Photography discussions are full of desert island scenarios; "if you had to choose a single lens or if you had to choose a single light..." Well if you had to choose a single light shaping tool, you might do well to pick the white diffusion Westcott 7' Parabolic Umbrella.

First of all it's a really big, broad light source that wraps light around your subject yielding clean highlights and rich open shadows. But due to the special shape of the umbrella there's a unique mix of soft enveloping light with the kind of crisp detail you only get from reflectors. This umbrella has a unique design structurally as well. The shaft is double walled for strength, but it tapers to 7 mm to fit Elinchrom and other European flash heads. Instead of bendable metal, the 16 inner ribs are made of durable fiberglass.

This white diffusion is the softest version of the parabolic umbrella. Used in standard bounce mode, some of the light escapes through the material, slightly raising the ambient light level and lowering contrast while most of it is directed towards your subject. If you want a harder light, turn the umbrella around and aim the convex side at your subject and punch your light source through it. In both modes you can vary the light quality and output by changing the light-to-umbrella distance along the shaft.

You can also use this umbrella as a scrim over your subject to diffuse harsh light sources like the sun in situations like fashion catalog work outdoors or at the beach. Any way you use it, with the Westcott 7' Parabolic Umbrella less is definitely more.

Measures 7.25' (2.2 m) in diameter
White diffusion material allows you to use the umbrella in standard bounce mode or shoot through it like a large soft box
Constructed using 16 durable fiberglass ribs

7 mm tapered umbrella shaft tip
Carry case with shoulder strap is lightweight and constructed of heavy-duty nylon

I own the silver version and love it. The shoot thru provides a wonderful light with soft falloff. I also use it outdoors as a diffuser to shade subjects for portraits. Works great! At this price I can't see why anyone wouldn't have one just in case. Works great indoors or out. Just beware of the size indoors and the wind load outdoors. Sand bags are your friend outdoors.

This umbrella is well made, however there is a hot spot in the center, probably because this umbrella is so big. Consequently because the light is more hot in the center, the color is also different when the subject is placed in the center of the umbrella and when they are closer to the sides.

I sold this umbrella in the end and use the Wescott Parabolic white reflective umbrella with the black lining and the diffuser in the front.

Comments about Westcott 7' Parabolic Umbrella (White Diffusion):

While the umbrella is fairly light (for the size), it will still put a lot of stress on the umbrella holder; therefore, I would not use a cheap plastic clamp. Instead, consider using a sturdy metal umbrella clamp like Manfrotto 026 unit. Also, a sturdy stand is a must.

It is well-made and the large size allows for really soft, diffuse light. While the quality of "diffuseness and softness" may not be quite good as a large soft box, it is almost as good and is a lot easier to deploy in the field as some soft boxes are rather fiddly to set up and break down.

On a windy day, I would not trust just sandbags to hold this thing down. It has multiple uses and relatively value priced for what it can do. I also have silver backed as well as the black/white ones. They work great as well.
              Highly recommended.

I used this umbrella as a single shoot-thru and was delighted with the soft light I got from it. Then I paired it with the 7' white reflective parabolic and using it as a fill light, got some incredible light for portraits. Highly recommended!

Comments about Westcott 7' Parabolic Umbrella (White Diffusion):

It is a good umbrella, very big (which is the point), and well made. It is a bit heavy so make sure you use a solid stand and clamp. You may also need weights on the stand for counterbalance, especially outdoors.

Was going between a scrim or this umbrella to diffuse the harsh sunlight. Does a great job, can also be used as a prop for the model to carry. Of course much better on the wallet and easier to setup

This is the second 7' westcott umbrella that we have purchased. This white diffusion model will be a nice addition to other modifers that we use in the studio. All work is portrait related and most is indoors. The first unit was a white reflective umbrella. We do like the spread of light for larger groupings and have used it for singles too. very happy.

Was able to get this on sale and for the price works great! Lot bigger than I thought, glad I pulled the trigger.

Comments about Westcott 7' Parabolic Umbrella (White Diffusion):

This is not a true Parabolic like the archetype of all parabolics: the Broncolor Para. It's not the right shape, and it's a shoot-thru modifier. But.. DANG it's a very good large source for a great price. I had the good fortune of noticing a holiday sale at B&H, which made this umbrella just too good to pass up. Still, I would have paid the (very reasonable) retail tag on this item, because I already own, and like, the black/silver version.

It's not really 7-feet across, it's more like 6-feet in diameter. (Maybe the umbrella measures 7-feet on a curve.) I'll spare you the common sense warnings about wind and sand bags (ad infinitum) but methods to hold and swivel this big modifier are worth mentioning. If I'm using 3 speedlites mounted on a Triple Threat, then I usually use a regular 2.5" grip head on a light stand to grab the shaft. Or boom it out slightly on a grip arm to get it away from the stand for tilt. If you're planning on using an umbrella swivel, well, DON'T. Do yourself a favor and get a proper grip head.

Makes beautiful blow-everywhere light with studio flash heads too.

I like it and will keep it. The light is nice coming from this thing. If used with a strobe reflector the umbrella rod bows under it's own weight. Without a reflector I scoot the umbrella closer to the light and the umbrella rod is fine.

I bought this during B&H's recent sale for half the regular price, so yeah it was an excellent deal. Bought one for myself and asked my employer to buy one too. It's plenty big and thus needs a sturdy stand to hold it. Love the soft wraparound light it produces. Have barely scratched the surface of what I can do with it. Construction appears to be solid but I have no experience with Westcott umbrellas to comment on longevity.

Great sun diffusion if you have an assistant or extra person available. Don't trust it to a stand outside if there is any wind at all.

And if it comes up a rain, everyone can stay dry too.

For the price, this is a pretty good Umbrella. It softens the light more than my smaller soft box. The difference is particularly noticeable when shooting more than one person. The umbrella itself is lightweight, compact to transport, and sturdy. The shaft, however, could stand to be a little stiffer. It flexes somewhat as the umbrella is tilted horizontally (in the direction that throws light horizontally). It is still structurally sound, so I guess this is just the design. I'm very happy with it, though, and would definitely recommend it.
