I purchased this tripod because my other tripod could not hold my d7000 with a battery grip and 24-70 attached, this tripod is built to be very sturdy and as you would expect it is slightly heavy because of this. This head that comes with the tripod is excellent, it pans very smooth and locks up very tight, also one piece of the 3 way head seems to be spring loaded (the pivot you use if you want to lock your camera in portait as apposed to landscape) i noticed this when i unmounted my camera and loosened the lock i had on it and it simply bounced into landscape, this actually is rather pleasant because when a camera is attached ( at least one with decent weight) it does not bounce back only once the camera is removed does it bounce back into place making storage very easy and fast. The lock for attaching the camera to the tripod is excellent very firm grip and when released stays open so all you need to do if lightly press your camera into the mount and it locks it it place for you.

The reason i gave this a 4 star rating as opposed to a 5 is that the legs whilst being very sturdy can be moved almost too easily, for example if you have your camera on the tripod and you lift the tripod to recompose your shot you will notice that the legs under their own weight will some times move inwards, this isn't that bad it is just that if you don't notice it and dont fix the leg when you set it down the leg that moved will hit the ground first then the whole tripod pivots on the one legs joint caused the other legs to hit the ground harder then you would want them to which then gives your gear a nice hard shake, which i do not like very much, though it is a menial issue i feel it was worth mentioning.

But by all means this is the best and most solid tripod I have ever owned and using it is fantastic. i included a picture of the tripod holding my camera as to show its size in comparison and a picture of the tripod mount for your camera sorry for the bad quality since i took a picture of my dslr i used a nikon l120 for the pictures also there was not a way

Also a side note if you want to pan smoother with this head i would suggest removing the the handle that controls vertical adjustment and attach a longer handle which will then once you loosen the other handles to allow movement create a smoother pivot point for you to use as seen in bottom left of picture #2 (grey handle only a portion is in the shot)

Comments about Manfrotto 294 Aluminum Tripod with 804RC2 3-Way Head:

Just started using my new Manfrotto 294 with 3-way head. Love the product. Rugged, high quality, easy to use, reasonably light. The only downside is the height adjustment requires all the legs extended or the center post extended. Both and this thing is super tall!

I use this set of tripod legs constantly with a separate 504 fluid head. I do not use the head that shipped with this product, though it is of good construction and seems pretty functional. I just prefer the fluid head.

Comments about Manfrotto 294 Aluminum Tripod with 804RC2 3-Way Head:

The last time I was up on Cadillac Mountain at midnight shooting the Milky Way, the constant breeze was shaking the camera on my Slik U9000 tripod. When I got home and put the images on the monitor, stationary lights showed movement even with my hanging on to one of the handles during the 25 sec. exposure.I have been using the Slik constantly for over ten years now. Excellent lightweight tripod but it was time to move up to a more professional model. The Manfrotto 294 with the 3-way head was my eventual choice. Its three legs have a 45" spread foot to foot to foot in the normal set-up. I can stand between two legs getting my face right up to the camera without contacting the tripod itself. The three legs can be spread out further to get the camera closer to the ground and to create a wider more stable footprint and a lower center of gravity should conditions warrant. The center post is reversible by removing the rubber cup from the bottom of the post and simply lifting the whole assembly out of the base and reinserting it upwards from underneath the leg assembly. The top of the leg assembly, with the center post down all the way is at 55" (chest high for me). The center post extended all the way is at 71" with my D600 viewfinder up in the sky at 75". Great for overhead crowd shots. The 3 adjustment knobs are large with good grippy rubber handles. A spirit bubble level is inset into the base plate next to the quick release camera plate. Removing the plate is accomplished with your index finger and thumb working the safety catch and release lever in unison. The plate seats back into place exerting light downward pressure on the safety catch. The release lever is spring loaded and snaps back locking the plate into position. The plate only fits one way. It is not omni-directional like the plate on my Slik.Rotation on the three axis's is smooth. Tilt can be a wee bit jerky if you are trying to accurately position a single AF point on a specific spot. With experimentation, you will find that you can set up the camera in any orientation.I am seriously considering the 498 ball head to compliment the 3-way head. They both share the same quick-release plate. The quick release plate screw head has a swivel wire knob attached on the underside of the plate. You can tighten the plate to the camera just using your fingers. No coin or screw driver needed.Per a marketing tag hanging on the tripod, the legs are made of a proprietary polymer material Manfrotto calls Adapto. By all appearances it is aluminum but it is supposed to be 50% lighter. Manfrotto also claims that this material exhibits vibration dampening characteristics. The top 7" of two legs are sheathed in a sleeve of dense foam. Great for gripping it while moving and positioning and for cushioning your neck when you throw it on your shoulder moving from one spot to the next. All metal parts of the head are cast and exhibit excellent craftsmanship. No plastic wear surfaces to wear out. Very elegant design but what else would you expect from Italy?Even with the new polymer material, it is still a substantial piece of hardware. But that is what I was going to need to solve my issues. If it is even close to carbon fiber in performance, you can't beat the value this represents.I purchased mine from B&H Photo for $[$]with free expedited shipping. Ordered it on a Tuesday and received it on Thursday. Brand new in the original Manfrotto retail box with all the parts and instructions.Preliminary shooting out to camp is encouraging. Can't wait to get back out into the field.

Comments about Manfrotto 294 Aluminum Tripod with 804RC2 3-Way Head:

This little compact tripod kills my excuse of not wanting to lug my much heavier one around for my Mamiya 7. It's lightweight enough to tote around but not at the expense of a nice three-way head or leg extensions. I also really like the flippable center column although the little rubber piece that seems to be it's stopper will probably be lost or broken quickly.

Comments about Manfrotto 294 Aluminum Tripod with 804RC2 3-Way Head:

When considering the purchase of this tripod, I wasn't sure if it was going to perform good enough compared to more expensive tripods. Fast forward to now and I can say it's an absolute beauty in all regards. I use it for portraits and could not be happier. Very, very solid performer. I would not recommend it if your line of work is video, but for stills it's solid.

The Tripod is sturdy, well constructed. It is not a tripod that I would take on a long hike, it is a little heavy. It easily adjusts with many different angles, the 3-way head, locks securely and tightly. For the price, it was the best option out there for me, with the quality and construction you expect from Manfrotto, superb! I would recommend this tripod definitely.

Light and easy to use. Expanding & collapsing the legs is quick and easy. I was looking for a tall tripod and this fits the bill. The quick release locks in an open position so when you're ready to place the camera back on, its snaps shut and is locked and secure. Many angles are possible with the three way head. The short handles are nice and don't hinder movement around the tripod. Just make sure they are really tight. I've had it where I thought the handles were tight enough only to notice the camera had moved.

This is my first "modern" tripod having used a 40 year old antique. Adjustments are easy to make and, even fully extended, is still rock solid. I am over 6' tall and this tripod works well for me.

First things first stop reading this review and go buy this tripod :D, Seriously though this tripod is such a bargain for your buck every photographer should own one. It really is pro grade construction and quality and if you are looking for a really heavy duty Tripod thats built insanely well you have found your item. I received the tripod last night and instantly attached my D90 (With battery grip) and a 500mm telelens and this tripod had absolutely no wobbliness like my old tripod once the heads were locked in the tripod and head didn't budge a bit. The tripod is taller then me (6'4) which is amazing for me and the entire build quality of the product is stunning I am thoroughly impressed with my purchase and would highly recommend the tripod for anyone looking for a heavy duty tripod to add to their gear.
