Looking for the digital equivalent of an old-school rangefinder camera? Try the Fujifilm FinePix X100 Digital Camera. It has a fixed focal length 35mm (equivalent in 35mm format) lens with a very bright f/2.0 aperture (a classic lens choice for rangefinders) and a 9-blade diaphragm for beautiful blur in out-of-focus areas (bokeh)--plus a very large (approximately 4-5 times the size of a typical compact camera sensor) APS-C CMOS sensor with 12.3MP of resolution.
The durable magnesium alloy body is clearly based on time-honored rangefinder designs, with the welcome addition of a small grip for better stability in holding the camera. A switchable hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder and a high resolution 2.8" LCD monitor with 460K-dot resolution make capturing images with the X100 a real joy.
Unlike most old-school rangefinders, though, the X100 will also give you 720p HD video with stereo sound. Other non-traditional features are sensitivity from 100 to 12800 ISO, RAW capture and processing (in-camera) for the highest quality images possible, and high-speed contrast autofocus.
You can use the Film Simulation mode to give your photos the distinctive look of Velvia, Provia or Astia film, or Monochrome (with separate adjustment of shadow and highlight tones for superb control over the tonality). Macro mode will focus as close as 4" from the lens, and a built-in 3-f/stop neutral density (ND) filter can be activated with a simple on/off switch.
The X100 is all traditional rangefinder design on the outside, all 21st-century technology on the inside.

Yes, it is somewhat buggy, odd in operational sensibilities, button use. And the lock up of writing to the card is annoying as heck, but after the recent firmware update, things like the overall operation and AF has sped up, no more oddball non-mode uniformity like the ISO changing from mode to mode. No more "Turn the Camera off and on again" messages. This is not a Manual Focus camera, at all and it is not going to be either, so as soon as you get that out of your heads, you will see this tool for what it is, which for me is the following:
I have owned the X100 for nearly two months, used it exclusively in professional reportage and candid corporate and political work. In this time, I have shot about 6,500 images with the X100. The way I use the camera is pretty much as follows...
AF-S mode with the smaller more precise focus box, locking with the AF-AF-L button. Auto ISO with a top setting of 3,200 although 6,400 is not unusable. Auto White Balance, JPEG, no raw, it is the best I have ever seen in any digital camera in my 20 years of using them....seriously, it has the consistency of good slide film stock, you can count on it. I use both the OVF and EVF depending on how close I need to be, of course favoring the OVF which is what Leica should have done in the M9. And as a pro Leica shooter, I would like to add that the X100 puts the M9 to shame in terms of both kinds of noise, ISO and shutter derived. In fact, for what I needed the M9 for before I sold it, the X100 is simply a better camera overall since all I ever used with it was a 35/2 to begin with. Battery life is actually decent for how I use it, 300-500 shots per battery which is fine for how I use it, one or two shots at a time.
If you are like the masses and are gear-centric, love to play with new toys and either brag or berate them on internet sites, then *Please* do everyone a favor and skip this little camera, it is not for you. It takes talent, persistence and knowing that you actually need the strengths it posses to make the most of it. In any assignment I go to in which people are the subject or size and weight are a serious issue, I am going to take this camera.

The form factor for this camera is EXACTLY what i want. I waited a long time to get this camera. After using it for 3 days I had to return it. This camera does not focus correctly. I do not understand why this issue is not being discussed.
I am a very experienced photographer - over 35 years. I have NEVER ...... repeat NEVER ...... had any camera with this type of unreliable focus. I read all the info on all the forums to mitigate the problem. I concluded it was not worth the effort. This camera is not ready for prime time. At this price you should not have to WORK HARD to get Autofocus to work properly.
Yes ...... it had the latest firmware.

Love the picture quality! Menus and functionality are different than my Canon T2i, but I'm getting used to it. I love my T2i especially with my Canon 70-200 L but I feel self conscious with it as the lens is quite large and conspicuous. The Fuji x100 makes me feel more like a tourist...somewhat less conspicuous! It looks great, and did I mention the awesome picture quality?!

