If you want the features and high quality image processing of a Blu-ray player in a portable package, the Sony BDP-SX1000 Portable Blu-ray Disc Player is a rewarding choice. You can enjoy Blu-ray and standard DVD movies on its 10" LCD screen in brilliant SVGA resolution. Weighing in at just under four pounds, its lightweight size makes it a great travelling companion.
Just because it's small doesn't mean it doesn't have the bells and whistles of a larger Blu-ray player. The BDP-SX1000 offers an Ethernet port so you can connect to an internet connection to take advantage of Blu-ray disc extras with BD Live. By downloading additional content from the internet, you can access interactive quizzes, games, even filmmaker chats related to the Blu-ray movie you're watching. It also supports BONUSVIEW, so you can see two sources simultaneously with one displayed in a smaller window.
It also plays CDs, CD-R and CD-RW so you can enjoy discs you burned yourself. If you have home movies shot with a camcorder and burned to a disc, you can play those too. Since it also has a USB port, you'll have even more options. That means you can connect a USB memory drive, memory card reader, digital camera or camcorder to the USB port to enjoy your photos, videos, and music.
If you have other Sony devices that have BRAVIA sync, you can enjoy streamlined control with just one remote. If you don't, your new BDP-SX1000 ships with its own fully functional remote.
Additional convenient features of the BDP-SX1000 include a Blu-ray disc and DVD parental control lock, a headphone jack out, and a car battery adapter for portable use. So whether you want to enjoy your collection of DVDs or take advantage of the online extras offered with your favorite Blu-ray movies, this multi-format disc player is a solid choice that can keep you entertained.

Had this product less than 24 hours but have tried out many features. Main features that drew me to this product were the USB port for playing movie files (wide variety of formats; mkv and mts2 in addition to mp4, mpeg, etc) and the ability to update the firmware through the network port. The large screen is nice but need to adapt to how to mount it in the van as it is wider than the space between front seats.

It's got a MATTE screen. That made me very angry especially because more and more average consumers who don't know anything about Video prefer matte, same way goes when you go to any grocery store or ice cream place, Strawberry or banana flavors have practically DISAPPEARED in America. Its either chocolate or vanilla, period.
Thanks to who? The big mass of Matte screen idiots who most definitely only like the sickening chocolate and vanilla flavor while the strawberry banana people like me and other professional videographers/editors and Videophiles like glossy screens.
Therefore manufacturers are probably avoiding portable units on glossy screens. I cannot find anymore a glossy player. thanks to my fast action, I bought 3 rare 27" glossy screens from B&H for my Mac pro while they still last. B&H used to have a Samsung portable Blu-Ray with a glossy player as I wanted to exchange and B&H discontinued.
Here is a bit of advice for the average Joe who likes matte. Glossy screens give the best color saturation and deep blacks, rather than a DULL and lifeless matte screen which also gives you glare, not as distinct as the glossy screen but it is there (that blurry shiny reflection) Jeezzz.
Change the lighting, close the shade, buy a screen hood if you have to but get glossy...

I had to replace our Toshiba portable DVD player which quit on us after 8 years. After reviewing our options the Sony BDP-SX1000 sounded like the winner. We received the player from B&H in record time and so far it is excellent. The picture is unbelievably crisp and the 10" screen size is perfect. The player is easy to use and it appears, after this short time of ownership, that we made the right choice. Thanks B&H for your excellent price and prompt attention to detail.

I mainly use this unit when traveling. I have material that I like to study and this unit works with external USB devices and will process modern formats such as MP4 files. I expect using USB devices to extend battery life a good bit. Long trips such as Alaska to New Jersey make battery life important. I will be testing such a trip within a month.

I am a Police Officer and often work "side jobs"that require me to sit in my car for hours. I purchased this player for thos occasions when I have the time to watch movies in my car.
The screen is crisp and clear delivering great images. I used a male to male 3.5mm adapter and played the sound through my car stereo. The only downside to the player is the non removeable battery. Blue ray disks load fast. No skipping or glitches at all.

I recently traded in my laptop for a desktop and a tablet. But I then realized how much I used to use it to watch movies! Sure, I can stream on my iPad but what about my blu-rays and DVD? This filled in the gap quite nicely. The price was reasonable and I liked the size screen. I went with a Sony because of their quality and superior remotes (sounds minor, but try using a poorly designed remote and you'll find how important it really is!). One thing I don't understand is why it is so thick (to today's standards, that is). Laptops are half the thickness of this device!

I travel a lot and was looking for a good portable blu-ray player. I was relying on Sony's reputation with blu-ray players, and was not disappointed. Attractive blue color as well.

I have had 3 DVD players before buying this one. I love it!! The picture is bigger and I can watch a movie without wearing my glasses.
I only have regular DVD'S right now but I'm looking forward to watching a BluRay movie on it.

This is the best DVD player I ever owned. Very stable (consistent performance) and easy to use. Video quality is excellent. I haven't yet tested my home videos on this player. I'm hoping it will play them unlike both my non-portable DVDs. I thought twice about investing $ in a DVD player since it's something I use only occasionally but I'm very glad I made the purchase.

Bought this DVD player for my son, who's been wanting a portable player with the 'Blue Ray' capacity for awhile now. He gives it 5 stars, and I'm passing that evaluation along here.

there are great features about this product, simple to operate, i was awaiting the arrival of sony,s portable blue - ray version, i still have the first portable, from 2000, the astraunats used it in space, and they gave a great report, over - all, i would give a ( 100% )rating of this product, sony is and would always be the leader in the electronic industry. when i was in japan, i visited the head - quarters, -- of course, i had my sony camera, the one with the ( 240 ) gigs

Comments about Sony BDP-SX1000 Portable Blu-ray Disc Player:
You would think this being a new release player from Sony it would incorporate all the latest features that Blu-ray has to offer. Sadly it lacks two key features that are pretty much stock standard when it comes to BD these days.
Firstly the screen itself is not capable of 24Hz. If you set the machine up to output 24P via HDMI the in-built LCD will go black during playback at which point you are given the following error "24P cannot be displayed on the LCD screen". Hence, it's definitely not 24Hz capable.
Secondly the machine does not support Blu-ray 3D at all. I can understand that perhaps the in-built screen would not support the refresh rate but to prohibit 3D output via HDMI is just downright insulting. There's no technical reason for this limitation. Sony could address this with a firmware update but they have yet to do so.
Furthermore, the USB port does not support NTFS formatted drives meaning just about any HD file you can think of is also not supported by default (as they are generally larger than 4GB). Again, Sony's latest stand-alone players support NTFS so why this player doesn't is beyond me.
There's a lot to like about this player but one just can't look past the flaws.
