  • Increase Exposure Length
  • MRC Multi-Resistant Coating
  • Rugged Black Brass Filter Ring
  • High Quality Schott Glass

The B+W 58mm 0.9 ND MRC 103M Filter is a solid neutral density filter providing a 3 stop exposure. This 0.9 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the overall coloration of the image.

The Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) is both an anti-reflection coating as well as a protective surface. It helps to increase light transmission by reducing reflections, scattered light, and ghosting. Additionally, it offers greater protection to the filter substrate and stays cleaner for longer than uncoated filters.

B+W filters are constructed from high quality Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. They feature a brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

            Comments about B+W 58mm 0.9 ND MRC 103M Filter:

Cuts out a few stops in overcast daylight. Not quite enough for shooting video on a f/1.4 lens in sunlight unless you're losing light already. May be best to double up on these, as the 3.0 ND can be overkill.

              Comments about B+W 58mm 0.9 ND MRC 103M Filter:

I learned the hard way that a Neutral Density filter is not where you want to pinch pennies. The first one I got had a severe purple cast. Even shooting RAW and working it in Photoshop, the results were disappointing. This is a true NEUTRAL density, it has not affected the color of any image so far.
The brass fitting makes it feel much sturdier than lenses with aluminum rings.
I think this would be the minimum strength of an ND that I would buy, and I intend to get a stronger one soon.
I was pleased to see that it came in a good-quality plastic filter case with padded lining. A nice customer service touch.

                      Comments about B+W 58mm 0.9 ND MRC 103M Filter:

Use it for outdoor portraits in daylight using strobes. The maximum sync speed of 1/200 sec does not allow for shooting wide open. By using this ND filter you can open up the aperture by 3 stops which gives you creamy, professional looking bokeh. Yes, you can use it for silky smooth waterfalls too.

Excellent B+W build. No color cast. Alternatives: Hoya

                          Comments about B+W 58mm 0.9 ND MRC 103M Filter:

I bought this to use on my older C and C T* Zeiss lenses (via a Bay50 to 58mm step up ring) + any 58mm Canon lenses I purchase in the future like the 85mm f/1.8. If you want to shoot at large apertures while in direct sunlight, an ND filter is the way to go. A 3 stop ND filter is the sweet spot for most of the conditions I find myself in.

                          I always buy the B + W brand because I think it's got exceptional build quality. This is my 4th B + W filter.
