Sigma's 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG HSM II Lens (For Canon) is designed for use with full-frame digital cameras, and offers a dramatically ultra-wide, minimally distorted zoom lens with a field of view from 122° to 84.1°. This range makes it ideal for the tightest of interiors, as well as for dramatic landscape photography. Using a camera with an APS-C sensor will give you an effective range of 17-35mm, also a very attractive wide-angle zoom range.

One Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass element and four "F" Low Dispersion (FLD) glass elements compensate for color aberration and deliver improved image quality. Three glass mold elements and one hybrid aspherical lens give you compact, lightweight construction (3.3" diameter x 4.7"/23.6 oz) and improved performance.

Super Multi-Layer Coating on the lens reduces flare and ghosting, while the Inner Focusing system keeps the length of the lens unchanged when changing focus. The splash-proof design helps protect the 12-24mm lens from the elements. This versatile, sturdy lens will put drama into just about any subject you choose.

Equipped with HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) for quiet, high-speed focusing, it also offers Full Time Manual Focusing.

Designed for use with full frame digital cameras. May also be used with smaller APS-C size sensors with a corresponding effective increase in focal length to about 17-35mm with most cameras

Even though there are a few flaws which I shall point out, I'm giving the Sigma 12-24 II 5 stars because it can produce some outstanding images. To me, great landscape shots (which is what this lens is all about) include details from both foreground and background, which only an ultra wide angle lens is capable to produce. The 12-24 II at 12mm wins the race in that respect. Secondly, the images need to be sharp corner to middle to corner, covering foreground and background. Again, the 12-24 II is the winner. I have tested it against the Tokina 16-28, the Canon 17-40, and the Samyang 14mm (easily worst of the bunch).
To be fair, I didn't compare it with the Canon 14mm or 16-35mm, as those lenses were well beyond my budget. But my understanding is these are close to the 17-40mm, which the 12-24 II barely beat out in my testing.

    Now some flaws:
The dang lens hood/cap keeps falling off! It's too loose!
Switches from auto to manual focus constantly when the camera is attached with my black rapid strap.
Some green flare artifacts show up when pointed near the sun.
Barrel distortion is quite heavy when shooting buildings at the 12mm end.
Not the smallest and lighest UWA lens around.

Again, even with these flaws, I still give it 5 stars mainly because it is capable of producing some outstanding landscape images, better than most of it's competition.

I use wide angle for architectural images and this lens is so great for my work. Almost no edge distortion when level, super wide angle and such a compact lens. I will be using this lens often.

Comments about Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG HSM II Lens (For Canon):

I have been using this lens on my D700 for eighteen months now to shoot low light architectural interiors. The combination of the extreme wide angle & the exceptional low light capabilities of the camera have allowed me to capture images way beyond anything I could ever achieve before.
Yes I could dredge up a few minor complaints, but these are far outweighed
by the positive results & wonderful photographs.

Comments about Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG HSM II Lens (For Canon):

I too was dubious about whether this lens would be sharp, and was pleasantly surprised to find it very sharp, certainly much more so than I was expecting. You can get shots with this lens you just cannot get with any other. Yes, it has the normal very wide angle distortion, but work with it and be aware of it and it is not a problem and use it creatively. My lens cap doesn't fall off though I would have preferred a positive catch to ensure it couldn't, and yes, filters would be nice - at least a gel filter holder at rear - and you do have to be careful. But there are filter holders and filters out there that can be used for very wide angles with no threads (Wonderpano?) if you really need that and are prepared to pay for it. It is also a bit slow, I guess. Overall, a super fun lens and great value.

We used to have the Sigma 8-16mm for our Canon 40d and it was our go to lens for landscape photography. When we upgraded to the full-frame 6d we bought this lens. We love it just as much as the 8-16mm and it is still our go to lens for landscape photography!

I was a bit dubious as to whether this lens would satisfy me as far as image quality was concerned but it certainly does. Quite sharp edge to edge and no more distortion than is acceptable with lenses this wide. A little chromatic aberration was fixed with a single click in Lightroom 5. The aperture is a tad small but I can live with that for this quality at this price. Excellent value. My lens was the Canon fitting, for FF (5DIII).

            * Great for when I want to take as much territory as possible in a single shot - especially when the conditions are not conducive to shooting a panoramic.

            * Enables me to take unique photographs that are only possible with a lens of this ultra-width.

            * Enables me to deliberately exaggerate or diminish the apparent size of specific subjects.

            * Frequently provides me with a distinct advantage when I'm shooting in competitive situations.

Comments about Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG HSM II Lens (For Canon):

Landscape and archictectural images. Great at f8 and above.

The lens hood is designed to close tolerances (diameter wise) and is difficult to replace; I had already scratched the built-in hood. It must be exactly aligned. The worst is that even with such a tight fit, it will fall off the lens when walking with it in place. This hood is similar to the one in the 15 mm Sigma f 2.8 that has similar problem. Contacted Sigma that forwarded my feedback to Japan.

Another issue is that the zoom ring rotates in the opposite direction from those in Canon lenses and goes from 24 to 12 mm instead of the reverse of most lenses. It gets confusing.

