The Canon XA10 HD Professional Camcorder is a fully featured, ultra-compact pro video camera that shares nearly all the functionality of the XF100, but in an even smaller, run-and-gun form factor. Sporting a 64GB internal flash drive and two SDXC-compatible card slots, the XA10 can record literally for days without running out of memory. Able to capture AVCHD video at bitrates up to 24Mbps, the camcorder's native 1920 x 1080 CMOS sensor also lets you choose 60i, 24p, PF30, and PF24 frame rates for customizing the look of your footage. Bringing further professional oomph to that footage is a Genuine Canon 10x HD video lens, with lowlight sensitivity and a 35mm equivalent zoom range of 30.4mm-304mm.
Like the larger XF100, the XA10 also provides full image customization, cinema looks, infrared recording (for night shooting), and HDMI/component/composite output. Other professional features include dual XLR inputs, relay recording, waveform, color peaking, and zebra patterns. But the camera has a few extra tricks up its sleeve, including a detachable handle to allow for truly low-profile shooting, and a 3.5" Touch Panel LCD that adds the extremely useful Touch & Track, Touch Focus and Touch Exposure functions, which make pulling focus and adjusting exposure dramatically easier. Combined with its other focus, exposure, and composition aids, this makes the XA10 an ideal blend of portability and professional control--the perfect tool for nearly any on-the-go production.
Monaural: Single point direction Normal (Stereo) Wide: Provides a more enhanced, separated stereo effect than normal Synced with Zoom: Directionality is adjusted to match the zoom position
In addition, the frequency response characteristics of the microphone can be adjusted between low, mid-range and high frequencies.
Normal: Provides a balance throughout all frequencies Low-range emphasis: Excellent for recording live music with impact Attenuate low frequencies: Reduces ambient noise and the sound of traffic outdoors, such as wind, cars, and so on Mid-range emphasis: Ideal for capturing people's voices Low and high range emphasis: Record live music with balanced lows and highs
The Automatic Attenuator feature prevents high volume distortion and optimizes audio quality in situations when sound levels quickly change. It automatically keeps the audio clean and even. Additionally, two XLR audio inputs with phantom power can be found on the detachable handle. Both the built-in microphone terminal and XLR terminals have the option for automatic or manual audio level control. Canon’s new optional WM-V1 Wireless Microphone allows high-quality audio to be recorded from up to 164 feet away (50m), making it ideal for ceremonies.

Since all products are a compromise of some sort (price vs. size vs. weight vs. ruggedness vs ?) the trick when buying a complex product is to determine if the designers made the right compromises, i.e. they gave up features that aren't very important to you and they preserved the features that are.
For me, the Canon XA-10 puts the priorities in all the right places: image quality, manual controls, audio quality, size, weight, price and...did I say image quality? Are there some missing things I wish it included (like more buttons and a larger viewfinder)? Sure, but I'm not willing to pay a higher price and get a larger, heavier camera to get them.
The image quality is superb out of the box, and gets better and better as you learn how to tweak the settings. Sharpness, color saturation and dynamic range are excellent. I used to think only a three-chip camera could deliver video of this quality, especially in low light. Audio quality is excellent with both the built-in mics for ambient sound and with my Rode NTG2 shotgun or a lavaliere for dialog.
I thought I would hate the touch screen. It's not as responsive as my iPhone, but I've gotten used to it. It's bright, clear and the menus are (mostly) logically laid out. Virtually everything can be manually controlled when you want to, and that really makes a difference.
The handle with XLR inputs works well. Mine does have a rattle, but, who shakes a camcorder when shooting? Not me. This problem has been exaggerated, although I agree that Canon should have never let this design or assembly problem happen.
I do have a few small complaints: I wish the headphone jack were not underneath the LCD when closed and I wish the speaker was functional when "headphones" was selected but no headphones were plugged in.
For those of you trying to decide whether to use a DSLR or camcorder for video, here's my take. I've been shooting film and video for almost 40 years, and commercial still photos for just as long. I shoot some video with my pro-level DSLR and pro-level lenses. The ONLY advantage I have found that the DSLR has compared to the XA-10 is limited depth of field. In almost all cases the overall image quality of the XA-10 is superior. Unless you are willing to spend quite a bit on accessories for you DSLR, and have an assistant, and a detailed script and shooting plan, I would choose a camcorder.

