The dedicated Vello ES-62 Lens Hood with Adapter is specifically designed for use with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens. Please click here for a complete compatibility list, and to see a list of available lens hood options.
Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent flare associated with unwanted stray light by shading the front of the lens barrel. A dedicated lens hood is designed to perfectly match the focal length and design specifications of a given lens. In addition, hoods provide extra protection from accidental impact. The bayonet mount is designed to also work in the reversed position, allowing the hood to be placed backwards over the lens for a more compact storage solution.

All these Vello lens hoods are very good. I purchased several for different sized lenses of varying focal lengths and filter sizes and they all fit perfectly on the ends of my lenses when in use and were easily flipped back on the lens when stored in my bag. They all have very solid fits, keep the stray light out, and more to the point, protected my lenses. In one case, a lens of mine did a "face plant" on the ground with the camera body attached because a tripod fell forward and all that cracked was the lens hood. Both camera, lens, filter, and tripod were all okay.

This hood is ok for light use. I am not crazy over the fact that it is snap-on as opposed to screw-on like the one for my zoom. The squeeze buttons on the sides are annoying and hard to coordinate with each other to get the hood to snap on evenly, meaning you one side snaps but not the other, then one pops off as you try to snap on the side that didn't in the first place! Also, the hood is not very sturdy, especially the snapping parts that hold it on, so you need to take care putting it on and off. Luckily the fast lens I bought it for is mostly for low-light applications so I won't need it very much!

I've had this for a few days and don't really like it. Once it snaps on, it works fine. But it is aggravating trying to get it on in the first place. It has a tendency to get stuck and is kind of a pain. I wouldn't recommend it.

I was at the store buying the Canon 50 mm f/1.8 lens and they offered me this hood, it is an overall good hood: is sturdy, the plastic seems resistant and has a nice feeling.
The bad thing is that the little fins seems pretty feeble and easy to crack. Just be extra careful when you are attaching it and you will be fine.

Comments about Vello ES-62 Lens Hood with Adapter:
Seems like it is flimsy, but it does a good job at protecting my Canon 50mm f/1.8 II from getting banged up and does a real good job at keeping lens flares from happening. Very light weight. Can unscrew if you are using a circular polarizer filter so check it every once in a while to make sure it is not unscrewing from the front of the lens.

Comments about Vello ES-62 Lens Hood with Adapter:
This lens hood is a decent starter hood. If you are looking for something sturdy...this isn't for you. The adapter screws onto the end of the lens like a filter and the hood has two grip buttons to attach the hood to the adapter. It is held on by 4 blade type fins that just slide into a groove on the adapter. I've been able to pop it off a few times already just by slightly pulling on it. Feels like those blades can easily break.

Comments about Vello ES-62 Lens Hood with Adapter:
The clips that attach the hood to the adapter are very thin and they always sound like they're going to break when I'm putting it on. It's also difficult to tell if the hood is attached properly--takes a lot of tweaking and testing to be sure it's not on crooked. is If I were to buy another one I'd look for something higher quality.

Comments about Vello ES-62 Lens Hood with Adapter:
Removing/reversing the hood can be a bit of a pain since you have to align the hood's "jaws" into the adapter's slot. Not really a deal, but I would have preferred a simpler one piece hood.

Comments about Vello ES-62 Lens Hood with Adapter:
The lens hood works as designed for the nifty fifty (50mm 1.8), and is reversible. It does require a filter-type adapter which extends the length more than a directly attaching hood would, and the securing mechanism isn't as foolproof as most hoods, requiring more attention and usually two hands. The stock lens cap does work with the included adapter though.
