I shoot sports for a small-market network affiliate TV station, and I live about 40 miles from the station. I found it a pain to have to drive to the station to pick up a camera, then go to the games, so I bought one of these cameras to see if the image quality would be good enough to suit the sports director.
It's not a 3CCD camera, doesn't have XLF microphone inputs, and will probably fly to bits the first time a basketball whacks it, but the image quality is just fine for broadcast TV, and (don't laugh but this is actually important to getting into ball game and onto the sidelines or floor without hassles) it looks professional.
This review is for Sports photography only. No idea about how this camera works for things like weddings and events, I don't shoot those. I am not going to talk about stuff the camera doesn't have, if you have gotten this far you already know what features and specs it has. This review is about how what it DOES have works.
Pros: Light weight
Excellent picture quality, even at night football games with bad lighting
Good sound with the included microphone
EXCELLENT battery life (I did get the bigger battery but the one that comes with it will last longer than any ball game or two ball games I am shooting)
Standard AVCHD editing (I and the station both use Edius)
Seamless still shooting (can shoot a cover shot for the web presentation)
Fantastic Image Stabilization... surprisingly excellent for this price level.
Very smooth zooming, quick manual focus.
Shoot stills while recording. Useless for shooting action shots, but great for shooting covering shots and a higher resolution.
Cons:
The tiny eye viewfinder is BARELY adequate, and I mean BARELY. This price range camera should have something bigger and better.
Build... entirely plastic
Loses focus in low light really badly... QB throws the ball, if you try to track the ball it will lose focus unless it's high noon. Works OK in basketball because the gym wall behind give it some perspective
Vignetting occurs on the widest end if you use a protective filter (which sports shooters need to do to protect from flying sweat)
No camera-specific raingear
Wish it were about 2 inches longer in the back, would balance on my shoulder better.
BARELY adequate zoom range. For basketball, volleyball, anything indoors no problem. Football and soccer, however, see you spend a lot of time at the extreme end of the zoom range, even when you are standing on the sidelines shooting. If you want to shoot from the stands and zoom tight, this isn't the camera for you. Sidelines? It works OK.
-----------
Conclusion: The camera is barely adequate for what I am using it for, but I am going to be replacing it with something more appropriate. Honestly, if I were just using this for events, I would be thrilled with it for the price, but it really isn't made for doing with it what I am doing with it.

I bought 2 Sony HVR-HD1000U cameras which use miniDV tapes. These cameras work great and I have no complaints. I decided to purchase the Sony HXRMC2000U camera because I thought the main difference was that the Sony HXRMC2000U uses SDHC cards opposed to miniDV tapes. There are a lot of differences. The difference I don't understand is that with the HD1000U you can control the levels of your audio. You can see the levels on the screen. With the MC2000U you have absolutely no control except for 2 automatic settings. For me the MC2000U works very similar to my digital camera. It does have a clean, crisp picture for the most part and is quite good in low lighting. Seems that I have less manual control then I had with the HD1000U. The intelligent auto mode does produce good footage and you can focus specifically on faces and touch the screen on the person who is talking to focus more on them. Just wish I had more control.
I use these cameras to film TV reality shows, weddings, live concerts and special events. While neither has a XLR input that was easy to fix with the HD1000U as I simply bought and attached Beachtek XLR adapters. I tried using the Beachtek with the MC2000U and because I have no control on the audio levels the audio came out pretty bad.
You would think with the two cameras almost looking identical that they would have almost all identical features. I am disappointed to find out this is not the case. The MC2000U is basically a digital camera I could have spent $300 on and put in a larger, plastic shell. I bought the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ47K at the same time and there isn't much difference between the two cameras when it comes to video. They basically have the same settings and features and produce the same quality.
I will not be purchasing another MC2000U. This camera is fine for people that want to film their vacation or family moments but I would not use it on a professional level.

I use this product as my main camera in all things from studio productions to shoulder mounted live footage, and i have to say this camera has surpassed all my expectations. When i got it it felt very plastic and fragile, but i was wrong. This camera has survived being dropped 12 feet off a crane, being kicked and knocked over, it also survived with no problem after being hit by a wave while filming by a lake. It has also survived being hit by debree from an air cannon at about 100 psi. This camera has far surpassed my expectations and i would definitely suggest it to a friend.

Is a good camera, but I agree with others who have said that the only thing that the difference in digital cameras is the plastic case. Could only be small for the possibilities offered. I think you pay a lot of money but you can find cameras with the same quality for less than half the price. Just look for the size is that it is a camera for professional use, but heavy enough to get tired soon, adding to that the umbalance between the camera body and shoulder support

Using the camera for a documentary about the history of nursing - really like the simplicity and ease of use. I am a first time film maker and have been delighted about how easy the camera is to use. THe only drawback I can see is that I wish that there was more than one hookup for microphone use. I have two shotgun mics and would love to be able to hook both up. Other than that I, I really like the camera.

I've only had this for about a month, but so far I'm pleased. Probably not the only camera you should have for pro use, but it does the job pretty darned well.
