JVC's modular GY-HM750 Compact Shoulder Camcorder is a professional ENG camera that uses the same 1/3" 3CCD sensor and 68-pin chassis as the GY-HM790. More streamlined than its studio-friendly predecessor, the GY-HM750 comes equipped with a Canon 14x zoom and is equally capable of capturing 1080i/p, 720p, and 480i video to native .MP4 or .MOV files. Standard-definition .AVI and .MOV formats can also be recorded for legacy SD applications, making the camera tops in its ability to output ready-to-edit files for such NLEs as Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere.

Along with an improved Pre Rec cache function, the GY-HM750 adds a trick of its own: simultaneous recording to both of its SD/SDHC memory slots. That means instant backups or client copies, making your workflow as efficient as possible (an optional SxS recorder provides further extended capture). The camera's full complement of broadcast features also include HD-SDI output, 4:2:2 sampling, and variable data and frame rates. And with its ability to easily interface with various JVC modules for live satellite uplink and HD video feeds, the GY-HM750 becomes a truly multi-purpose capture device, equally adept at shooting breaking news, sports, documentaries, and other on-location events.

Modular Design
The GY-HM750 is equipped with a 68-pin chassis connector that allows various modules to be attached to the unit without external cabling. JVC presently offers a DVB-ASI module (KA-AS790G) and an SxS Memory Card recorder (KA-MR100G). Modules are installed to the rear panel chassis connector, and are powered directly by the camera. No additional cabling is required. Modules effectively become part of the camera with no unsightly exposed cables. This design also provides for future expansion.

Note: Fiber and Multi-core modules specifically designed for the GY-HM790 utilize advanced features of the HM790 and are not compatible with the GY-HM750.

Performance

Advanced Technologies = Higher HD Image Quality
The GY-HM750 utilizes three precisely aligned 1/3" progressive scan full HD CCDs--one each for red, green and blue primary colors--and outputs full resolution in both 720p and 1080i/p. JVC's advanced ProHD capture technology incorporates a new patent-pending Adaptive Pixel Correlation Technique (APCT), and combined with TRIPLEX Offset Technology delivers exceptional resolving power comparable to cameras with larger image sensors.
Upgraded 35Mbps MPEG2 Encoder
Drawing on its long experience of developing dedicated encoders for the broadcasting industry, JVC has equipped the GY-HM750U with a powerful MPEG2 encoder capable of compressing full 1920 x 1080 HD video at up to 35 Mbps. The result is the pristine picture quality that professional users demand, from a surprisingly compact and lightweight shoulder-mount camcorder. MPEG2 long GOP is the most widely accepted broadcast standard compression supported by all popular editing systems and broadcast servers. In the HQ mode, the encoder operates with a variable bit rate average of 35Mbps. The SP mode records at a constant bit rate of either 19.7Mbps or 25Mbps to ensure compatibility with a wide range of equipment.
Variable Frame Rate Recording (Overcrank, Undercrank)
When recording in the 720p 35Mbps mode, the camera can be set to record at a frame rate different than the playback rate. This capability makes it possible to record slow or fast motion when the recording is played back at 24p or 30p. Available frame rates are 10, 12, 15, 20, 24, 30, 40, 48, and 60 fps.
Standard Definition Recording Capability
Responding to the needs of the industry, the GY-HM750, in addition to its capability as an HD recorder, offers standard-definition recording for maximum flexibility. Recording in SD provides a time-saving alternative to down-conversion of HD material for SD broadcasts, which is still an industry standard in many countries worldwide. This feature offers a fundamental advantage for professionals with time-sensitive SD workflows.
High-performance Canon HD lens
The GY-HM750 includes a detachable 14x Canon KT14x4.4KRSJ HD lens based on the superb optics found in more expensive HD lenses. Its superior MTF provides higher resolution than typical "stock" lenses. The lens has improved lateral and longitudinal chromatic aberration characteristics and is ideal for full 1920 x 1080 imaging. Canon's internal focusing system minimizes "breathing" compared with typical focusing systems. Internal focus also makes possible a more efficient light-blocking lens hood. ENG shooters will be pleased with its wider angle and consistent brightness from 4.4mm (wide) to 62mm (telephoto) with no F-drop.
Lens Options
In addition to the GY-HM750's standard detachable 14x Canon lens, numerous lens options are available from JVC including the 13xTh13x3.5BRMU wide angle Fujinon zoom lens, a new 17x XT17sx45BRMK1 Fujinon zoom lens, 18x HTs18X4.2BRM Fujinon zoom lens, 20x KT20X5BKRS Canon zoom lens, and adapters that allow 1/2" and 2/3" bayonet mount lenses to be used. Add the HZ-CA13U film lens mount adapter to the 1/3" bayonet mount, to enable mounting of 16mm film camera lenses to the GY-HM750, greatly expanding production lens options. The camera features an "image flip" function that corrects for the inverted image produced by prime lenses.
SDHC Memory Card Recording
The GY-HM750 records on widely available SDHC Class 6 or Class 10 memory cards, presently available in capacities up to 32GB. The camera provides 2 memory card slots, for a total of up to 64GB of on board storage--enough for more than 6 hours of continuous HD recording (when recording in 19Mbps mode). In the relay mode, the camera automatically begins recording on the second card when the first card fills up. When the second card fills up, the camera will revert to recording to the first card slot, allowing for virtually unlimited recording lengths. The GY-HM750 is also able to record on both memory cards simultaneously, instantly providing a back-up or client copy of the recording. The file format and data rate of the clips on each card will be identical.
Native File Recording
The GY-HM750 incorporates JVC's Native File Recording technology that stores video in the ready-to-edit file formats used by Apple's Final Cut Pro and other popular nonlinear editing systems. The HD and SD ".mov" files created in the camera can be easily dragged onto Final Cut Pro's timeline or clip bin without conversion or rewrapping, saving time while keeping the recorded material first-generation. There is no need to use an intermediate codec.

