The entry-level Canon FS400 Flash Memory Camcorder is a budget-friendly way to preserve your memories. In addition to being light on your pocketbook, the FS400 features standard def recording, flash memory ease, and user-friendly features. Let's take a quick look at this dynamic little camera.
The FS400 records standard def video using a 1/6" CCD image sensor and Canon's DIGIC DV II Image Processor. Your images will be clear and ready for instant upload to the web thanks to their SD file size. And all those standard def videos will be recorded right to external flash memory- chose from SD/SDHC and SDXC cards for convenient storage and transfer of all your files. The FS400 has a 2.7" LCD for composition and review of all your scenes. Other standard recording features include 41x Advanced zoom and Canon's Dynamic Image Stabilizer. Additional recording options go the extra mile to ensure a painless experience that simplifies video recording. Use options like Advanced Video Snapshot, Quick Start, and Pre-Record to your advantage for memories that will truly last a lifetime. When you're all done shooting, the included Pixela Video Browser software helps you share and edit all that you've shot.In addition to the advantage of added recording time, flash memory offers more to you as well. You'll appreciate its quick response time, because it doesn't have to wait for moving parts. Press the record button and your FS400 starts recording video faster than you've ever seen before. In addition, when you review your footage, it will start playing more quickly as well. Another plus is the FS400's low power consumption rate, allowing your battery to last longer. It's just what you need so you don't miss that pivotal play on the field or the moment when they say "I do"
The FS400 is compatible with the Eye-Fi SD memory card. It's possible to wirelessly transfer your video and photos to your computer, or upload them directly to online sharing sites in a few simple steps. Insert an Eye-Fi SD memory card into the SD card slot on the camcorder, configure your computer to select the target site (e.g., Facebook, YouTube, Shutterfly, Flickr) and you're ready to share your standard definition files with family, friends, and the world!
It's a breeze to upload video from your FS400 to sites such as YouTube, using the supplied simple wizard Pixela Video Browser Software. It's another way to easily bring your FS400-shot footage to the Internet

We bought a number of these so students could use them in the classroom for very simple work... nothing extensive. Nice picture, decent sound for an on-camera mic. But the Canon (as do some other camcorders) records to a .MOD file which was impossible to import into Windows MovieMaker. Went online to search for a solution, and tried changing the .MOD file extension to an .MPG. Still didn't work. I can convert the file running it through another program, but that's another step students have to go through in an already short class period.
Just wish manufacturers (especially in these consumer-grade camcorders) would find a standard and stick with it, whether it be .mpg, .avi, .mov, etc.

The ONLY thing I am not happy with is that these cameras go OUT OF FOCUS every now and then IN auto mode...It happens outside OR inside and for no reason at all. They WILL go out of focus in a room with crazy lighting, so don't expect to have something good. The FS100's are far better than these 4th generations. SO I am now unhappy when using 4 of these and while editing have no shot to use at all...

Well - we just got it and are already using it for exactly what we wanted - taping our synchronized swimming group practice and then, going inside the clubhouse and immediately watching the videos to see exactly how everything looks from the deck. And I was able to shoot these videos and do the playback on a TV the VERY FIRST DAY that I took the camera out. Now I am no "techno geek" and I did read the manual. But to be able to do this job on the first day was really a breeze. We are very, very pleased with the purchase of this camera to record our practices and use for teaching and demo purposes. Additionally - the size and weight of this Camcorder is just amazing and perfect for the size of anyone's hand. Again, what amazing technology it incorporates for the average consumer.

I use this camera to film my baby boy and document how he grows and interacts. It is very portable and very easy to use. We can whip it out and get it recording in a flash which is great for when our baby does spur of the moment things that we want to capture on film. It is so simple to operate. It is also lightweight so we can take it everywhere with us as it fits nicely in the diaper bag. My only complaint is that it is not compatible with an Apple computer. I believe this is Apple's own doing/problems and not the camera's but that would have been a nice heads up before we bought it. We live far from family and we were hoping to share the videos with them, but because of the incompatibility we are having difficulty doing so.

I got this camera from BH about 3 weeks ago and have been having a ton of fun with it. I'm surprised at the quality. Yesterday I hooked it up to my 52" TV and the video was amazing. I appreciate that it has a lot of manual overrides such as exposure compensation. Once you get used to it, it comes in very handy, especially when something is back lit. Generic batteries can be found for under $ and wall chargers for even less. I do admit that it's tough to hold the camera steady when holding it out away from your body. I would prefer an eye level viewfinder like on my DSLR. Focus can be a bit slow at times, but I bought it for birds and other wildlife so am always using it at a pretty high magnification, which makes it a real challenge for hand holding. That's where a monopod or tripod comes in handy. I normally sit on my adirondack chair in my back yard and steady everything on the chair's arm rest. The photo part is pretty lacking, but I have my Canon DSLR's for the serious stuff. You can see some youtube samples from this camcorder by searching for channel for mnshutterbug. I try to keep all my videos less than 60 seconds. These were all done at the medium resolution setting.

This camera is what we have chosen to use for recording our testing process in our lab. We are performing strength and durability tests on automotive parts and take both video and still pictures which are clear and exactly what we need. We actually have purchase 3 of this same model for videoing from different angles during a test. Highly recommend!

I purchased these for my student filmmakers. They are easy to use, hold their charge throughout the day and then some, and have enough features for inquisitive students who want more creative camera features.
One thing that's not so great is that the mic picks up any wind when filming outside. It's not a surprise given that this is a simple consumer camera, but I have to remind my students to consider that when counting on vocal audio outdoors.
I did have one camera glitch on us. The auto focus stopped working and the view finder was constantly blurry. I had purchased the extra warranty, and did send it back; but I think it disappeared into the abyss - I need to track it down. Otherwise, the rest of the cameras have been fine.

i use the fs400 to record appearances at random comedy clubs and venues with inconsistent/ poor lighting situations, usually its a decent job of recording sound, though AWB is not so great w the range of lighting on random stages, its great for getting material recorded to just review and rewrite, for better video quality, it takes a bit more time to finesse and such, but worth it for the price.
i owned the fs200 until the joystick broke.. this updated model no longer has plug to listen on earphones, a key reason i bought the previous model, i cna stick an earphone in, but only halfway to listed in left ear, no way to adjust setting to make it work like the fs200, stil its a decent camera i had the fs200 for 2-3 years til joystick broke -beware, keep it protected at all times, once that goes, its toast, cant get to much other navigation.
i did not want an HD camera since if im shooting basic footage just to review and rewrite jokes/material, did not seem wise to use HD camera to gobble up all the GB on the flash
