The Gitzo GH1780FQR Series 1 Safari Magnesium Ball Head w/ Quick Release is a jewel of engineering that combines a high load capacity, smooth control over movement, and a small size and weight. Part of the Safari series, the ball head's strength and small size make it an ideal companion for long hikes and long lenses. Gitzo recommends the magnesium head for DSLRs with lenses up to 200mm, but notes that it can safely hold larger equipment as well. The green GH1780FQR head is also ideal for mounting a spotting scope for birdwatching.

The Bubble Ball is a major factor in the head's light weight (only 0.77 lb) and smooth movement. The hollow sphere has an ultra-thin wall, keeping it light, and it's treated with PTFE, one of the lowest-friction materials known to science. Pan adjustment is kept independent from that of tilt so that you can exert a finer degree of control over framing. The head features three levels around the quick-release assembly and a fourth bubble on the stem of the head, to ensure that your frame is flush with the horizon.

The head's double quick-release safety system consists of two pins, one fixed and one manually operated by means of a button, that prevent camera equipment from suddenly dropping out of the head when the quick-release locking knob is released. This is extremely helpful when you're unloading heavy, unbalanced equipment such as long lenses and spotting scopes.

High-grade magnesium construction for material strength and weight savings
Safe Grip material covers the quick-release plate, to keep the camera from slipping or twisting
Spring-assisted double lock (SADL) system employs a high-friction metal to keep the ball in place and your camera immobilized

Comments about Gitzo GH1780FQR Series 1 Safari Magnesium Ball Head w/ Quick Release:

I wanted a mid-priced quality ball head that could more than handle the weight of my Canon 6D plus a 70-200mm L series lens. This model fits my requirements quite well. It's rated to handle up to 22lbs, which is nearly 3 times the weight of my equipment. The only negative is that this model has been discontinued.

Comments about Gitzo GH1780FQR Series 1 Safari Magnesium Ball Head w/ Quick Release:

Have a 1/2 kg P&S camera & a tripod that supports 12 kg; needed a good ball head. Gitzo Safari series had 2 critical features: A) Secondary lock on quick release plate, B) Spirit levels to make sure the camera is level, even if the tripod is not.

Wanted a light ball head, that could support a compact SLR once I'm ready for it. The 2780 model supports an extra 4 kg, but at double the weight.

Biggest weakness is the quick release plate which requires a nickel to turn the bottom screw. Manfrotto did a better job by using a D-ring. (Found that I could overtighten & realized that I had to twist the camera off of the ball head / tripod assembly, since I could not remove the quick release plate from the camera.) Cost it a star.

Who this is NOT for: A waste if your tripod will always a perfectly level floor.

Didn't test the camera in the vertical, the way reviewer Sanjaya did.

Easy solid grip by ball head makes portrait oriented camera position dependable without special additional device. No slippage with Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 28-300 lens extended. Very smooth lightwieght head.Attachment to tripod requires attention to keep firm.

Purchased at the suggestion of a friend for landscape/scenic and wildlife photography primarily and some portrait/family work also. I use a 80-400mm lens that actually stays still now! It adjusts very easily, both in panorama and on the ball adjustment. The secondary lock on the lock plate is a plus in my mind.

Comments about Gitzo GH1780FQR Series 1 Safari Magnesium Ball Head w/ Quick Release:

Bought this with the safari 1 gitzo tripod. Used both for landscape and bird photography with a canon 7d (1.8 lb), 17-55, and 70-200 L (3.3 lb) series 2 lens.
The head is very stable (rated for 22 lb weight capacity) when kept in the horizontal position. However, though my gear weighs less than 6 lbs the ball head is unstable when used in vertical slot with a slow drift downwards.
The tightening screw on the side could have been better on the fingers if slightly larger and not metal.

Comments about Gitzo GH1780FQR Series 1 Safari Magnesium Ball Head w/ Quick Release:

I recently bought a second Gitzo tripod and a GH2780FQR ball head for it. I have a small Gitzo that I needed a head compatible with the quick-release for that larger combo, so I bought its little brother, this head. They both work identically, an advantage when it comes to switching back and forth between the larger tripod/head and the smaller unit. Everything I said in my review of the 2780 would also apply to this unit, so you might read that. In short, I'm very happy with the way this unit works, and find it more than adequate for my D200 (soon to be a D800E) and heavy f/2.8 Nikkor lenses.
