It also offers a full set of photographic goodies in a very small package (4.1 x 2.4 x 1.3"/10.5 x 6.1 x 3.3 cm and weighing in at just 6.88 oz/195 g)--a 12.1MP CMOS high resolution sensor, a super-zoom 14x wide-angle 28-392mm lens (equivalent in 35mm format), and full 1920 x 1080 HD video with stereo sound, for starters.

It's also got the advanced HS system delivering clear, sharp photos with detail and nuance in low light, with high or low ISO images. Optical image stabilization keeps away the shaky pictures and video, and Smart AUTO recognizes and sets optimal exposure, shutter and focus settings for 32 predefined shooting situations. The Super Slow Motion Movie mode records video at 240fps for a very slow motion playback, and the High-Speed Burst mode allows you to shoot still photos at up to 8.1fps.

A large range of creative effects is available, including fisheye effect, miniature effect (stills and video), toy camera effect that creates a vignette similar to pinhole cameras, monochrome, super vivid, color accent, color swap (pick one color in a photo and replace that color with another of your choice), long shutter to blur moving objects for artistic effect, and many more. One of the most convenient features is the Movie Digest Mode, which will automatically record a short video clip (up to approximately 4 seconds) every time you shoot a still image. The camera will then combine an entire day's worth of clips into a single video--no editing required.

Experience the Power
The Canon HS SYSTEM takes the frustration out of low light shooting. The system delivers clear, blur-free shots with all the ambiance intact, and frees you from the sometimes unwanted effects of using the flash. Beautiful low light shots are possible at both low and high ISO speeds, and the dynamic range is expanded to retain maximum detail in highlight and shadow areas. The system is the result of two technologies brought together in a compact PowerShot. The first is the 12.1 Megapixel CMOS Sensor, which positions the light-receiving surface for optimal light reception. More light means clearer, blur-free images with plenty of detail and nuance, even in dark areas. Working together with the CMOS sensor to deliver the HS SYSTEM is Canon's advanced DIGIC 4 Image Processor, which actively reduces noise and delivers high speed image processing.

I am a professional photographer who absolutely hates hauling his Nikon D3s around for family events. I also don't particularly like carrying a still camera AND a video camera.

After doing my homework, I decided to give this little camera a try. I have to say that I have been blown away by the quality of the stills, and mostly by the high definition video! And it's SO freakin' small! Fits in my pants pocket easily.

You have to understand that I'm coming off of an "old" mini DV TAPE video camera. So, to go from that to this digital camera is totally like night and day.

I bought three new digital SDHC cards, and the best value of the three is the Lexar Platinum II 32gb 100x card. It is fast enough to record video at 1080p without a single hiccup. I did get a Sandisk 32gb Extreme card too, but I really wasted my money on that one only because the 200x speed is just not needed with this camera.

My main gripe is that the Canon batteries don't last long AT ALL! I bought a few extra $3.00 generic batteries that work as well or even better! You can find them on that online auction site and other e-tailers.

The image stabilization feature works superbly, but I do notice some "jittery" effects when panning the camera. I'm sure this is due to the camera trying to keep the image stabilized.

Man, with a 32gb card, you can shoot like forever with this camera! And hours of video will fit on the card. I'm in heaven! No more transferring poor-quality tape imagery (which takes forever) to my computer.

I decided to get a compact monopod for this camera because when doing video, it gets difficult to hold the camera for so long. I also bought the underwater housing for it to take it diving. Stills AND video under water! I can't wait to try that out!

I also got the little Canon HF-DC1 flash to go with my new system. It works well most of the time (it has to "see" the flash firing on the camera, so it pretty much won't work in bright light). It is also quite powerful even at its lowest power setting, so it works best on subjects kind of far away. Too close and you'll blow 'em out!

    I hope this review helps!

I've owned nearly every version of the Canon Digital ELPH SD Series since it first came out. I've also owned a 10D, 20D, 50D, T2i and 5DMII. I like the SD series P&S for when I don't want to carry my SLR. In the past, I've had great results with all the SD series for point and shoot photos. I decided to try the megazoom this time, instead of the smaller SD series assuming that the newer P&S camera would be at least as good as the SD cameras I've had in years past.

Unfortunately, I've been very disappointed with the results. In AUTO mode, the camera chooses a high ISO (1600) and slow shutterspeed (1/15 or slower) unless there's a ton of light (bright sun only). Most of the photos are very grainy or have motion blur. AUTO mode also rarely uses the pop up flash in low light conditions (even when not blocked by your left finger). Fortunately I understand the manual settings and can override these issues most of the time. For decent results, I won't shoot anything higher than ISO 200 or Shutter Speed slower than 1/60. Yet with those settings, the camera has very poor medium to low light results. The pop up flash is weak, so unless you're close to your subject in low light, you will not get high quality images.

My older Canon SD point & shoot cameras take much better quality photos, and without all the hassle of trying to use manual mode all the time. Ignore the resolution, it doesn't matter when the photos are so grainy or blurry.

A few other minor complaints as well: there's no easy way to delete the last photo taken, you can have to go into play mode then into the menu. As others have mentions, the pop-up flash is often blocked by where you'd naturally place your left index finger. It's slow to focus. Flash is just weak, period. The zoom is slow and not smooth. I've also inadvertently bumped the mode dial several times away from the mode I wanted. It's also somewhat bulkier than the SD series, so I had to buy a different case. For more bulk, I expected better results.

I've been so frustrated with this camera compared to all my previous Canon's. I expected much better results, especially considering it got decent reviews. It seems very uncharacteristic for Canon. I didn't keep the box, wish I did, I'd return it.

I wouldn't buy this camera. I gave one to my wife for Christmas and the lens covered failed to open properly within four months. I sent it into Canon for a warranty covered repair. The labor cost for a warranty repair and to send it back is $120.16. The flat labor cost is $100 for a warranty repair! Ouch. I love Canon. I have a 5D MarkIII, a 7D, and four L series lenses. But I won't buy another Canon point and shoot.

On the low side: flash ergonomy is not the best. It is being blocked by your fingers at power up and therefore doesn't open. Not very good grip.

Comments about Powershot SX230 HS Digital Camera (Blue):

The video was amazing for such a small and inexpensive camera. I purchased it as a pocket "walk-around" camera that has a longer zoom than my Panasonic LX5. The image quality is great - my only complaint is how poor the LCD visibility is in bright sunlight. I'd suggest looking for an accessory LCD screen hood, shade, loupe, or whatever you want to call it.

Great camera, fast response to all functions. Pictures are amazing for a compact system. Time and gps data is very helpful for our business use. Only thing I'd warn someone is that Red is actually a hot pink magenta type color on the camera body. We had to rename an employee Glenda when he takes this camera :)

I own a canon 450 eos, and i don't always want to carry it with me especially when light is not good. However i want to have a good camera withme all the time and not just a tourist camera, a good one. This is the ideal product. I

Love the Gps feature and the mode settin Hz like movie digest. The fact it has a 14x zoom gives me the ability to.get get telephoto shots when I have left my dslr in at .

some reviews said that the battery runs out fast, but it didnt happen to me :) anyway i bought another one just in case...

The Flash location is a little bit annoying but its still fine :)

We use our SX230 for vacation, marching band competitions, night & day stills and videos. The quality is quite clear, the software easy to use, and the camera is a dream. An 8G memory card, (16G is even better) will hold more than an entire 7 day vacation with multiple shots and videos. I recommend buying a backup battery to hold in your case already charged.

This is our second SX230 purchased...as a gift for our college-bound child.
