This shoe adapter is very good. It holds after-market mic that I bought very securely and is quality made. The only con is that it raises the mic almost 2 inches above the camera itself, greatly increasing the height profile of the camera/mic combination. I'd be afraid that the mic could get hung up if you were running and gunning and possibly break the mic and/or the adapter shoe. A shorter version that has a lower profile would be ideal.

The Sony HDR-PJ580 does not come with a shoe adapter and the Pearstone adapter is easy to put on with one hand in a pinch, while fastening tight against the active accessory shoe. I swap out camera lights and wireless mic receivers quite a lot and this seems to stay secure and firm. The price is fare and I will be buying an extra one to keep in my bag of tricks.
