The convergence of imaging technology has not only created a new category of hybrid imaging making devices but more and more, image makers have branched out creatively and sometimes concurrently into cinema, video and photography.

The Sekonic L-308DC DigiCineMate is the perfect light meter for today's DSLR and digital practitioners. The intuitive LCD readout can be user-adjusted to display the specific functions needed for the task at hand. It reads incident light via the Lumisphere and Lumidisc. Slide the Lumisphere for reflected light readings.

In Cine mode the meter reads out in lux or foot-candles as well as fps (frames per second) and shutter angles. In Photo mode the L-308DC displays shutter speeds, f/stops or EV at ISOs from 3 to 8000. Besides ambient readings the L-308DC can meter flash in incident or reflected mode with or without a sync cord.

Finally, at a mere 3.4 oz, this light-reading tool is also lightweight.

Sekonic DigiCineMate L-308DC
The versatility of today's cameras is expanding at an amazing rate. Digital SLR cameras are used to record moving images and digital video cameras are used to capture still frames for printing. Whether you are a DSLR videographer, cinematographer, still photographer or involved in any facet of image capture, the Sekonic L-308DC is the perfect meter for you.
Three Ways to Meter
The compact, Sekonic L-308DC is the first meter that can be customized to display only specific functions needed for the task at hand for fast, easy operation.
  • DSLR videographers can make exposure readings and control light using shutter speeds and frame rates and get aperture settings with one-tenth stop accuracy. The display can be customized to match your camera in full, 1/2 or 1/3 step readings. Brightness display in lux and foot-candles make it perfect for lighting-design work.
  • Cinematographers can make exposure readings and control light using the most useful frame rates and shutter angles and get aperture settings with one-tenth stop accuracy. Exposure display can be customized to match your camera and lux and foot-candle readout enables quick setup of lights.
  • Traditional still-image photographers will enjoy shutter-priority display of a full range of ambient and flash functions including Cord and Cordless flash measurement as well as EV. All with one-tenth stop accuracy and display that can be customized to your camera.
  • Three Ways to Measure Light
  • The L-308DC's Lumisphere tells you about the light you are controlling. It is designed to integrate all of the illumination that falls on it, and the subject, including the key light, line light, hair light, eye lights, etc. Besides taking nearly foolproof exposure readings, its incident light reading enables you to set up and light a scene before the principal talent arrives. You can also "walk the set" to measure the evenness of the illumination.
  • Snap on the accessory Lumidisc to measure light for green screens, adjusting ratios and taking lux and foot-candle measurements.
  • Slide the Lumisphere to the right to measure light reflected from the subject or the brightness of light sources or window light.
  • Simplicity
Nothing could be simpler. Set the ISO and take shutter-priority or frame-rate priority readings for aperture display from f/0.5 to f/90.9 with 1/10-stop accuracy. Hold the measuring button for continuous readings. Change shutter speed, frame rate or ISO settings after the measurement and the meter will automatically compensate the aperture setting to maintain proper exposure.
    Cord or Cordless
Shutter-priority readings of flash light can be made with a synch cord or cordlessly at shutter speeds from 1 second to 1/500th second. Measurements include total amount of light, both flash and ambient, for the speed set for the best exposure. The L-308DC automatically resets after each reading in cordless mode to enable fast adjustment of flash brightness.
    Calibration
  • Calibration compensation can be used to tune the L-308DC to film or digital camera sensors or matching the L-308DC to other handheld meters.
  • Power
The L-308DC is powered by a single AA-size alkaline battery that is easily obtainable worldwide.

