 and HD66. DV10 died on me after about 4 years and HD66 starting to show dead pixles less than two years.
Viewsonic Pro8200 is very easy to setup with very flexible zoom function to fit your screen size. Since I have everything hooked thru my Pioneer sound system I never listen to the on board speaker and can't give any feedback on that.
I set it to eco mode since it's quite bright but it always default back to eco mode off and I don't know if there's anyway to have it set permenantly.
The fan noise is fairly low, lower than previous Optoma and it shuts down instantly with no delay. It finds input source very quick unlike the Optoma HD66 hunts a lot and audio always comes on few seconds before the video, and even the audio is delayed after player already started playing. Not with Viewsonic.
Since I only have it for few weeks we shall see how it perform in the long run.

Comments about Viewsonic Pro8200 1080p DLP HD Projector:
This projector actually has less RBE compared to other DLP's in this price range, except for the more expensive Optoma hd33 which has a 6x color wheel. The color wheel on this PJ is 4x with a 7-segment color wheel, and I can assure readers that the RBE is less than a 6-seg 4x wheel comparing to other PJ's like a Mits hc4000 or Benq w1100/w1200/w6000. I know because I owned them and the Viewsonic is the first 4x color wheel I do not see RBE on too much.
The reader most likely made a common mistake that is easy to do, the brightness was likely mismatched compared to his new and old PJ. The brighter projector will produce more RBE even with a better color wheel. Once the brightness goes down to his other PJ's level, the RBE should be less than the 4x 6-segment wheel.
You will not find a brighter projector in this price range that does this well overall (the Panny ar100u is close). I am a serious projector hobbyist that has tested more than 30+ projectors and I write projector software in my spare time.
Sure there are better projectors for much more money for some uses, but this projector holds its own and leads the pack in general in this price category.

This unit has great picture quality, great range, and is easy to operate. The bright picture is great and is visible even in semi-lighted conditions. Some of the drawbacks I found were that the pictue is not adjustable upo and down in HDMI mode, which is irritating when you set it up with your laptop and have to physically move the unit again afterward for DVD.
Another irritating feature is that because it is a table-top unit, mounting it from the ceiling is a pain. The 3 - bolt mounting system is tough to find a hanger that works with it: I ended up fabricating my own. Also, the angle it throws at when inverted puts the picture on the floor unless you seriously angle the projector itself.
Other than those issues, which I overcame, it is a nice unit under $1000 taxes and shipping included. I recommend it.

I had a Mitsubishi HD1000 that served me for around 5 years. Recently the color wheel started to make noise. Although I was able to fix it (I dismantled the color wheel and used a dremel to polish some steel parts that was touching the glass wheel)I decided that I should purchase this projector. Only to replace the lamp (that in my case was at the end of its life) for the HD1000 would cost me almost half of this projector price. So the price is awesome ([$] in my case).I have mounted this projector on the ceiling to display HD content (movies and TV series) on a 3 meter wall. The brightness is excellent (much better than the HD1000). You can even watch when the room is illuminated. It is full HD and the picture quality is excellent (I recommend you to change the color settings according to a professional review that you will find in the internet). It also has a larger zoom than a regular projector which enable you to play with the projector location. The only problem is the noise that the projector is making when it is on but if you choose to mount it on the ceiling it will not be a problem.I also noticed that the build quality is inferior to my old HD1000 so I hope it will not break before the lamp life will end.
