The headset has fantastic audio quality for both parties and works great in noisy environments. The tradeoff for these qualities is ungainly appearance and a little discomfort.

I have used numerous headsets and they all provide mediocre audio to the party on the other end of the call. The etyblu is the only unit that I've encountered where no one has complained about background noise or clarity. In fact, no one has discerned that I'm using a headset with the etyblu.

The in ear design takes some getting used to and the controls are inconvenient and poorly executed. The primary function button requires so much force that I have to hold on to the unit to press the button. A capacitance touch switch would have been a much better choice. Volume resets to a preset level every time the unit is turned off which requires adjusting it every time the unit is turned on: A needless pain in the butt.

All things considered, the etyblu is the best headset I've ever tried, but with a few minor improvements it could be even better.

There's no question about the outgoing and incoming sound quality of the Etyblu 2 earpiece. Sound quality is excellent and what you would expect from Etymotic. That said, there are several design features that I have problems with.

    1. The ear clip they give you to mount the Etyblu on your ear is not very good and sort of cheap. It's merely a thin, curved piece of metal with a rubber sleeve on the portion that goes behind your ear. The exposed tip of the metal should be filed down because it's sharp and can scratch your neck if you're not careful. It also does not give you a snug fit and needs constant adjusting. Plus, it's not a bendable piece of metal so you can't tweak it a little to customize it for your ear size. Honestly, I think they could do far better here if they tried.

    2. The Silver on-off/main control button is poorly placed on the outside of the unit. You must press it in for its functions and that makes you push the unit into your ear. It requires a firm push and therefore, it can be irritating and sometimes painful jamming the earpiece into your ear canal.
My suggestion to engineering is to make the volume buttons a skosh smaller and move the main function button just below them on the same outside edge. This will eliminate pressing the unit uncomfortably into your ear to use the function button. As with the volume buttons, your thumb would steady the unit on one side and your forefinger can press as hard as needed to activate the functions without irritating your ear. This also puts all controls on the same side of the unit for easier fingering.

    3. There is no signal from the earpiece when you turn the unit on or off and that would be a simple and useful addition.

    4. It would be nice if they included some kind of case to store the unit when you're not using it. I've been putting mine in an unused hardshell sunglasses case, which works fine.

I'm very satisfied with the sound quality but not pleased with the ergonomics. If you look at my picture of the unit, I'd put a smaller silver button on the same side as the volume buttons and just below them.

Comments about Etymotic Research etyBLU2 Headset for Bluetooth Wireless Devices:

It pains me to imagine how many different Bluetooth devices I've used, lost or simply wasted money purchasing over the years. This was recommended by a professional audio engineer and I'll never go back to cheap Bluetooth devices again. Background noise is nearly nil. I have great compliments from people I speak with about how good the fidelity is. I also can hear beautifully through the earpiece. It's comfortable to wear and due to the boom mic, is also very adjustable. Definitely a five-star product and worth every penny.

Comments about Etymotic Research etyBLU2 Headset for Bluetooth Wireless Devices:

I use this headset with my iPhone for work calls - sometimes several hours in a day. It is incredibly clear on both ends. Clear enough that most people don't realize I'm using a headset.

The fit can take a bit of getting used to. But once you figure it out, it's quite comfortable. As other reviewers have mentioned, the button for answer calls is difficult to use while wearing the headset. That's a tradeoff worth making for the clear audio though.

Comments about Etymotic Research etyBLU2 Headset for Bluetooth Wireless Devices:

I have owned several bluetooth headsets over the years. This one is among the best. The sound quality is excellent. Be prepared to spend some time finding which of the provided ear tips is right for you. This device is larger than most. When you wear it you'll look like you work in a call center. I'm a radio operator and I'm used to wearing much larger headsets so I wasn't bothered. The biggest negative is the on/off/answer button. Its flush with the body and takes practice to find with your finger. Cool looking but hard to use. It needs some pressure to operate and some practice. The other drawback is that the ear tips are so good at blocking ambient noise that you are deaf in one ear. All that said, its a very good headset. If you main reason for using a headset is serious communication, buy this one. If you want something thats cute or unobtrusive get some thing else.

Comments about Etymotic Research etyBLU2 Headset for Bluetooth Wireless Devices:

Positive: I use this, as a physician, while moving from one exam room to another while on call; I can leave the cell phone plugged into my desk computer up to at least 45 feet away. The noise cancellation is wonderful for noisy surroundings -- callers aren't bothered by conflicting noise. The foam wind protectors work well -- I was able to receive a call and have a conversation while riding bicycle at 20 mph into a 25 mph wind. Negative: all the earpieces hurt my ear canal after awhile -- about 3 hours for the moldable foam -- but with quick recovery. I will get a custom ear plug.Negative: the pressable power/signal switch cover is attached with what looks to be 2 tiny pieces of double-stick tape, and fell off within a week. Back to the mfr for replacement... If it were post-warranty, I'd just use 2 drops of epoxy.

I've used several Bluetooth headsets and this is the best of them. The sound is clear and undistorted. Callers tell me that they hear me clearly from their end as well. Battery life is excellent and the controls are simple to operate. I'm using this headset with an iPhone 4s and it works perfectly. Highly recommended.