I have used Sekonic light meters for some time and it was time for a new one. I didn't want to spend the $800 I had spent for my last meter, so I decided to get one that was inexpensive. Well, you get what you pay for. The L-308DC works great. It meets its specifications and functions properly. I have no complaints about the meter itself. For me, the biggest gripe that I have is its construction. The 308DC is made of very lightweight plastic. I would go so far as to say, "cheap" plastic. In hand, it feels like I could crush it with moderate effort. You would think that with a name like, Sekonic, a leader in the light meter industry, they'd want to protect their name and construct every product with sturdier plastics. It makes me a little nervous when carrying it in my camera bag. It rides in the main compartment with camera instead of the side pockets. It comes with a grip-skin and a case, which according to a user information card included in the box, they aren't meant to be used together. The card notes that the meter won't fit in the case with the skin on. This is true to a point. In brand new condition, the meter/skin combination will not fit properly in the case. This is easily remedied. I took a bunch of cardboard and stuffed the case till it matched the width of the meter/skin combo and put it in my car. The heat from the summer sun softened and stretched the leatherette case in a matter of hours (I'll say a good 3 hours with 90 degree outside heat). I brought it back into my 68 degree apartment and let it cool off. My meter/skin combo slides effortlessly into the case now.All construction issues aside, this meter functions great. You just have to "handle with care."

L-308DC is a simple lightweight light meter that u can carry anywhere u like. It can be use for metering lights for photography as well as flash photography. All u need to do is the do some setting & off and on the device & it can go into few modes.
But if u are a doing Video filming, this meter can let u check constant lighting by f stop. Useful for green screen light, I use to have problems checking the constant light from left to right of the whole set, this meter is your answer to adjust proper lighting.
But if your professional video camera is using ND filter 2 or 3 or 4, for outdoor or some bright places, your f stop will change dramatically and this light meter is not of use as it does not do calculation base on the layers of ND filters used on professional video cameras.

    Comments about Sekonic L-308DC DigiCineMate:

I bought this to up my game and to learn. Instead of "faking it," relying on the camera / histogram to make exposure decisions, or having to load footage in my laptop during each shoot's setup, I wanted a tool that was smart and would help me become faster, smarter and more accurate. I'm confident this meter will help me do so.

I know there is a majority of shooters who think a light meter is extraneous, and possibly for video this may be the case. But after watching B&H's event space lectures (esp. Joey Quintero's lighting sessions), it just seemed prudent to at least do my best to incorporate a light meter into my practice.

It does have a slight learning curve - but a lot of practice should eventually make it second nature.

The build is fine, though as others have said, it's very lightweight, so you can't throw it around.

The orange carrying case (back and sides) is excellent. And, after a while, it will all slide into the leather carrying case together (as the leather stretches).

I'm looking forward to using this on my professional shoots, and am happy I bought it. Even more, if I get a chance to explore flash photography, I can just imagine how helpful this tool will be.

    Comments about Sekonic L-308DC DigiCineMate:

The product quality, as mentioned previously, is somewhat cheap. The light meter performs as it should for the most part. It seems to choose a slightly higher F stop than is visually appealing. I often need to stop down more than what is measured. Maybe just a calibration issue. The menu system is also not very intuitive, so definitely read the instructions closely.

As others have said it is light. Use care when handling. Ding one star for that. Otherwise tool allows for perfect exposure quickly. Mine came with case and it will stay on. Pricey but the pics are spot on and require far less developing. Also serves as a learning tool and later for confimation of your estimated camera settings. No guessing in manual camera mode.

Different modes for photography - ambient, flash as well as DSLR and traditional cinematography, all in one affordable meter. Small, light, but flimsy. I will build quality was better. I'd pay more $ for a better body. That's the only reason I'm giving it 4 stars.

                        Comments about Sekonic L-308DC DigiCineMate:

I didn't have a cine meter and I'm starting to shoot HDV. I almost always use a meter vs what's in my camera. Makes setting up lights so much easier and predictable.

The meter seems to work great. Come with a nice 'silicone skin' that fits well.

Very easy to use. I've only used the cine functions so far but have tried out the photo functions. I'm so used to the L-758 and built in radio trigger when I'm doing a flash setup I doubt that I'll use this for that.

                        Comments about Sekonic L-308DC DigiCineMate:

Perfect exposures and levels, but the construction is dodgy. The battery covering fell off just pulling the meter out of my shirt pocket this morning on a shoot. I would buy this product, but also purchase a small piece of gaffer tape to fix the batter covering.

Perfect for measuring incident light and takes the guess work out of some tricky light situations. It's another very useful tool in the videographers toolkit which provides another opinion on how the shot should be exposed when used in conjunction with the camera's zebra and histogram features. I have not had it long enough to make comment about its durability.
