The dedicated Vello HB-45 Lens Hood is specifically designed for use with Nikon's 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (all versions) Lens. Please click here for a complete compatibility list, and to see a list of available lens hood options.
Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens, by extending and shading the end of the lens. A dedicated lens hood is designed to perfectly match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for. Moreover, this hood features a non-glare matte finish on the interior surface, to further prevent or limit lens flare. And since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact. The bayonet mount is designed to also work in the reversed position, allowing the hood to be placed backwards over the lens for a more compact storage solution.

I always use lens hoods to protect against stray light and even an occasional bump. I like the weight of this one and the ease with which it attaches to the lens. The solid fit adds strength to the unit. I could feel more secure if the hood and lens were both made of metal.

While it seems to work well, I'm a little concerned about taking it off my lens that one day I'll crack it. The material is much softer than other hoods I've owned/ used. While I say I would not recommend this hood to a friend, if it was the only option, then any hood is worth having.

At first I didn't see this lasting long because it felt cheap when putting on and taking off. I have tested it probably over a hundred times now just to see if it would wear prematurely or break and it is still in new condition. Its a go!

This lens hood fit my Nikon 18-55mm lens perfectly and is extremely well made. I had previously purchased (and returned) an inferior lens hood for this lens at a local camera shop that cost me the same as this Vello hood WITH expedited shipping from B&H.
