I have learned that today's printers are only as good as the printhead. I formerly owned both a simple Canon photo printer as well as the HP B8550 wide format photo printer, both for only two years before the printheads went south. Needing a replacement immediately (cost of repair and new print cartridges simply not worth it) I must admit that I purchased the iX6520 without even taking one for a ride simply due to both the style and incredible price of the product, which gave me wide format print capabilities to boot. As I read previously in one review, this printer definitely has a solid feel right out of the box and a very pleasant look about it. I am not crazy about the bloated software that accompanies this machine (easily just as bad in my opinion as HP's) but the printer itself is proving to be much faster than my former HP and prints quite acceptably for my tastes, although I have not yet had the chance to run it to it's full potential. Unfortunately, it is just as loud as my former HP, although with much less printer preparation activity going on during both power up and "down" time. This printer will still require a second part-time job to cover the cost of replacing the 5 print cartridges, but again, I feel that I can't go wrong considering the sales price. Hopefully this printhead makes it over the two year mark. I would buy this printer again for the specified reasons in a heartbeat.

The quality of print is excellent as long as you are using their predefined paper sizes. But if you need custom paper sizes and borderless printing beware. I got this printer primarily for printing 12"x12" digital scrapbook pages and papers. While I can set a custom page size (12"x12") for "plain paper," I cannot set it for photo paper. Also it will not do true borderless printing on the 12"x12" plain paper. I'm actually using 12x12 white card stock. So I can get fairly good reproductions with only 1/8 to 1/4 inch borders, it's still not quite what I was hoping for. But it's much better than being limited to just letter or legal sizes.

Comments about Canon PIXMA iX6520 Color Inkjet Business Printer:
I am adapting my former review, right below this one, to add the benefit of only a few week's experience. The printer is doing what it should, it was me that was screwing up. I print directly out of Photoshop on a laptop with a USB cable. But for some reason I was allowing the printer's own software to control the attributes of the print job and it was fighting Photoshop. Granted, not all who buy this will have Photoshop, but I find if I turn off ALL of the Canon controls and let PS do all the setup, it prints everything as I intend. This includes all of the extra 'optimizations', turn em all off. Now my prints work out fine. I would also like to add something concerning PAPER. If you are printing snapshots on 4x6 paper or something, this is not so important, but if you are printing to sell prints, to give prints as gifts, or to hang large format art prints on your wall, invest the extra $1.00-$1.50 a sheet and get that Canon Pro Platinum paper. Your jaw will drop. I find what the reviewers say on the actual paper sales page at B-and-H that only when you hold Pro Platinum prints side by side against cheaper paper do you GET the differences. The color rendition and precision of detail and richness of color and gloss is NO CONTEST. If its just general use, fine, use whatever, but if you want to make it COUNT, invest in a bit more paper grade. You already bought a lower end but quality printer in the iX6520....show your smarts and splurge on some good paper.
I sell prints as a sideline, and I figured that my customers were paying for the paper anyway, so I got them the good stuff. Or I did when I re-ordered. Previously, I just bought the cheap stuff wanting to keep the price on the printer, ink and paper as low as possible initially. Not a huge mistake, but a mistake nonetheless.

Comments about Canon PIXMA iX6520 Color Inkjet Business Printer:
The printer does not use ink any faster than I imagined it would. Prints come out darker than you expect, but if you save your print-bound art as a copy and increase the brightness in Photoshop or another program, your results will be what you expect them to be in the first place. The printer is large and powerful, yet very cost effectivee to get the hardware into your home. Ink is Ink, we all know it is a scam, so you either print or pout. Make up your mind. I am sure a 6-9 ink printer will do better work, and reds DO tend to render out a little on the intense side, and fleshes can go to pink in "Vivid Photo" mode if you want a criticisms. But no printer is the same in the end product, you have to learn how it operates and compensate. Another caveat is to ensure that you always enter the proper paper size into the control panel or your printed material will not center properly on the paper. This is not always a bad thing if you can trim the white sections to balance it out, but it can pi55 you off if you forget to select the proper paper size and end up with something you can't easily fix.

Using this just for photos. It was esay to set up, and prints very nice photos. Colors are rich and sharp on photo paper.
Inks, like every other photo printer, are a little pricey. Would love to find a good photo printer that didn't cost an arm and a leg on consumables. That said, this one isn't out of line with the rest of them.
Overall, it works well and I am quite satisfied with the output.

The only use this printer is being used for is to print photography. I have printed 20 images so far in different sizes and colors, and they have came out amazing. The images look like a professional has printed them, but its just little old me. I recommend this printer to anyone and everyone. You do not need to use Canon paper with the printer. I have used two different types, HP and Staples brand and they print beautifully.

I bought this printer to give the Canon brand a try. But the company has failed me. I am returning the printer.
The first one arrived dead - the print head did not register inks being put in. Canon tech support was awesome and quickly determined that the printer needed replacement. They got another one to me in under a week.
That one arrived dead too. Inks were detected, but nothing came out on paper. Again support was awesome, determined that I needed a third, got it to me fast, along with an additional set of inks.
That one arrived dead too. Inks are detected, but if I try to print, I get a message that the front tray is closed. It is not. I've flapped it back and fourth several times. Can't get past the error.

I had to replace my Canon S9000 which lasted more than 10 years. I refill my own cartridges so I have lots of ink which I don't want to throw away. I also need a wide format for 11x17 paper. The iX6520 lets me refill my own cartridges (I found some that have auto resetting chips), uses standard Canon inks and has a wide format. It's also very quiet. On the down side the quality is not impressive and it uses a lot of ink by cleaning the heads all too often. But what do you want for the price?

Not for photos. Great for anything else. If you never print photos this could be a good printer except that you only get full ink cartridges the first time you buy it. All refills are less than full and they are black so you cannot see how much is in them. Pictures with faces sometimes come out acceptable, but never great and are usually so poor that you would not want to display them. I want crisp, quality, detailed, printshop photos and this does not deliver. I'm sending it back and would not recommend it to anyone doing photos.
