The Logan Simplex Elite Model 750-1 mat cutter is an upgrade and improvement to the Simplex Plus Model 750. It is easy to set up and accurate in operation. However, the instructions, as complete as they are, do NOT tell you that the squaring arm must be adjusted properly in order to ensure a square cut. There are two screws in the channel of the base which the arm slides under and another screw on the opposite side of the channel which applies pressure on the arm to keep it in position. Unless you back the keeper screws out enough to cause a slight force fit of the squaring arm into the channel, the pressure screw will allow the arm to pivot. Once I figured out that the keeper screws could be adjusted, I get perfectly square cuts every time.
In all other ways, the mat cutter is ideal for those who want to mount and mat pictures for themselves. The 750-1 includes a bevel cutter for cutting mats, a straight cutter for cutting foam board, an 8-ply bevel cutter for cutting thicker mats, a glass cutter, and an acrylic cutter.
        Overall, an excellent mat cutter.

At the price, the Simplex Elite looked like an attractive package of tools for cutting mats (up to 8 ply), backing boards, paper, glass, and plexi. So far, I have used it only on foam core, paper, and 4 ply mats. The build quality is rather crude, almost like a home-brew project from someone's garage. Measuring scales and index marks are installed via plastic stick-on labels. Some of the index marks on the cutting tools were applied tilted or at the wrong position. In any case, the factory-installed indexes have limited usefulness. Because of variations in board thicknesses, and the way these tools work, you have to readjust blade positions and/or apply your own index marks. This takes experimentation, so plan on butchering a few practice boards before starting anything important.Several of the cutting tools are designed to ride on an extruded aluminum rail, guided by notched plastic pieces that fit over a rib on the rail. The plastic guides for the included Bevel Mat Cutter (Model 702) fit very tight, causing a lot of friction drag when cutting. The included 8-Ply Mat Cutter (Model 711) would not even fit on the rail until I adjusted the guides. The kit includes production stops, small blocks which can be clamped on the rail to set the limit positions of a cut. The accuracy of those stops was compromised by small, flexing bits of plastic protruding from the guides on the Bevel Mat Cutter. Easily fixed by trimming the excess plastic, but this should have been done at the factory. There is also a Paper Trimmer tool (Model 710-1), with rotating round blade, for cutting thin paper. It is in no way comparable to a RotaTrim. The round blade on a RotaTrim is much larger, and spring loaded to ride against a steel straight edge - so there are effectively two mated cutting edges, for a precise shearing action. The round blade in the Logan trimmer has no mated edge. I have not been able to get consistent cuts with this tool, and I would rate it as useless.Other reviews reported that the kit included an instructional DVD. Mine did not. Perhaps Logan is assuming that customers will get the information from their web site.I am not impressed with the quality control at Logan's manufacturing facility. For basic mat cutting, it will probably be adequate, but good results require a fair amount of tweaking and practice. Knowing what I know now, I would probably choose the cheaper Simplex Classic, and buy the other tools separately, only if and when I needed them.

Comments about Logan Graphics 750-1 Simplex Elite Mat Cutter (40" Cut Length):

I've used the Logan 750 to cut a variety of window mats, backings, glass, and plex. It's very easy to use, the quality is very high, and the results are great. My only complaint is that the plex cutter is a free-hand tool, so the results weren't as good. I'd prefer a tool that hooks onto the cutting rail, as all the other tools do. One other minor complaint is that the unit was slightly out of square when I got it, so I had to make some adjustments, but once done, everything was just fine.I used to work as a professional framer, and this unit is easier to use than some of the industrial models we had.

Comments about Logan Graphics 750-1 Simplex Elite Mat Cutter (40" Cut Length):

I purchased this unit so I could begin to mat my own photos rather than having them done at the framing shop. This unit came highly recommended, so I thought I would give it a try. I will be using it to cut maybe 10-15 mats per month.

So far it has been a breeze to use and produces great results. Being new to cutting my own mats I didnt know what to expect, but they are turning out great. So far its just been simple mats and cuts, but as I get more comfortable, I will begin to start trying more advanced cuttings.

Comes with all the tools I think I will need at this point. Its well made and well packaged.

I have not found anything I am not satisfied with yet. Seems to be perfect for the non-high volume user.

Comments about Logan Graphics 750-1 Simplex Elite Mat Cutter (40" Cut Length):

The mat cutter portion of this is all I have used thus far, so my review will pertain to that portion only. Assembly was quick and relatively intuative. I quickly set about trying to cut my first mat. Sizing the mat was easy using the backer board from the frame I had purchased. The straight cutter sliced through the mats like butter. I then used the pencil method to make my beveled cuts. Again, the beveled cutter worked like a champ and I have a clean cut double mat for my picture. All-in-all, it took me about 15 mins total and that is with having two children interrupting me periodically while I was cutting. I am extremely happy we got this cutting system and look forward to trying more intricate designs!