For users of other NLE systems, including solutions from Adobe, Avid, Canopus and Vegas, the GY-HM750 supports the MP4 file format, which can be edited without re-encoding. HDV-compatible M2T files can also be created from these MP4 files using the ProHD Clip Manager.

For standard definition applications, in addition to .mov format files, the GY-HM750 creates popular type-2 AVI files that import easily into most current and legacy NLE systems.
Optional SxS Media Recorder Module
The KA-MR100G optional SxS media recorder allows simultaneous shooting to one or both SDHC cards plus SxS media providing additional backup or archival recordings. This compact recorder attaches directly to the GY-HM750 without an adapter. The compact media recorder provides status information on its built-in LCD screen as well as on the camera's viewfinder. Recorded video on the SxS cards can be played back on the camera's LCD monitor or viewfinder. Recording on the KA-MR100G is always in the .MP4 format, regardless of the format being recorded to the SDHC card(s).
Pre Rec (Retro Cache) Start Mode
In this mode, the GY-HM750 continually records up to 20 seconds in cache memory. When the trigger is pressed, the live signal is appended to the cache recording, giving the shooter a head start in getting the shot. This feature is invaluable in capturing breaking events when the shot would be lost before a traditional camera could begin recording. When Pre Rec is activated, a "P" will be displayed in the viewfinder and on the LCD monitor.
Continuous Clip Mode
In this mode, the GY-HM750 creates a single clip file from multiple trigger presses. This is ideal when "in camera editing" is preferred. The complete shot sequence is instantly available as a single clip. When recording in the Continuous Clip Mode, timecode can be either free run or in the REC mode.
JVC ProHD Clip Manager
The ProHD Clip Manager for both Mac and Windows makes it easy to manage MP4 clips on the GY-HM750's memory cards from your computer. With a few clicks of the mouse you can copy, move or delete clips, preview clip content, as well as view and edit clip metadata. A thumbnail view of all the clips in the current folder shows the content of each clip at a glance. Use the viewer to watch the whole clip, or change the clip's index frame used for the thumbnail. You can also manage folders to keep your clips organized, and check the remaining free space on a card.
ProHD Log and Transfer Plug-in
The ProHD Log and Transfer Plug-in is a software for Apple's Final Cut Pro that lets you drop MP4 files recorded on the GY-HM750 into the clip bin of Final Cut Pro&. With the plug-in installed, you can view thumbnails of the MP4 files on a memory card from the Log and Transfer screen of Final Cut Pro. Simply drag and drop the thumbnails into the bin to automatically convert the clips to Quicktime, ready for use.

