The Mountainsmith Trekker FX Hiking Pole / Monopod performs dual duties as a hiking pole and a monopod for a camera or lightweight camcorder. (The manufacturer recommends a maximum load capacity of 3 lb for the monopod.)
The Trekker FX is composed of 7075 aluminum alloy, which has a strength comparable to many steels. But at less than 1 lb, the Trekker FX should pass the "curl test" for even the most discriminating back-country explorer.
The hiker transforms into the nature photographer with alacrity. Removing the top cap of the hiking pole reveals a standard 1/4"-20 male bolt, which fits virtually every point & shoot and DSLR on the market today, as well as most camcorders. A threaded washer tightens the fit against spring-loaded female camera mounts.
The Trekker FX has three telescoping sections, which extend from 26 to 54". The EVA foam handle is molded to suit a hand's grip, and the wrist strap is adjustable.

Comments about Mountainsmith Trekker FX Hiking Pole / Monopod:
feels like a full value hiking stick: trusted to aid balance acting as third auxiliary leg in hiking situations. With this background, I will trust it for support/steadying of much heavier collared lenses than the given specs. While making photographs, I have the Kirk QRC-1 clamp on for convenient mounting of gear with arca plates. I might occasionally also use the manfrotto 234 swivel/tilt head (with the clamp again).Wishlist to the manufacturer: ability to easily pack in midsize checked luggage (wish+ onboard luggage), probably 1 more section required. Shockabsorbing spring in the stick makes disassembled packmeasure larger - thus I prefer no spring for smaller packing. A slightly more elaborate handgrip may be appreciated. I would buy the whislisted one in addition - at three times the current price.

Comments about Mountainsmith Trekker FX Hiking Pole / Monopod:
I got two of these poles for hiking and to set up my tarp in porch mode.
These poles are perfect to use as spreader bars for my hammock so I can save weight when hiking by leaving the bars at home and useing these instead.
These poles are strong and pretty lightweight. There is nothing I don't like about them. When I was shopping around the net looking for these poles most places where sold out and twice the price as here.
This was a great deal on a excellent set of poles.

It's not as strong as i though it would be... but it's still a good option for hiking.
Don't lean too much or it will crack.

I bought this for my brother for Christmas. He enjoys photography and hiking. This seemed like the perfect way to combine the two. The construction seems sturdy, and the camera mount works well. I would buy this again.
