I had purchased an inexpensive tripod before I bought my Nikon D5100 and I soon discovered that this inexpensive tripod could not support the weight of the D5100 that well, especially when I used my 55-300mm lens. I decided it was time to upgrade to a tripod that could support my camera. I spent several weeks researching multiple brands of tripods, trying to make a decision of what to buy. Just when I was getting discouraged because I just couldn't find the tripod that I was interested in, I decided to look one last time on B&H for a tripod. And low and behold, I stumbled upon this tripod and realized it was the tripod that I had in mind that I wanted. And it was in my price range. The reviews I read also convinced me that it was the one to get.I've used it for a couple of weeks now and I rather like it a lot. It is a very stable tripod. My camera does not move at all, even when I use my 55-300mm lens; because when I used my previous tripod, the weight of the camera would cause the head to start tilting downwards no matter how tight I had knobs tightened. Also, n my previous tripod it had a pan/tilt head on it and I despised it. This tripod came with a ball head and now that I've used the ball head, I don't think I will ever go back to a pan/tilt head. Since the head is removable on this tripod, I could get a pan/tilt in the future if I wanted to. I also like how I can take the center column out and the put it back in the tripod upside down so I can take a close-up picture of something that's low to the ground, like a flower for example. The tripod is a bit heavier than I expected, but that is something I won't mind at all while on a hiking trip, because it is nice to have a stable tripod for that perfect picture.

I specialize in travel photography, but I can no longer handle the grip head or the weight of my Gitzo Traveler. So I have been shopping for a replacement that will fit in my carry-on while meeting professional requirements. Low weight, small size, stability under normal shooting conditions, and camera security top my must-have list. I also like flip-locks on the leg extensions, which are easier to find in the less expensive range. This tripod ticked all the boxes on paper, and the price was great, so I thought I'd give it a try.

First test: would it securely hold my Canon 5D Mark II plus a heavy lens (total weight less than 4 pounds) without slowly sinking. It passed this test nicely, holding steady at a 45-degree angle for more than 24 hours.

Second test: its "quiver" quotient -- stability/vibration from assorted sources such as use of the on-camera shutter button versus cable release, the effect of a light breeze or touch on the hanging camera strap, and so on -- all normal things that can come into play during a shoot.

Using a black and white grid/text taped flat to a wall, I did a test shoot at assorted f-stops and speeds, first using just the cable release and then the shutter button on the camera. I also did several shots in which I very lightly touched the camera strap or a tripod leg.

Several of the cable release shots were tack-sharp, but the others were not. Even modest floor vibration from moving around the tripod during shutter activation seemed to affect sharpness.

So it's back to the hunt. I am returning this tripod and moving up into the lower cost carbon fiber offerings.

      Rock Solid Platform

      By Thomas2191

Comments about Manfrotto 293 Aluminum Tripod with Quick Release Ball Head:

I was looking for a stable tripod that was not too heavy to carry. The Manfrotto 293 is just that. With the legs fully extended this tripod is rock solid. The legs can be set at two angles depending on the height you need. It is quick and easy to set up. The ball head is equally easy to adjust and use. It comes with a quick attach plate that snaps into place with precision. The only thing missing from this great tripod is a built in level, which frankly I would not use in most circumstances. I like the durable feel to this tripod and highly recommend it, if you want a light weight tripod for everyday use.

Great for the price, great overall

Comments about Manfrotto 293 Aluminum Tripod with Quick Release Ball Head:

Love the tripod so far. Quick shoe release is a must and it is so handy as both components are included. Ball head tension adjustment is nice to have for different shooting situation and head movement is smooth. It's not carbon fiber so you notice the weight difference but that is expected for the price point. If you aren't counting pounds for your camera gear, this tripod is amazing and of course, high quality. Good buy.

Comments about Manfrotto 293 Aluminum Tripod with Quick Release Ball Head:

I use this tripod with a Canon 7D and a 150-500 lens. It supports it well with very good stability. I love the small fold down size and the fact that it extends to my height without using the column. The quick release and ball head are a must as I primarily shoot wildlife and need to set up quickly. Very pleased with the purchase.

I use this tripod with my Canon T5 rebel with the 75-300 telephoto lens and once I lock it in it does not move. I like the ball head because it gives me a full range of motion without having to adjust two separate handles like my old tripod. With the adjustable tension I can set it to where I can move the camera with a smooth fluid motion so as not to frighten any birds or wildlife.

I really love this tripod! It works excellent with my Canon EOS 2Ti and is very sturdy and well built. I wanted a tripod without too many knobs, levers and buttons so that I can quickly adjust the position of my camera and then focus on getting my shots and this is so easy to use. Just one knob to get the ball head in the perfect position and I'm ready to go. I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for an affordable but excellent quality tripod.

Bought this little gem for my wife because of its height and lightweight and she absolutely loves it!After receiving it I was amazed at how sturdy and light it actually is. It weighs less than half that of my 055xprob and is a pleasure to carry around. For hiking long trails all day this is by far the most economical and lightweight combo for the money. The small 494 ball head that comes with it is very smooth and holds a pretty heavy load, Nikon D90 with Battery grip and heavy 70-300 lens with no problem at all. We are very pleased with this little combo and B&H service as well, shipping was very fast!

The is my first professional grade Tripod. After being frustrated with cheap @ tripods, I decided to spend some money on something nicer. Overall, it's very solid and more robust than the last tripod I had. The build quality is very good. The ball head is absolutely a dream. I take a lot of product photos and can get the head into any position I need to easily. So much nicer than the last head I was using. My only complaint is there isn't a level built into it. I thought a level was a given on any tripod, so I was disappointed when this didn't include one. Otherwise I would have gave it 5 stars.

I'm a clumsy student that needs to take a bunch of photos on a weekly basis.

It pops up and collapses extremely fast and easy; the camera head attaches/removes very easy.

                            Has a rubberized carrying grip.

Comments about Manfrotto 293 Aluminum Tripod with Quick Release Ball Head:

I picked this up as a lightweight unit for backpacking. So far I am very pleased with the features for the price and weight (which is a type of "price" when it comes to backpacking).

Does this tripod have all the whistles and bells? No. Does it have a more than adequate feature set for a little over 3 lbs? Heck yes.

Cheaper tripods/heads have a grinding or sloppy movement to them. Not so with this one. I am very happy with the smooth movement (not good enough for smooth video/panning - but adjusts easily when composing a still). This is an all around great tripod.

Comments about Manfrotto 293 Aluminum Tripod with Quick Release Ball Head:
