Whether capturing images in the studio or on location, the Vello FreeWave Wireless Remote Shutter Release adds flexibility and versatility to your shooting style. Photography unplugged - shooters can interact with a model, view the scene or set from alternate angles, or set a camera by a stream to capture an image of a bear hunting while you remain at a safe distance away - all this and more without missing a beat, a shot, or a moment. This particular FreeWave unit is compatible with cameras with a 3-pin connection, i.e. Canon 1D series, 5D, 6D and 7D series DSLRs.

This versatile shutter release features Smart Code technology which allows it to be configured to operate on up to 16 million possible radio channels. You can easily switch channels to "zero in" on a frequency that provides optimal range and functionality.

The FreeWave operates with radio frequency (RF) technology, therefore a direct line of sight is not necessary; radio waves pass through objects such as windows and walls. It is unlike other wireless remotes on the market that operate on an Infrared (IR) system and require a direct line of sight between transmitter and receiver to make things work.

Since touching the camera even lightly while capturing an image can create a blurred image, the FreeWave eliminates this by tripping the shutter without any disturbances. This is critical when photographing subjects close up, and for long-exposures and macros. It is also extremely valuable when photographing nature, wildlife and other subjects that are difficult for you to get close to.

Compatibility
Canon EOS: 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 5D, 5D Mark II, 5D Mark III, 6D, 7D, 7D Mark II, 1D, 1D Mark II, 1D Mark II N, 1D Mark III, 1D Mark IV, 1Ds, 1Ds Mark II, 1Ds Mark III, 1D X and 1D C
Smart Code
The FreeWave's Smart Code feature allows you to operate on 16,000,000 possible radio channels. No DIP switches need to be set, and one transmitter can trigger multiple receivers. The units have been synchronized at the factory, so your system can work right out of the box. However, to maximize signal quality and range, it is best to use the Smart Code technology to sense the "quiet" frequencies in your environment and re-synchronize on that channel.
Extended Range
The FreeWave can fire the camera's shutter from distances up to 320 feet (100 meters).
Multi-function
Trigger your camera wirelessly or wired. Wired triggering even works if the receiver battery is dead or missing.
Dual-Function Release
Press the transmitter's button half way to focus; press it fully to trigger the shutter.
Delayed Release
The two-second delay function gives you extra time to get into position.
Multi-exposure
You can take multiple shots with one press of the trigger.
Long Exposures
With the FreeWave you can control the length of the exposure remotely.
LED Indicators
Two LED indicators confirm pre-focus and exposure when in the wireless mode.
Versatile
The FreeWave includes a camera release cable that works with your particular camera model. By simply changing to another cable (additional purchase required) a single receiver can work with many other cameras as well.

Cables available are:

I bought this about 6 weeks ago and have used it in professional setting and also on leisurely outings. It works perfectly as described and it SO easy to use. It's nice not to be slaved to line-of-sight or tethered to a cable. Autofocus feature is awesome.

In the hustle of a pro session, I bent and almost broke off the antenna of the handset, without even realizing it. Easy to do if you're not paying attention to it. I hit it against my leg and it bent about 30 degrees. If it had broke I'd have been screwed. (shooting portraits on the beach)

The curly cable sometimes gets in the way and has no clear way to handle it... awkward, can mess up shots if it gets in front of the lens, which is easier than it sounds.

Also, when firing 4 or 8 frames a sec. on a Canon 7D in several long bursts the camera keep shooting... like 100 times before it stops. Not cool. Especially on Max Raw with limited memory card space. I had to learn how to handle it shooting that way. Stopped my session had to power off to get it to stop firing.

All-in-all I love it now that I have learned how to be careful with it.

Oh! It's SOOO EASY TO LOSE THE HANDSET. I can't tell you how many times, as with any remote, I have spent 20 minutes trying to remember where I set it down! If you lose it you're completely screwed. (I keep all three components together in a ziplock baggie now so it all goes as 1 thing.)

So Be Careful not to lose the handset, don't brake the antenna, don't shoot too many long bursts, figure out how you will handle securing the cord and this is a GREAT little wireless remote! I love it, now that I have learned what to be careful of. I mean I love it a lot and wouldn't use anything else! It's a GREAT PRODUCT!

The remote works pretty well, but I have encountered a couple of quirky glitches with it. Once it got "stuck" and wouldn't stop activating the shutter. It works great for the most part though, but I would be concerned about using it for anything "mission critical".

Comments about Vello FreeWave Wireless Remote Shutter Release for Canon w/3-Pin Connection:

I've been using it for about a week now, and I have had no issues with setting it up or using it so far! I've mostly been using it for outdoor photography and self-portraits. I'm very new to photography so this is a great tool for my skill level-which means it is very simple to use.

The only minor problem I have come across is when remote is behind me, it does not transmit the signal to the camera very easily. I usually have to move my arm around quite a bit to get it to work. This was definitely a bummer, but not a dealbreaker, I really love this product so far!

I use this for the self-timer and remote for my self portrait work. Works great, but I accidentally ordered one for the wrong model camera, so it wouldn't work with my 5D. However, luckily a gear friend of mine had plenty of these and I was able to trade for the right one-probably just misread the description on here.

I use the product to do self portraits, and use my camera from far away. I think its great how it doesn't need a direct line of sight. However there are a few downsides, sometimes the connection cuts out, but now it seems to not do that anymore so thats great! For the price you pay, you are getting a great product! for long exposures, time lapses and portraits!

This unit performs as promised with an easy-to-use remote control unit with a really far range. My only complaint is that the 3-pin plug didn't fit the camera socket perfectly - I had to use a lot of pressure to seat it properly - I don't know, however, whether that was the fault of the unit or camera. Otherwise, it's a sweet piece of equipment

Comments about Vello FreeWave Wireless Remote Shutter Release for Canon w/3-Pin Connection:

I use this product mostly in the studio but sometimes I shoot outdoors with it. I used it on many shoots off-and-on for about 2 years. Recently, the battery seemed to need replacing because the auto-focus worked but would no longer trigger the shutter. So I replaced both batteries. This did not fix the issue.Thankfully, the receiver has an identical button on it. I removed it from the camerabody with the cord attached and use it like a common (but very expensive) cable release switch. So I wasn't totally blown out of the water. I still had a work-around but I need the remote. However, I am now re-ordering the same item, buying it all over again, to replace the one that went bad. What does that tell you? $ for a couple years of use and I am still buying another? Either I am stupid or I just like it.If I could buy another remote handset only, I would do that, because that is the only part that went bad. I think the antennae is the cause, since I almost broke it off a couple times, on my leg, in the heat of battle during a shoot. Maybe it eventually went bad because of shock. who knows? I leave the antennae in now and it works just fine without being extended. It's a bad design. But I need a new one now so I have to buy it again. I like it when it works. What can I say? I should prolly spend more money on a better model with no antennae but this is cheap and works fine for me. I'll keep the antennae retracted from now on. Cheers!

From the box to the camera without a flaw. With the batteries included this was the simplest set up of any accessory I have purchased for my camera system. On a trial run I set my camera up by a bird feeder and had great success shooting whatever stopped by to feed. A very inexpensive tool to have in your bag.

Works well when wired directly to the camera. Wireless operation is finicky, even at very short distances. Also, it is difficult to feel the halfway shutter depression (to autofocus) and it is easy to accidently fully press the button before it completely focuses. I like that it only takes one battery, even though it is not of the common AA or AAA variety.

This product is a major convenience for me and I'll suppose most users of Capture One. I can shoot and keep my eyes on my monitor without turning around to press my remote shutter release that was hard wired to my camera. This device has a built in antennae, but I don't have to use it within my photo shoot room. A great product at a great price!

Great little helper. While I have not had the chance to test this at the maximum range I do not expect any difficulties. The product works well and is light weight, a bonus in my opinion. I would recommend a lanyard for the trigger as it tends to get lost in the camera bag.

As a style blogger, I rely on a remote for many of my photos. I used an infrared for years with some frustrations, and had been using the Panasonic app with my new GX7. This remote if perfect if you need to be able to shoot from a long distance. Its a little large in comparison to the micro four/thirds build, but light enough it doesn't make it too top heavy. Works wonderfully!

This item is pretty basic and straight forward. It works great and does exactly what you need it to. The only downside to it is I feel like I am going to break it accidentally. The three pin connector doesn't feel very sturdy.

i bought this remote for family shots so I wouldn't have to use the self-timer and run to get into the scene. It works great for that. I have also used it when shooting Christmas lights to avoid using the camera's shutter release which could introduce vibration. It works very well and is easy to set-up & use.

Works great so far. I use it with my Canon 5dmkiii and it works well both inside and out. The most distance from the camera I've used it is about 25 feet with no problems.

Comments about Vello FreeWave Wireless Remote Shutter Release for Canon w/3-Pin Connection:

Much easier than using a flash wireless to trigger my camera. I have struggled for years with other more expense systems but this one is easier to use and less stressful. I haven't tried the unit at any great distances yet. It works fine for what I am using it for and I have used it indoors and outside without any problems.