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix X100 Digital Camera:
Here's my story and I'm stickin' to it.When I was a child, my dear old Granddad had a Leica IIIc he had bought at the PX in 1947. He took fantastic pictures/slides while stationed in Europe, '46-'49. I've wanted one ever since. When I first saw the X-100, I thought immediately how similar looking it was to that beautiful IIIc my Granddad owned, but I kind of thought it was more of an image sell, than an actual practical use, especially since it has no optical or digital zoom capability. And the price was prohibitive, I thought, for a "cool" looking camera. I was looking for one of the new compact, but high quality cameras like the Olympus XZ-2 and Panasonic LX-7 (which is so close to my dream of a Leica). However, I am stationed overseas and the Army Post Office has placed a rather cruel restriction on shipping anything with Li-ion batteries (???). Camera's are simply way overpriced here in Germany and the PX usually has a dissappointing array of cameras, also not priced to well. However, one day I walked into the PX and lo and behold, they had an X-100 with the brown leather case on a bundle deal. I couldn't resist, and so bought it sort of on a lark, it was just too good a deal to pass up, and again, I had to think of my Granddad and the great deal he got on his Leica through the PX in 1947. But I was still unsure of it's capabilities.I have not had a chance to really run this camera through the paces, but on area I have experimented on is low light. This is important to me; I have owned several 35mm SLRS and two DSLRS and a myriad of digital cameras, and low light photography has always been an area that I liked to shoot. The X-100 performs like no other camera I have ever used, and the built in flash is downright remarkable. I purchase the EF20 right after I got the camera, and am now not sure I will ever use it. The built in flash has the best fill-in and supplementary lighting I have ever seen, it's phenomenal. I use it way more often than I have ever used flashes. I have never liked the look of flash photography, unless professionally done, which is about what this flash accomplishes. However, with some manual tweaking, non-flash low light capabilities are excellent. I had no idea. The EVF/OVF switcheability is also a great plus. I did not realize at first that you could switch back and forth on the viewfinder itself, and then make the LCD switch; that's a factor that would made me have want the camera all on it's own. On the other cameras, I had decided that I would want a optional viewfinder; they are expensive and make the camera's profile a bit too large, plus you cannot use an external flash when they are attached, so to me, this is an enormous advantage.Yesterday, I updated the firmware. For tweakers, this is an interesting process which I've never done before. It was too easy, and very interesting. I can hardly wait for the next update! I immediately reprogrammed the Fn button for delayed exposure as I use that often and it makes seem even more retro that way. I then re-programmed the RAW button for ISO adjustment. This is a fantastic function. Now I can hardly wait to get the 28mm lens to try out the 1.30 upgrade function for it.There is really only one addition that I hope Fujifilm will make and that's to add a telephoto lens like another poster mentioned, something like 24-80mm. However, It's not that big a deal, the camera simply stands on it's own. This X-100 has completely re-introduced me to photography. I think the size, weight and quality level of this camera is top-notch and everytime I look at it, I think of that old IIIc. As great as that camera was, I think even my Granddad would have liked this X-100 every bit as much as I do!

Hated this camera but because I was lazy to return it, I kept it. Eventually I began to slowly fall in love with this camera because of the process you go through getting the image you want. I love the files and how this camera performs. So far there is no need to upgrade or wanting to upgrade to the x100s just yet.

Looks great. Well built. Sharp lens. Many of the complaints about this camera are undeserved. It is fast enough, and works fine in "low light." It just takes a little time to understand its menues, etc. Great pictures from a lightweight cutting edge machine. Could not be happier.

This is a reference piece of equipment even if it isn't the latest latest offering. Owning one is already cool but it's going to get cooler and the X100 is already a modern classic. The look, feel and usability are more than excellent, even though an investment in getting the best out of it is required. (When was that not true for anything worthwhile in life?) Results from this machine are always excellent once you're following some basic guidelines and have understood the "philosophy" of the firmware. Sports and anything high velocity are a challenge (really not designed for that kind of application) but otherwise any subject can be creatively and successfully addressed. It's difficult to put into words, but I just love owning and using this camera.