Unsurpassed Versatility

Compact Shoulder Form Factor
Weighing only 8.2 lbs including lens, viewfinder, microphone and battery, the GY-HM750 rests comfortably on the right shoulder providing stable, steady shots. Unlike some oversized handheld models, the GY-HM750 becomes part of the shooter, similar to larger cameras but without the fatigue associated with them. The handle has been redesigned for better carrying balance, and to accommodate wearing gloves in cold weather.
High Resolution LCOS viewfinder
The GY-HM750 is equipped with a new, rugged, high-resolution viewfinder based on a new .45-inch 1.22MP Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCOS) panel (852 x 480 x 3). This new all-digital viewfinder displays images with more than 5 times the resolution of typical color viewfinders. Its sturdy, reinforced die-cast aluminum chassis and LED light source ensure years of trouble-free operation.
Jumbo Size 4.3" Flip-out LCD Panel
Complementing the new high resolution viewfinder is a large LCD flip-out monitor that can be used in recording, playback, clip management, and menu operation. The 4.3" 800 x 480 WVGA LCD offers a 16:9 aspect ratio and provides a wide array of monitoring and setup indications. It is specially designed to reduce surface reflections and glare to maintain a clear, visible, bright view during outdoor recording. Menu items are easily selected using user-friendly setting cross keys.
Built-in Clip View & Management Functions
When the camera is switched to the playback mode, a clip viewer appears on the large LCD monitor and in the VF. (This signal may also be output through the HD/SD-SDI connector.) Clips are identified by timecode and with a user-defined filename with numeric increments.

Detailed information is displayed about each clip including recording format, resolution, and timecode start/stop, user bits, and creation date/time. Clips can be protected from accidental deletion or deleted if no longer needed. Damaged clips (due to improper eject, etc.) may be repaired with the "restore file" function. Though no special formatting is required, memory cards can be re-initialized in the GY-HM750 to an empty state even while the other card is recording.
Spot Exposure Meter
When shooting very high contrast scenes, the Spot Meter can be a very useful tool, letting the videographer monitor the dynamic range of an image on the LCD/VF and adjust the exposure of an object in the frame. There are 4 modes of spot metering: Max/Min, Max, Min, and Manual. For example, in a scene with varied illumination, the videographer may wish to meter an individual's face, and set the exposure accordingly. As the scene changes, the exposure can be corrected precisely to the desired subject.
Uncompressed Audio Recording w/Full Manual Control
The GY-HM750 captures audio with the same uncompromising quality as video. Two-channel 16-bit/48kHz uncompressed linear PCM (pulse code modulated) audio channels are recorded via the detachable shotgun microphone, or via a pair of balanced XLR connectors. Versatile input switching and independent channel assignment allow both mic and line-level sources (such as wireless receivers) to be connected, and phantom power is available on each XLR connector independently. Audio recording levels are controlled automatically or manually, with an audio level meter in the viewfinder and LCD monitor for easy monitoring.
Patented "Focus Assist" Function
Achieving exact focus with HD signals is critical. JVC's Focus Assist turns focusing into a fast, easy and accurate process. When Focus Assist is activated, the picture in the viewfinder becomes monochrome and all objects which are in focus take on a colored edge. Focus Assist works equally in the viewfinder as well as on the LCD panel. The Focus Assist function can be invoked by pressing the dedicated button on the control panel, or assigned to the RETURN button on the lens.

