    I decided to
try this mic because of it's incrdably low price and because it had no reviews posted. My logic was that if it was junk I wasn't out much; to my shock and awe the first time I used this mic I couldn't beleive it's performace for the cost. This mic performs as well as those costing ten times as much. My first project with this mic was an indie short and it exceeded my expectations and needs. To start with it has very solid construction, metal case, recessed solid feel switch, and 3 pin XLR out. All of which are trademarks of a superior product. When I heard the sound in post my thought was that this mic does for sound what HD does for optics.

The SGM-12 is a relatively heavy mic, and it uses a AA 1.5VDC battery, so it does add a little weight to the already heavy HMC 70 (especially if you add a wide angle lens and light). The switch allows you to choose between cardiod and super-cardiod, and I have not yet discovered it's range limitation.

It does reject 80-90% of off axis sounds. For instance it will pick up the sound of an F-16 at low altitude overhead, but so will anything. The SGM-12 is a shotgun mic and so no, it's not really versitile in that it will not do the job for every mic on the set. It does it's job and it does it very well.

Comments about Nady SGM-12 Shotgun Electret Condenser Microphone:

For such a low price, I am impressed with how well this mic captures sound from a distance (in supercardioid mode). The audio quality isn't that great, but you can fix/improve it in post. I think this one sounds better than the Audio-Technica ATR6550, and it's almost half the price. I'd say this is a good, cheap solution for filming on the go with a low budget. I would've given it 5 stars, but a screw came loose within 20 minutes of messing with it. That being said, this mic was not built that well in my opinion. I ended up placing the threaded screw back in, and holding it in with electrical tape.

I use this mike when recording plays and concerts it picks up sound from the stage very well and is not noisy like many other cheaper mikes. It is a little heavy and at times does not stay on mount.

Comments about Nady SGM-12 Shotgun Electret Condenser Microphone:

I purchased this microphone to use in a short film, and it has worked out great so far. We mounted it in a homemade boom pole and the audio was fantastic. Even with an air conditioning unit right behind it, it picked up conversation perfectly. After some experimentation we determined that holding the boom still gave the best results as turning the microphone to each speaker in turn gave it a dubbed quality. For the price, this microphone was certainly worth it. I may have even dropped it down the stairs (in the case) and it is still crystal clear.

Amazingly cheap, but I still got decent sound after a 3 day shoot and it still works. Still some light static with the sound, but with no time for production and even less of a budget, it filled the bill and got passable sound.

The first time i used the mic it never worked and i nerver got any sound out of it. There was a shicking hum on the line and there was no level what so ever...

it is back in the box where it belongs.... honestly i would have had more use by giving the money to someone needy

I bought this as a last second thing and was on a budget. It works okay. I would've liked if it fit in the shoe on the DSLR camera. The mic itself didn't even come with the necessary cable to connect it to the 3.5mm jack. So that was an additional 20bucks to get the cable. But if you're on a budget and need to do some quick interviewing this is the mic to use.

I recently bought a Panasonic AG-AC7 Camera for my Video Production Business. The video quality was amazing but the sound was lacking slightly. I tried a powered external mic, but the quality was still lacking . then I added a DXA-2T adapter for XLR and the SGM-12 Shotgun Electret Condenser Microphone. The Sound quality is amazing ... i have covered live shows and events . i could not ask for better sound

I bought this to see if a $ shotgun mic was better than the onboard mic and if it was up to par to even use. I was surprised by the results, you would think it's junk but it's not bad. I like it more than the audio technica mic that's $ it's the atr something. you don't need an amplifier for it cause the mic picks up and is pretty loud on the super cardioid mode. regular cardioid is perfect for close up situations. all in all if you have a small budget and want and external mic I'd suggest getting it, keep in mind you also need an xlr to 3.5mm so it works with your mic jack on the camera and a shock mount and maybe a cold shoe adapter if you need it.

When I was looking for a good starter mic, I was aware that it was probably going to burn a huge hole in my wallet. To my surprise, I found this for just under [$]. I was sceptical at first, but after the extremely quick 2 day ship to way up here in Canada, I was really pleased with the performance I got out of it!I first tried the Super-cardioid setting, I was impressed by the level of background noise suppression. I had read that a few users had some problems with the cardioid setting, but when I tried it, it was like magic! I was even running a fan in the background and it did a pretty good job of completely removing the unwanted noise. The sound could be a little crisper, but for the [$] you're paying, it does its job and way more!! I would recommend this to any starter or average joe filmmaker with a low budget.

At first I used this mic plugged directly into my GH1 with an XLR to 2.5mm adapter cable (which was pretty expensive!) but the audio I got from that setup was terrible. It had a ton of fuzz and background noise and was totally unusable. It must have had something to do with the automatic leveling that the GH1 adds to the audio because when I connected this mic to my Tascam DR-40 it worked fine and I now use this mic for musical instruments in live bands as well as using it for wedding videography. It performs very well for the price. I bought this because I don't have a very large budget for audio equipment and it upped the sound quality in my wedding videos immensely. If you can afford spending another $100 on something better go ahead but otherwise this mic does great.

For the money, I think this mic is not bad. The super setting does introduce noise, but adjusting the level with the beachtek I use seems to help quite a bit. I think it is well built (better than I thought it would be). Overall it works fine for my uses and would recommend it to others.

For the money, this is a great shotgun. You have to keep your levels down on your camcorder (I use setting 50 out of 100) because if you push the input level too high, it will show off the shortcomings of the microphone (bottom will start to hum and the high end will start to crackle).

However, if you learn how to use this mic in the "cardiod" setting, you can get near CNN quality location sound.

Comments about Nady SGM-12 Shotgun Electret Condenser Microphone:

For the price, it's a very good deal. The shotgun is a nice black, and has a vinyl case that you wouldn't expect for a shotgun mic at the low end.

I found the xlr plug very tight to plug in (a little too tight) so I'm hoping it will loosen up a bit over time.

The shotgun has 3 positions: OFF, CARDIOD, and SUPERCARDIOD. Cardiod seems to be the best setting if your recording people up to about 15 feet away from the mike. Supercardiod is very sensitive, probably best suited for picking off bird sounds at 30 yards.

You have to set levels when using this mic. I set my camcorder to volume level 50 for the cardiod (out of 100) and 25 for supercardiod.

If the input is coming in too hot, it tends to accentuate the low end to the point that your audio wouldn't be all that usable. However, if you set the input levels the audio is probably a little better than you'd expect for a shotgun at this price range.

My guess is that if your a pro or semi-pro, or plan to use a shotgun often, then you'd probably be better off stepping up to a better shotgun mic.

However, if your use is quite occassional, or your trying to get some "in close" sound on a budget, and know how to set your levels, then your certainly going to do fine with this mic.