Comments about Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG HSM II Lens (For Canon):

I was leery about Sigma lenses as I have never really been happy with any that I have tried. Then again, I have been unhappy with a LOT of Canon lenses too. So, after trying many ultra-wides including the Canon 14mm prime and Canon 16-35 2.8L, I surprisingly found this lens to be the sharpest on my Canon 5D MIII. I am very picky about image quality, but know the limitations for ultra-wides so I have not felt the need to shoot brick walls or test patterns with this one. I have just shot real-world pictures and have been really happy with the results. Distortion at the far edges is easily fixed (PS Elements has the easiest ways to fix every kind of distortion - I like it better than LR, DXO and PT Lens). Yes, the Canon 14mm will have less distortion, but at almost 3x the price - plus no flexibility of having a range to choose from which is really important when shooting wide. Since you know the trade-offs for 12-14mm, you can save those for when the distortion works FOR you and use a little longer for the rest. Great to have flexibility.

Comments about Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG HSM II Lens (For Canon):

I researched this lens quite a bit before making a purchase. So many, if not all of the reviews, stressed that quality control is an issue with this Sigma product and your results will depend upon the copy you receive. With this in mind I fully expected to have to send the lens back to Sigma for them to bring it up to specs.

When I first received the lens I immediately shot a side by side comparison with my Canon 16-35mm lens. To my surprise the Sigma matched the Canon at equal focal lengths for sharpness and contrast, in fact the Sigma exhibited better control over distortion and CA

That being satisfied I next used Focus Tune to calibrate the Sigma to my 5D3. I then compared the lens again to the 16-35 as well as to my crop camera (7D) and its two wide angle lenses - the Canon 10-22 and the Sigma 8-16. Again I was very pleasantly surprised that the Sigma 12-24 on my 5D3 held its own and matched if not slightly exceeded sharpness and contrast of all my other wide angle lenses - center to boarder edges. The one exception would be the Sigma 8-16 which narrowly was a bit sharper but we are talking about 5% (maybe) viewing at 200% magnification.

Needless to say I am very happy with my Sigma 12-24mm lens. Granted it is a specific purpose lens; the convex front lens does not allow filters but that is why I still plan on keeping/using my Canon 16-35. It is about the same size as my Canon 16-35 but that extra 4 mm to allow you to go wider is quite spectacular.

One point of advise, because of the convex properties of the front glass element, obviously be careful of dirt/scratches, etc. Also, when focusing, make use of your depth of field; focus shy of infinity so your lateral field of view will remain as sharp as possible.

I used this product with my Canon 5D Mark III. Nice lens, built well, I didn't think it looked very sharp. The 12mm looks great but overall the lens did not give off the sharpness I was looking for.

Comments about Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG HSM II Lens (For Canon):

Comments about Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG HSM II Lens (For Canon):

This is the second Sigma 12-24 I have owned. (The first bought in 2004 for Nikon) I'm using this with a Canon 5D mk 2; an unforgiving camera which will show up the weakness in any lens.
The extreme perspective at 12mm is what drew me to this lens and its giving spectacular results. It's very much a specialist optic, which needs skill to get the best out of it.
Like the previous 12-24 mk 1, it needs to be stopped down to get the best results. At F8 to F11 its sharp; even at the edges at 12mm. At f 5.6 it's a soft at the edges but sharp at the centre. Distortion at 12mm can be a distraction; but at 15mm barrel distortion is negligible and this is still ultra wide for FF. Used on a cropped sensor camera the distortion is cropped out so expect little or none even at 12mm.
I compared the results at 24mm with my Canon 24-105 and I would say without doubt that the Sigma is just as sharp and is more usable as there is virtually no linear distortion at all; (The Canon is disappointing in that respect).
The only downside to this lens is the inability to use filters due to the bulbous lens. You do need to watch for lens flare. Its not too serious an issue but it will happen in sunlight if you are not careful!
The slow aperture can be a problem in low light; but at 12mm if you have no choice; you can hand hold the lens and get good results at 1/15 sec.
This is very much a lens suited to architecture and landscape; so a tripod is needed especially for interiors. For those using cropped sensor cameras a 10-20 Sigma would be more appropriate and 30% cheaper.
For Full Frame there is nothing like it on the market for specialist utlra wide applications.

Regardless of subject matter, this lens produces somewhat soft images at all apertures, especially at or around 12mm. It is also somewhat bulky and heavy.

Comments about Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG HSM II Lens (For Canon):

Great lens! This updated model has really improved on the chromatic aberrations issue the previous model had, although not perfected it's still a huge improvement. This lens produces very sharp images and has a very dynamic look. It is quickly becoming my favorite lens.
I rated this lens 4 stars instead of 5 because of 2 issues 1. The AF/M focus switch seems really cheep (I'm afraid I'm gonna break it) and 2. The vignetting on this lens can get pretty bad at 12mm on a full frame chip. nothing that can't be fixed in post but it's still an issue.
Overall this is a very fun lens to play around with and I'm very happy with it.
