I'm a videojournalist. I've used the old Rode shotgun mic on DSLR shooting before (I shoot with a 5D Mk II).

    Here's what's good:
    - You can bump the preamp to +20 which helps you not have to crank in the in-camera audio, which is low-quality.
    - You can use a high-pass filter if you're handholding with a lens that has IS turned on (24-105, for example) because otherwise you'd hear this horrible background sound. So it takes care of that really well.
    - I set the camera on auto-levels with this and it does just fine.
    - It's compact and wayyy smaller.

    Here's what's bad:
    - The little rubber bands that suspend the shotgun mic come off a LOT. They were falling off a few minutes right after I got it. That's annoying.
    - I just wish it was sturdier. I don't feel like I can throw it in my bag and high-tail it out of there; I've got to make sure that it's the last thing in, placed on top, and it won't be rubbing off anything when I pull it out of the bag otherwise it's going to have the bands snap off.
    - I might have to gaff tape the bands on, but I don't know how well that will work + it's just obnoxious.

So overall, good microphone, and I don't know if I'd want the huge megaprofile of the older version or the newer one coming out (VideoMicPro HD). It's discreet which is a HUGE plus of using a DSLR to shoot video. But you just gotta noodle with it from time to time to fix those dern-tootin' rubber bands!!!

Yes, this is a great microphone once you figure it out, especially the trick in getting the battery cover off and snapping it back on. What's worse, is the battery cover isn't attached by a small strap to the body of the electronics compartment of the mic. It's only a matter of (short) time that I'm struggling with removing or replacing the battery cover that it will fall and I'll lose it. Once you lose the battery compartment cover, that's it. The battery won't stay in its place, no contact, no power, no mic. Dead duck. This is a deal-killer for me.No matter how good the mic is, if you're on a shoot and somehow you lose the battery cover, you have no mic, and for most of us, that means no sound, or really bad sound. If you're shooting mission critical assignments, like a wedding, and you rely on this mic, you're in a world of hurt if you drop the battery cover and can't find it, such as under a table in the reception, or similar situation. If that weren't enough, the little rubber bands holding the mic body to the mounting bracket are very loose, and come off almost regularly as you try to fiddle with the body to change the battery. It's really poor design, and Rode should have figured out this is not a sustainable design for reliable field use. I ended up glueing the rubber bands to the body so they didn't keep coming off. You put one side on, and other side comes off. Geez, what a pain.If you plan to use the mic where a mixer is involved, as do I, you'll need an extension cable or two, because the short cord from the mic is long enough to reach the camera only if it's mounted on the hot shoe directly above the camera. If you plan to use an "L" bracket, you'll need an extension cable to reach the camera input jack. The cord is NOT coiled, which would have been nice. It just hangs there. The switches on the back of the body give good control over mic functions, but they're really small, and tight to operate, so you'll jiggle the mic quite a bit when you engage the switches. Sometimes, you'll go all the way to the right when you're trying to get to the center position, so more fiddling is involved. These might seem petty, but when you're under pressure to get the right shot, the last thing you need is to wonder if the rubber bands are loose on the suspension, or having to change the battery in mid-shoot, then losing the battery cover on the floor, and looking around for it. Heaven help us if we lose the battery cover in a dark room or outside on grass, or other equally distasterous situation.[...] So far, there is no fix for this in the pipeline that I know of, and there's no provision for purchasing extra battery covers. I'll update this review if I find out anything to the contrary. In the mean time, just keep in mind that if you lose the battery cover, you're a dead duck. If you want to take that chance, I'll sell you mine at a discount!Hope this helps.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:

This thing makes my DSLR's on-board mic look like an idiot. I've used it on the shoe. I've used it on a boom. It's lightweight, it's easy to use, and it even sounds good. If I had to say anything negative about it, I would say the battery door could be more robust.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:

You'll get great sound out of this mic– no complaints there. But as is, it's practically unusable for field work, unless your camera is going to be sitting on a tripod, and the shotgun is backup audio for talking heads.

Although in images it appears to be one piece, the mic itself is actually strapped to the plastic base with a bizarrely designed set of proprietary rubber straps.

They're a pain to set in place (sometimes takes 2 minutes to get them stable) and easily pop back out– an annoying time headache to reattach, and reshoot (if even possible) because the mic movement probably caused rubbing noise.

I'm going to see what I can rig up in place of these stupid straps. For now I would not recommend this mic, despite the great audio. There's a million things to worry about in video– predictable gear headaches should not be one of them.

This thing is great. Best in-camera audio for DSLR by far. Definitely better than my Sennheiser MKE 400.

Also, couple this with an external recorder (like the h1) and you have very high quality audio, with much higher range than DSLR audio.

And if you are recording outside get a deadcat, its well worth it!

The two main reasons I went with the VideoMic Pro over something like the comparable Sennheiser were 1.) Replaceable shock mounts. 2.) Better lows than comparably sized mics. So far the Rode hasn't disappointed. Battery life is great, the always on indicator light is reassuring.

This microphone is great for what it's purpose is; get started into audio the right way. The +20db boost is the sole reason I chose the pro over the video mic, and the high pass filter works, but can make the audio sound hollow and fake. I would recommend to turn down the pre-amp on your camera, I use +2 on Nikon, and I am unsure what the best for Canon is, and switch the +20db boost on. The battery life is a bonus as well, we have not had to change the battery once. DidWe use this microphone primarily when mounted on a boom pole for interviews.

I picked this up to improve onboard sound for my DSLR. Nothing fancy- it just lets me get much cleaner, buzz-free audio for my t3i. The +20 dB gain and low pass filter make this a worthwhile tool for amateur videographers.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:

I bought this to improve the audio quality for my company's corporate sales and training videos. Right out of the box, it transforms the audio quality completely from that supplied by the onboard microphone. Some experimentation with the levels (-10db etc.) to suit the audio source and the shooting environment will produce even better results.I think it would be nice to include an extension cable to allow the microphone to be mounted away from the camera. Also, be aware that the bracket on the base of the microphone is not completely compatible with all cameras. Trying to mount it on one of my cameras is a difficult process requiring care to avoid damage both mounting and removing. It is fine on my video capable SLR, but on my camcorder less good. All in all though, very glad I bought this product. Works well!

The VideoMic Pro is a great shotgun mic. The difference between the VideoMic Pro and the internal camera mic are very noticeable. The audio quality is great and greatly better than any internal mic a camera might have. The High-Pass filter is great at eliminating on-board camera background noises like low-frequency humm. The +20dB is a great addition. Overal very satisfied with the sound quality I've been getting compared to on-board camera mic.The one downside that I'm not a fan of is the battery door. Installing or changing the battery feels like it's harder than it should be. I know I'm not the only one commenting on the battery door. But you're more than likely to only change the battery once in a while as it provides about 72hrs of battery life with a fresh battery.

I used it for the first time at a recital and, although I was not in the most optimum location. . .the mic picked up the singer beautifully. Important note: turn down your camera audio setting to the low side (about 4) and with the +20db setting turned on the Rode VideoMicPro provides crisp, professional sounding audio. . love it so far.

After a lot of research, I have decided that the rode videomic pro is one of the better options for microphones for me. A small, light weight mic is exactly what I needed, for imploring a minimalist approach. I prefer just to shot with my gh3, so rather than requiring an external recorder like my h4n, I can plug this into my camera for a portable effect.
