Comments about Sachtler Cine DSLR Fluid Head:

I have used this for my DSLR rig and due to the capacity I was able to use my EX-3 on this head also with excellent feel and response. The additional Features and weight handling on this head enables you to fine tune and really Multi purpose this head. The movement is as smooth as some of my much more expensive Sachtler heads and I am so very pleased. I'm glad I purchased this and not the cheaper models.

Comments about Sachtler Cine DSLR Fluid Head:

I needed a fluid head whose counterbalance would manage my 1.7 lb. camcorder today and yet have the capability of handling a larger 8+ lb. rig when I upgrade in a couple of years.

The Cine DSLR handles my lightest configuration with no problem at its lowest counterbalance setting, but at the same time would have no problem with the equivalent of a Canon xf305 or Sony PMW-200.

The head executes silky smooth pans and tilts and is extremely solid. I've mounted it on a Gitzo carbon fiber 1325 tripod with a 75mm bowl adapter.

If you'll have a wide range of weight configurations, this is the head for you. (Unfortunately, Sachtler recently discontinued it so it probably won't be in retailers' inventory much longer.)

The head matches my general philosophy of buying equipment that is flexible and built to last rather than a series of temporary, albeit less costly, solutions.

Good, but not the ultimate DSLR head

Comments about Sachtler Cine DSLR Fluid Head:

The head feels and moves great, just like any other Sachtler. No doubt it is a high performing head and is capable of great results.

My qualms with this head are in the price, and the lack of useful functionality offered over cheaper models, the FSB-4 for example. The unique features this head offers over others, as I see it, are the payload range (2-11 lbs), the extra long mounting plate, and having 10 counterbalance increments instead of 5. Having tested both this head and the FSB-4 extensively, here are my findings:

Payload: Yes, 11 lbs is better than 9, but not that much better. If you are going to be living in that range, you'll prly be better off with an FSB-6 or 8 anyway.

Long mounting plate: I did not find this helpful at all. I have never had a problem getting a balanced position with the normal Sachtler plates, which are fairly long, but not too long to start getting in the way. The Cine DSLR plate is simply massive and makes the profile considerably more clunky, for what I see as little to no gain. On most of my lenses, I can't even move the focus ring freely because this plate got in the way. Of course you could buy a smaller plate (for $70) but that would defeat the purpose of buying this head, foregoing one of the primary features.

Counterbalance increments: I was hoping that with the smaller increments, I would be able to get close to exact balance without any drag on. This was not the case at all. I tried multiple different lens and accessory setups, and not one balanced properly without applying drag. Really not much improvement over the 5 increment system here.

In conclusion, unless you are someone who really needs the 9-11 lbs range in terms of payload, and for some reason you don't want to step up to an FSB-6 or 8, I see no reason to buy this. The FSB-4 is $200 cheaper, and it comes with legs, albeit not great ones. I am not knocking this head for quality, certainly it is up to Sachtler performance standard, but it is overpriced and under featured, and it can't really compete with the rest of the FSB line.

Comments about Sachtler Cine DSLR Fluid Head:

I have owned and used many tripods from most major brands and was very excited to use this new Sachtler head. I fitted it to a 100 mm bowl and sturdier carbon fiber legs for enhanced stability when using 300mm and longer lenses. It works very well, with an amazing range in tilt and pan moves. However, when used with a power supply, I can no longer swap batteries without removing the head slider attachment.
Recommended, but expect to buy accessories in order to ease your workflow if you use a power supply.