I'm using the camera to shoot a documentary. The things that are great about it are, first off, it's size. This is why I purchased the camera, shooting a documentary has gotten more and more difficult these days. If you have a camera that draws attention, many times you'll be shut down. The XA10 can be scaled down to a very small footprint. It puts out an amazing picture, and uses either it's internal hard drive, which at 64gigs is ample, or affordable cards. The ability to plug in high end microphones is a major plus, as is the handle that is removeable...it expands the options of how to hold the camera...and being as small as it is, that handle comes in, well...in handy. I also must say, the price is an attractive part of this camera. For this price point you could put together a TWO CAMERA SHOOT for the price of one. Sure, once you're holding the small nearly comsumer style camera in your hands you feel the price is kind of inflated, and it is, but the picture you get will somewhat mask the pain in the wallet.
The things that are not so great about it...you've read about it in other reviews, all the menu controlled options will have anyone who is running and gunning want to sell this camera and get a larger camera with all the bells and whistles...which is to say BUTTONS. True that the fully automatic settings on this camera are really good...but should you want to go manual, the menu diving is deep and disturning. They would have been a nice OPTION, meaning...I would suggest that perhaps Canon come out with a breakout box option for the camera, that could be plugged into the camera and used when desired with all the buttons needed.
I also wish the focus ring could be repurposed for iris/zoom.
I'm not sure if this is petty, but I wish the sound meter had a RED ZONE. I also wish the sound level controls were easier to adjust.
I also have problems with the RATTLE sound everyone else is complaining about. I heard it may have been fixed in newer cameras, but all I can attest to is the one I have makes a lotta noise. How they let that get to market is TOTALLY INSANE!
Speaking of sound, I'm not sure why CANON has made an already bad problem worse by making you once again menu dive to listen on headphones (and the headphone jack is in a REALLY bad place...was no field testing done on this design?). There is a world of wonder in th menus, but when you're out in the field with your subject fleeting before you...the last thing you want to do is be screwing around in submenus.
I'm rating it 3 stars because of the problems with the RATTLE sound, the major inconvenience with the menus, and what feels like a slightly inflated price for what the camera is. But I will say it puts out a great picture (limited to 4:2:0 and under 25mbs).
If you hear and understand all the caveats, then the camera will serve you well.

I've only had this camera for a couple of weeks but have loved it so far. It has virtually all of the major features of a unit much more expensive and the picture quality is fantastic. I happen to like buttons, switches and knobs as opposed to drilling down through menus, but for the price point of this camera I'll take the menus.

I was skeptical about purchasing this Camcorder because of it size but after using it for a week on vacation in GA I was about to test it out with its multitude of settings. I can tell after countless hours of research and youtube videos it certainly lives up to the hype. I am happy about the picture quality. Low light quality is good but under good lighting or outside is where it shines. great detail and color. It''s small and light enough to go anywhere. Sound quality is superb with the xlr inputs. Stabilization is good but i prefer a smoother look so I use a steadycam for several shots. I bought primarily to do music videos and short films. I will be using it this week for a music video shoot so I will try to give an update. Be prepared to by a few accessories for best use. I bought 2 extended batteries, a tall case( unless you want to constantly remove and reattache the handle), a hoodman lcd cover ( for sunny shots) and of course a good shotgun mic. Lastly, beware of price drops as this has been out a while. The price dropped on mine $70 within 2 weeks. Thankfully B&H's customer service took great care of me and gave me a credit for the difference that I put toward a wide angle lens! Verry Happy

This little camera is great! I purchased it as an upgrade from my XHA1 that I used to film speaker sessions at conferences. It works well in the low light of most conference settings and its size makes my gear bag even more compact. This camera is easy to use and delivers a great image. It's perfect for fast paced documentary filmaking. The infrared setting is outstanding. I think I will do some ghost hunting with it.

24P performance is pretty great given the price tag. XLR ins and Audio control on the handle put this a peg above prosumer in my opinion. Comments about Canon XA10 HD Professional Camcorder:
I'm a freelance videographer and spent quite a while looking for my perfect camera. The Canon XA10 fit my needs & budget and I have to say it is a wonderful camera. Let me just say that the rattle on the buttons is not as bad as everyone says. Yes, the buttons on the handle do rattle around it's a shame that cannon hasn't address that problem. But, after about a week of using it, I don't even notice it anymore. It hasn't affected the quality of my video or audio. I do use an external shotgun mic though, which I would highly recommend for anyone using this camera since the internal audio is NOT professional quality.
PROS:
- stunning low light performance
- dual SD card slots are a major plus
- small enough to be versatile and portable, yet looks professional and delivers high-quality performance
- Infrared is a bonus and gives you the ability to record in complete darkness
CONS:
- Poor location of the headphone jack. You also have to manually switch the playback audio to go through the speakers on the camera or headphones.
- Finding things in the menu takes some getting used to. So, make sure that you practice before going to shoot.
- Shoots in progressive frames, yet when I import into Final Cut, the computer reads the footage as interlaced even though it's not. This is not a major problem, but can be a little irritating at times when trying to do certain things.
Overall, I love my camera and will use it for years to come. If you need a professional camera without being charged through the roof, the Canon XA10 is definitely a good way to go.

Comments about Canon XA10 HD Professional Camcorder:
I have only used this camera a few times, both indoors as well as out doors. In both situations have found the picture color and clarity to be great in comparison to a couple of higher end consumer level cameras that I was using as well.
The best parts about this camera would have to be the functionality it offers in such a small package. However, this could also be a point of frustration, as the majority of the functions are in a digital menu accessed through the touch screen display. If you are like me, it is just a learning curve that everyone with something new must go around. I am a quick learner and one who does not quit or complain if I doesn't come naturally immediately. It is, after having used it more, become quite comfortable and manageable.