Connectivity

HD/SD-SDI, IEEE1394 Output
For live broadcast applications or for monitoring, the GY-HM750 provides an uncompressed, 4:2:2 full HD or downconverted SD signal via its HD/SD-SDI connector. The signal can come from either the camera or from memory playback. When downconverted, the video may be in either PAL or NTSC depending on the HD mode selected: 60Hz (23.98p, 29.97p, 59.94p/i) = NTSC, 50Hz (25p, 50p/i) = PAL. When 23.98p modes are selected, it will contain Varicam flags (720p24 mode only) to facilitate post production. The HD/SD-SDI output is via a BNC connector and includes embedded uncompressed audio. It is also possible to output the menus and clip viewer via the HD/SD-SDI output.

The IEEE-1394 output is via a 4-pin connector and provides SD or HD depending on mode. The audio output is HDV compliant in HD mode and DV compliant in SD mode.
Component or Composite Video Output (selectable)
Component HD signals can be output via the BNC connectors on the camera. The signal will always be in the format being captured or played back. (Cross converting to another format is not possible.) If a downconverted composite signal is desired, the output can be switched to provide NTSC (when HD is 23.98p/29.97p/59.94p/i) or PAL (when HD is 25p, 50p/i) signals. Downconverted composite signals can be especially useful when providing an SD feed for a live webcast while simultaneously recording full HD. The composite output can also be provided when playing back recorded high definition material.
DV/HDV Output via IEEE-1394
DV signals are available through the 4-pin IEEE-1394 connector when the camera is recording or live in the SD (DV) mode, or when playing back an SD recording. These signals can be recorded on most Firewire recorders and will be in either the NTSC or PAL mode depending on the 50/60Hz mode selected. The IEEE-1394 connector also outputs an HDV compatible transport stream when the camera is live or recording in the SP (19.7Mbps or 25Mbps) mode. No signal is available when playing back an HD recording.
Simultaneous DV/HDV Output via IEEE-1394
Downconverted standard-definition DV signals are available through the 4-pin IEEE-1394 connector. These signals can be recorded on most "Firewire" recorders, including the DRHD100GB100 dockable HDD recorder. Again, these signals will be in either the NTSC or PAL mode depending on the HD mode selected (60Hz or 50Hz) and can be output while recording full high-definition to the built-in SDHC memory cards, or when playing back HD material. When an SP high definition mode is selected (either 19.7Mbps or 25Mbps), the camera can also output an HDV transport stream compatible with the MR-HD100 through the IEEE-1394 connector.

Connectivity Options

DVB-ASI Module
The KA-AS790G Asynchronous Serial Interface (ASI) adapter provides a streaming MPEG transport stream from the camera's live HD signal, at either 19Mbps, 25Mbps or 35Mbps. The DVB-ASI compliant signal is provided via a 75 ohm BNC connector with latency under 300ms. The ASI signal is ideal for longer cable runs (up to 300 feet) and can be fed to a microwave or satellite transmitter. Playback signals are not available through this connector.
VF-HP790 LCD Studio Viewfinder
The VF-HP790 is an 8.4" XGA (1024 x 768 pixels) LCD studio viewfinder designed to work with GY-HM790, GY-HM750 or the GY-HM700. Designed to mount to the camera using the optional SA-K790 bracket, it is equipped with a large tally indicator, and screen hood. A fully digital interface provides all of the camera's viewfinder indications: safety markers, focus assist, power and clip management. The VF-HP790 is also provided with an HD-SDI input for monitoring an external signal.
Remote Camera Control Connector
A 6-pin remote connector provides a TTL interface to an optional JVC RM-LP25U, RM-LP57U, or RM-LP55U control unit. Extensive control options are available including shading, paint, iris, gamma level, knee, gain, shutter and black level. Functions vary with each unit.

I use this for everyday ENG & EFP. This has to be one of the lightest, SD/HD professional cameras that I have ever used. It still has the feel of a full size shoulder mount with out the weight. The dual recording cards make for greater flexibility in my workflow. The lens is great for everyday use and the filter wheel is electronically built in, just point and white balance. And, since the viewfinder is in color you should never come back with blue video. Pretty cool camera and the picture is fantastic.