Helpful things to keep in mind:
                  - Make sure to keep the pencil tight against the guide if using the pencil method for mats, if not, your cut will not line up with the pencil marks. (Not a really big deal because they are on the back of the mat, but good to know so you do not worry the cuts will be wrong)
                  - When you start cutting with either cutter, make sure to push down all the way through the mat before pulling, or you may have to make a second pass, which can be risky if the mat has shifted since the first cut.
                  - The slip sheet provided works great to ensure the front of the mat does not fray or have jagged edges.
                  - I have found the blades dull rather quickly, so you might replace them after you have cut 3-4 mats, versus waiting for jagged edges to tell you to change the blade.

My desire to learn framing, along with my passion for photography, led me to purchase this unit, and am I glad I did! While it takes a little RTFM, the overall set up, is pretty intuitive. Reading reviews from (some) others, made me a little apprehensive about the build quality and durability, but I can tell you, the nit pickers out there are WRONG! There are ample warnings about over tightening knobs, and if you are inclined to criticize because you don't believe what the manual says, shame on you! BUT....the 750-1 Simplex Elite Mat Cutter also comes with an instructional DVD and a how to book. Couldn't ask for moreThis model has everything you need to start cutting the materials needed for framing, i.e. mats, matboard, etc. and they even threw in a glass/acrylic cutter + a paper trimmer. Learning how to cut mats without over/under cutting, is an experience and practice, practice, practice thing. The product does what it is supposed to do, and I would HIGHLY recommend this to someone who wants to mat and frame their artwork/pictures, etc.

The Logan Graphics 750-1 Simplex Elite Mat Cutter is the first ever item I have purchased from B&H that I don't like and think it is overpriced for what it is supposed to do. Of course this is not B&H's fault. One would be much better off buying the cheapest model and then obtaining the extra cutting equipment as you need it. Here is why. In the DVD that comes with the mat cutter there is an explanation of how to square off a raw piece of mat board. Well it the mat board is not square to begin with there is no way to do this. I called Logan to inquire as to the proper method and let them know that the mat board was not square. The customer service person, although very pleasant, told me that in the book that comes with the mat board it explains that raw mat boards should be measured for squaring with a T-square and certainly was un-interested in my plight. Well if the right angle arm or the cutting arm is not square one could never do production work with this board. I will tell you I have successfully cut mats and some quite complicated but with my own math and experience. One can do the same thing with the less expensive models. I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Logan Graphics 750-1 Simplex Elite Mat Cutter (40" Cut Length):

Thus far, I have used the paper cutter, the straight cutter, and the bevel cutter. The paper and straight cutters were easy to use. After a little practice I was able to make perfect bevel cuts. When I received the mat cutter, the mat guide was parallel but the squaring arm needed re-squaring. That was a simple task using a carpenter's square. The crawl pin on the 8-ply mat cutter was jammed. Logan replaced it and the new unit was fine. The wheel shaft and cutting wheel on the glass cutter were not on the cutter when I received it and I thought they had been left off. I unfolded the box the cutter came in and found the parts in one of the folds. The documentation is well written but some of the drawings are too small, particularly on the figures where small parts are being discussed. The DVD and online videos are much better. I would have given a 5 star rating had the QC and written documentation been better.

Comments about Logan Graphics 750-1 Simplex Elite Mat Cutter (40" Cut Length):

I'm a novice when it comes to mat cutting but I was able to accurately
create a mat with a window cutout with no errors on my first attempt.
The instructional book and the superb videos that come with the unit
provided all the necessary info to do the job. The straight cuts and
bevels were all perfect and everything was square.
Of course nothing is really perfect so here goes some slight
                                  shortcomings of the Simplex 750-1:

~When you're pulling the bevel tool towards you, it's difficult to keep
the tool's guide mark in view since your right hand is in the way. You
can avoid this problem simply by setting the stop at the bottom and
relying on it rather than your eye to prevent an overcut. Logan's
directions show you both ways but it's just a silly design error in my
                                  opinion.

~The small plastic stop screw on the bevel tool arrived broken. I called
Logan and they sent me two replacement screws which arrived within a
week. Rather than wait to use the unit, I temporarily replaced the
broken plastic stop screw with a #10 metal set screw.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with the Simplex and the Logan company
itself. And, at the great price B&H has on this unit, I don't think you
                                  can go wrong.

Comments about Logan Graphics 750-1 Simplex Elite Mat Cutter (40" Cut Length):

I have been wanting to get into matting and framing because my husband is an exceptional wildlife photographer and I am always shocked by the cost of professional framing. I was initialy going to get a cheaper model, but my husband talked me into this one because it does EVERYTHING - in addition to regular mats, it has all the tools to cut 8-ply mats, foamboard, acrylic, paper, and even glass. So far I have only used it for mats (only had it for 4 days) but I am thoroughly excited by the possibilities. The instructions that come with it are very clear, it is easy to use, and the construction is very solid. As an extra nice touch, the framing book that comes with it gives you all sorts of other cool ideas. Looks like I may have to start making my own frames soon.

Comments about Logan Graphics 750-1 Simplex Elite Mat Cutter (40" Cut Length):
