The ViewSonic Pro8400 1080p HD Installation Projector is both a dream machine for the true videophile and a powerful workhorse for permanent installations in large venues.

The Pro8400 makes beautiful, vivid pictures thanks to its Texas Instruments DLP DMD (Digital Light Processor Digital Micromirror Device) imaging panel with BrilliantColor. Unlike other technologies such as LCD that use just three primary colors to produce the image, DLP technology with BrilliantColor uses up to seven separate colors. BrilliantColor not only improves color accuracy, it brightens secondary colors as well. This combination increases the brightness of the colors by up to 50 percent over DLP projectors without BrilliantColor for accurate, true-to-life images. It makes all of its magic while drawing a maximum of 360W. In Standby mode it draws less than a single watt.

That great color technology would be wasted, however if you couldn't back it up with strong specs and the Pro8400 has them. Start with the10-bit video processor which enhances color and detail. Add 1080p Full HD resolution, the highest standard available, and back it up with 4,000 ANSI lumens of brightness and a crisp 3,000:1 contrast ratio, and you've got a powerful projector that can meet the challenge of ambient light and absolutely blow you away at theater light levels.

The Pro8400's wide connectivity includes 2 HDMI, component, composite, S-video and audio jacks. Additionally the unit features USB type A for photo and graphics support as well as USB mini-B for direct projection of media from a PC. The built-in 10W speakers suffice for most presentations if you're using the Pro8400 for business or educational purposes, but you'll probably want to match this projector with a complete sound system. The Pro8400 is also network capable thanks to its RJ-45 connection. You can control as many as 8 projectors over your network as well as allowing 4 presenters to connect to any single projector.

All of those great specs however, could be ruined by a noisy cooling fan. At 33dB the Pro8400's Normal mode is quieter than many projectors' so called "Whisper mode" and in Eco mode it hushes down to a barely perceptible 29dB while extending lamp life to 4,000 hours.

All of this high quality projection power weighs less than 9 lb, operates on a 100 - 240V AC power supply and is compatible with NTSC, PAL and SECAM signals, making the Pro8400 a global citizen that's ready to travel if needed.

Comments about ViewSonic Pro8400 1080p DLP HD Installation Projector:

This projecter has a super bright image and at 1080P there were times when image quality very high. Unfortunately, there were many more times when the image was just plain bad. This would probably be a good projector for presentations, but not for home theater.

The the image quality suffered with a variety of media. With blue ray - the image quality was usually very good, and with a 1080P HDTV signal it was usually pretty good too (not always). But with regular DVDs the image quality wanders, sometimes good, sometimes not-so-good. Some DVD's maintaied a pretty good image while others looked pretty bad, but these exact same DVD's all looked fine on my old projector. The problem isn't with the DVDs. But with most of the content from my Comcast Digital hookup, the image quality was all over the place. Skin tones often looked 'pastie' or 'grainy', and they often didn't even look human. It was so bad at times that it was actually hard to look at the faces on the screen. They often look like they are made up entirely of blurred blotches of varing hues and intensities; superimposed over a real face. To me it almost looked like the projector specifically recognizes faces, and then applies some kind of errant video compression/alteration that just turns out horrible. And beyond just the problem with the way faces looked, the color balance shifted all over the place from one scene to the next. And the brightness varied all over the place too. Also, in very bright scenes the contrast dropped way down to where the deep blacks were just shades of gray. The bottom line here is that much of the non-HD content from my Comcast Digital connection was pretty un-watchable.

Another problem with this projector was that the image processor couldn't keep up with a medium speed pan or zoom. This resulted in a very jerky motion across the entire screen. The jerkyness was so bad it resembled watching a Charlie Chaplin movie whenever there was camera movement.

But probably the most annoying thing about this projector is that every time the input changed resolution (like changing channels or whenever a commercial comes on) the ViewSonic logo pops up for about a full second while the projector tries to lock onto the new resolution. I could not find a way to turn this logo off and just show a blue or black screen like everyone else does while they are syncing. That stupid logo poped up probably 50 times while channel surfing. It pops up when commercials come on. It pops up when a commercial ends and the program or movie resumes. It pops up all the time! I guess if you are the manufacturer you would think that this kind free advertising is a good thing, but for me this 'feature' alone was a deal-breaker. This is an unforgivable insult to me as a consumer.

I have had 4 0other home theater projecters, and none of them suffered from these kinds of image quality inconsistencies.

We bought the Pro8400 projector for use in a conference room; it was mounted in the ceiling on a proper mount. The projector is bright and clear, but it would not retain the setting for being mounted in the ceiling. Every time it was fired up the projection would be upside down and backward even though the menu setting was correctly set to front projection from a ceiling mount. I have had 2 new Pro8400 projectors (one new and one exchanged), both had the exact same problem. Viewsonic Tech. [...] Obviously, I needed a projector when I bought the Pro8400, [...]. I have now ordered a BenQ and I am sure it will be better than the Viewsonic. [...]

Despite it's claims, this is not a projector for a ceiling mount application. Even in inverted mode, the top of the image does not shoot straight from the lens. It is projected downward, requiring either the projector to be significantly HIGHER than the top of the screen, or tilt the projector up a great deal and correct the image with the keystone adjustment. The latter option will significanly reduce the image size and brightness and will not fill the entire screen. Unless you're planning on setting the top of the screen better than 12-15" below the ceiling level, DO NOT buy this projector for a ceiling mount application.