I've not had this camera very long, but so far I really like it. I don't see it replacing a dSLR, but rather complimenting it. It does take a bit of getting used to, but in the end it's worth it. The hybrid viewfinder is a great idea. It works very well.

I feel like i have my mamiya 7 again only with a fixed lens.
This i a real review of the camera but simple. I am a working pro for 30 plus years.
This is a very simple camera to learn and use. I don't know what all the fuss is about this camera being difficult. Fuji did a great job with it's easy display. The functions and setup and are a lot easier than canon or nikon which i own both systems and use.
This camera is the real deal to take anywhere with you. Ever out somewhere and thinking i wish i had a good quality camera right now but taking that canon 5 D Mark 3 or nikon D800 is a lot to keep with you all the time this is the camera to always have with you. I am so proud to own this work of art. Don't pay attention to the reviews out there that issues occur, sure any camera can give problems but don't get rid of this if you own it. Send it back and get it fixed. It will probably someday be a collector camera.
The #1 thing i like about this camera is it forces you to work and prepare and be a better photographer. I uploaded a picture when i first got this from B&H photo last week. I was in the kitchen and put the camera in macro mode and out came this beautiful picture of these banana's which need to be eat soon. The macro is awesome. well i did my job. Hope all you people who love to take pictures buy this camera and yes it is worth the money and don't buy used most people who sell their camera something is usually going on. Worth every dime. Good Luck.

If you joined the camera world before total point & shoot automation you will love the X100. The IQ and operation remind me of large format view cameras. With a view camera it is necessary to totally create the parameters that will result in the perfect image. The X100 allows me to do just that with relative ease. The manual focus is superb. I have yet to even try AF. Setting aperture and shutter speed is quick, simple and uses large dials. The image quality is superior to any dslr I have ever used. I double checked exposure by using my hand held meter and the X100 was nearly perfect on each shot.
Naturally, the X100 has its minor quirks such as the flimsy command dial and too dark EVF. Howevr the OVF is brilliantly bright.
The feel, weight and balance of the X100 are excellent.
If you really want to get back into photography and pass up total automation, this is the camera for you!

I'm an enthusiast photographer and wanted to get something that would getting me re-engaged with my hobby. The x100 has been great. It's not the speediest (the autofocus can't keep up with my kids), but a little patience and zone focusing have done wonders. It render B&W really nicely, I think. I'm enjoying the fixed 35mm for the way it forces you to think about composure. Above all, it's a camera I look forward to spending time with. It won't be for everybody,

Finally GOT IT !(thanks B&H) I like it, I really really do like it ALOT ! Actually it's my FF Nikon D700's new pancake 35mm lens. ;-) +'s: OVF/EVF, fast lens, Bauhaus body, metal adjustment dials, . . ..., OVF/EVF, . . ....Very easy to use, specially if you have SLR experience. Yes it pays to read the manual too. Buy better strap & 16GB SD card, use it. Purchased AFTER buying FF DSLR and high $ lenses. Could not be happier with decision to buy X100 over the other X cameras. OVF/EVF data points are customizable. Solid and well balanced.

I've been wanting the X100 since it was introduced. It was hard to get it in the first year, so I thought why not waited for Fujifilm to come out with the next generation X100 with all the fixes to the AF problems, the bad menus, manual focus... that many people were writing about. Well, it doesn't seem like Fujifilm will do that anytime soon, and with the $ instant rebate I decided to get one. And I'm glad I did. What a beautiful and excellent camera it is. I have no complaint. I couldn't agree more with what RamblinMan wrote in his review. The firmware updates fixed most of the faults, and any complaints are just nit_pickings. Just get one, you will love it.

The Fuji is truly an amazing camera. I have been shooting with a Nikon D300s for quite some time and I wanted a smaller camera that could still equal great image quality with semi-pro/pro cameras. And I was not disappointed.
It gets a little time to get used to the camera and buttons. The autofocus is pretty slow but if you update to the new firmware that makes a huge difference.
I found the image quality to be amazing and I absolutely love the look and ergonomic features of the camera. Great camera to have around your neck everyday (better than my D300s), people aren't as shy in front of it because it is so small and discreet.