After using this camera for 2 years I can give this advice:

Pros: Pretty good image if you have a decent lens on there.
    The LCD screen is great
    The media is cheap
The camera is light and easy to use

    Cons:
Dealing with JVC as a company.
The viewfinder is terribly small and has a narrow viewing angle. The mounting configuration is weak--held on by only two small screws.
Some of the plastic components tend to break (the mounting shoes).
The camera is generally fragile and does not hold up to the test of time.
The camera is very sensitive to moisture and humidity.
The SD cards write slowly after hitting pause-record. It's almost as bad as tape.
There have been documented issues with the optical block assembly (which contains the ND filters). If you get a bad optical block assembly, the back focus will be significantly different with the ND engaged versus the ND filter disengaged. It's bad enough that I avoide using the ND filter when possible. The fix is the replacement of the optical block (at about $1,200). JVC is hesitant to address the problem under warranty. They blame the limitations of the lens and its interaction with the camera. Be warned.

Comments about JVC GY-HM750 ProHD Compact Shoulder Camcorder w/Canon 14x Lens:

I use this camera in a variety of production environments and it does not perform well in low light situations. You can't see the noise in the viewfinder, but when you're looking at the footage later, it's bad. I have been trying to figure out if it was something I was doing wrong with the settings, but that's not the consensus. Better at 720 than 1080 for low light, but still not very good. Avoid shooting in the cinema preset, as that affects the noise level... stay in standard and stay away from stretching the black. Especially poor in low light on wide shots. And when I say "low-light" you'd be surprised at what I mean. I'm not talking about night time., but a wide room light with a 750w soft box and a pair of 250w fill lights. It also drives me nuts that there is no autofocus. However, the focus assist mechanism is very effective.

I had this camera on my wish list since it was released. Finally was able to save up enough to purchase. My only regret is that I didn't make it happen sooner!

Besides ease of use and great image quality, my clients love the fact that I don't have to drag around a bulky client monitor so they can see what I'm shooting.
Most of the time I just flip the LCD screen and snap it back flush to camera and everybody can see what I'm doing. It looks cool too!

Comments about JVC GY-HM750 ProHD Compact Shoulder Camcorder w/Canon 14x Lens:

We use two of these cameras and hope to purchase a third both in studio live switch and in the field. We also have other brands of cameras from Panasonic, Canon and Sony. What I really love is the controls. It has honest to goodness controls. Our other cameras are good too but I loath their menus whereas the JVC has real switches on all major controls. I would have preferred to have 1/2 inch sensors but these 1/3 inch do a wonderful job. Depth of field isn't as good on smaller sensors and low light isn't as great as our CMOS cameras but we don't have rolling shutter issues ether.

Shooting in whatever setup a client desires is great and we don't have to shell out tons of cash on SxS or P2 cards. We haven't had a single issue using SDHC cards and editing in native .MOV is great as well as recording in mp4 or AVI. Well balanced and well built I am very pleased with these cameras and have no hesitation in recommending them.

make sure to order a battery with this camera, this is if you do not have a battery!Zebra can not play out on SDI out, or any video out :(4:2:2 only on SDI out -- so no way to record 4:2:2 internally. We use the camera (without the lens) to transfer 8mm film. Works well.

This camera is a great buy for a reasonable (professional) price. Love the SD memory card system and the ability to capture good audio. Has every function I would ever need, and the large, rotating LCD is awesome. Make sure you get a good tripod AS WELL AS a JVC tripod adapter plate in order to get good steady video.

We shoot documentaries and training videos as well as music performance. This camera has nice lcd dispaly with all the information. It needs a good balanced fluid head tripod to get smooth video shots. I like the focus feature that illuminates in a color when image is focused. Manual focus only. We plan on getting an accesory for zooming so we don't need to reach around to the front to zoom while shooting. It's nice that this Broadcast quality Pro Camcorder is priced so that an individual can afford to purchase it. We chose this camera on price, features, and because it records to SD cards (class 6 or class 10 up to 32 GB) which cost less than CF cards or proprietary media used by other manufacturers. JVC is also used in TV station.
