The Singh-Ray 4-Stop (1.2) George Lepp Solid Neutral Density Filter has many uses. It enables the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film.
For the outdoor photographer, a neutral density filter opens up tremendous possibilities. A serene stream in the backwoods can be "blurred" to give it the appearance of motion. And the same is true of birds in flight, cars rushing by or even leaves falling from trees.
Neutral density filters permit you to control your depth of field by using a wider aperture. This helps to separate your subject from the background. If you are a confirmed traditional film shooter, an ND filter permits you to use fast film under bright light, such as on a beach.
Determining which neutral density filter yields ideal results for any given lighting situation takes knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters. Speaking generally, the 2-stop value (ND 0.6) effectively compensates average situations.