This is the worst camera I've ever had. The picture quality is too bad. I tried RAW and JPEG formats but both of them are full of grain. I do not recommend this camera. It's picture quality is worse than a 100-dollar cell phone. Too bad. Waste of money. It's impossible to take those photos shown at Fujifilm web site.
I've been taking photographs for more than 10 years. I'm a semi-professional photographer. I definitely do not ever, never, recommend this camera. Don't buy it.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix X100 Digital Camera:
Years from now, this camera will still be recognizable as a game-changer in the industry and for good reasons. This is just a fantastic camera and the quality with which it's built is far and above cameras in it's price range. Fuji has engineered the camera that I've been waiting my life for - one without unecessary features, and with the control that reminds you of days gone past. It definitely tries to get out of the way and let you make the shot, rather than impose itself upon your picture taking process. I think this is the perfect travel camera - it's smaller and higher quality than the DSLR you probably own, and can be thrown in a bag quite easily and without lugging around all the extra garbage in your DLSR ultra-bag. Once you get to your location, it's inconspicuous enough to not be obtrusive, and it's so quiet it's virtually impossible to upset a situation - just record events and places as you see them. Go on vacation, bring just the X100 and the battery charger, and you'll be all set.I only have two legitimate gripes about this camera, and the first is that I don't actually like the shutter relase. I feels a tiny bit spongy, and you have to push it down just a millimeter or two farther than I think you should. This is all solved with buying a soft release button - I highly recommend that for all X100 users. The second gripe is that the Manual Focusing option is almost unusable. The digital "fly by wire" focusing is about 4x too slow, and is rather jerky (ie it is also easy to overshoot your target and then have to adjust back). If Fuji could release a firmware update to fix that, I'd have nothing to complain about.Lastly, a few notes on the supposedly terrible autofocus. First ot all, it's not that bad, it really isn't, and that's even before the firmware updates. Second of all, the firmware updates make the autofocus even better, so don't fret. Fuji has shown that it's committed to this camera and are releasing updates regularly. Thirdly, the slowest focus is in the Macro mode, and you shouldn't be sticking your camera where it'll be intruding after a second of autofocus anyways... plus the focus is very accurate in Macro mode anyways, it just takes a second. You have to remember that this camera has all the image quality of your standard APS-C DSLR in a package that's 1/2 the size and twice the build quality. I recommend this for wide-angle shots of the running of the bulls, not trying to take pictures while running with the bulls if that makes sense.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix X100 Digital Camera:
I was thinking this camera would replace the need for my Contax G2, as sort a small camera to carry around for general shooting. Most of the qualms and reservations I've heard from others on the Fuji X100 are true. The iffy auto focus isn't some ploy to help you think about your shots, it just gets in the way. The lack of a quicker change of ISO option is also annoying. That being said, I think the good points about this outweigh the bad ones. It's small, discreet size are a plus, as well as the quality of the small sensor is quite impressive. On paper it's everything I need in a digital camera to replace shooting 35mm film, therefore, I'm committed to make it work. There's a learning curve for me when it comes to digital cameras anyway but I see a lot of great images coming from this thing. The 17x22 prints I've made from the RAW files are fantastic.

I purchased this camera as my primary street photography camera. The build quality is fantastic- feels excellent in the hand. The small size and weight make the x100 a pleasure to carry while traveling or walking through city streets. Working with the camera has challenged me to get into the scene and get up close to my subjects. Using the fixed focal length is fun and challenging but a nice change of pace (as compared to carrying and changing many lenses on an slr). The image quality is excellent. The autofocus is not very good but I have found a way around this by focusing and recomposing. I highly recommend to those who shoot street photography. It's a lot of fun and makes you want to get more shots every day.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix X100 Digital Camera:
This camera is not for the person who depends on the setting on just about every digital camera (sunset, kids, snow, beach, etc...). It still has auto features that make picture taking easy, yet is geared to the photography that was brought up on cameras that only had manual settings. It does take time to read through all the functions, but this camera is worth it!
