Photography discussions are full of desert island scenarios; "if you had to choose a single lens or if you had to choose a single light..." Well if you had to choose a single light shaping tool, you might do well to pick the white diffusion Westcott 7' Parabolic Umbrella.

First of all it's a really big, broad light source that wraps light around your subject yielding clean highlights and rich open shadows. But due to the special shape of the umbrella there's a unique mix of soft enveloping light with the kind of crisp detail you only get from reflectors. This umbrella has a unique design structurally as well. The shaft is double walled for strength, but it tapers to 7 mm to fit Elinchrom and other European flash heads. Instead of bendable metal, the 16 inner ribs are made of durable fiberglass.

This white diffusion is the softest version of the parabolic umbrella. Used in standard bounce mode, some of the light escapes through the material, slightly raising the ambient light level and lowering contrast while most of it is directed towards your subject. If you want a harder light, turn the umbrella around and aim the convex side at your subject and punch your light source through it. In both modes you can vary the light quality and output by changing the light-to-umbrella distance along the shaft.

You can also use this umbrella as a scrim over your subject to diffuse harsh light sources like the sun in situations like fashion catalog work outdoors or at the beach. Any way you use it, with the Westcott 7' Parabolic Umbrella less is definitely more.

Measures 7.25' (2.2 m) in diameter
White diffusion material allows you to use the umbrella in standard bounce mode or shoot through it like a large soft box

7 mm tapered umbrella shaft tip
Carry case with shoulder strap is lightweight and constructed of heavy-duty nylon

Well the only beef I have with this umbrella is the middle shaft. Honestly as an old customer of their products I always admired their standard of of well build and well made materials. I have had smaller umbrellas with 1/3 of the weight of this 7' that the same materials and I've had fall apart. Its feels like its gonna break right in the half from one moment to another. I guess we'll see.

Very nicely made. Love the case. Wonderful light.
Not a true parabolic though. But it would be hard to design a parabola without knowing where the foci is. Especially if you have multiple sources of light, like what I'm doing with 3 speed lights. So its better off that this is not a true parabolic umbrella. At least for me.

Made well but u can't use a cheap small light with it. The weight of it puts a lot of leverage on strobe. Light covers well but is too soft for my taste.

Comments about 7' Parabolic Umbrella (Silver):

I watched several reviews of this and all had nothing but good things to say. I got it and was excited to use it. I opened it up and it's huge, which is not new news, although in person it's still impressive. I set up my metal stand because I knew the slightest breeze would be caught by this. Now here is where the fact that although only being 2.5lbs this is heavy. I tried to set this up on my Neewer ball mount/umbrella holder. It is made of metal and when I tried to tighten into position, it just would fall down til the umbrella came to rest on the stand itself. I finally just got an allen wrench out of the tool box and tightened it. After some work I was finally able to get it working and into position. So I guess I typed all that just to warn people that this will not work on your normal cheap @ stands with out some reinforcement.

Comments about 7' Parabolic Umbrella (Silver):

                      This thing is big.

But the open front diameter is not 7', it is ~6' when opened (assuming the 7' is measured around the back curve)

The shaft might be reinforced but it doesn't feel like it when mounting to a stand and adjusting angles. The shaft flexes and the whole umbrella sways in a manner that makes it feel like it will not hold its own weight when connected towards the end of the shaft.

Has not been an issue yet, just doesn't feel as robust as I would expect to support something of this size and weight.

I have no comparison to tell if it is more robust feeling than other large umbrellas.

White a little softer than the silver obviously

I would get at least 1. Of the 1 stop soft elastic covers. Turns it intones super soft light

A really big lighting instrument for really soft light that only takes a few seconds to set up. This is the second one of these I've bought... it's not super durable but then again it doesn't cost that much and it saves a ton of time setting up. I don't want to be without one. It's like bouncing a light off a really big white wall only you don't need the wall.

Comments about 7' Parabolic Umbrella (Silver):

I have many different types of softboxes and modifiers, but this one is top dog now.

Once you break it out of the box it's as easy as opening an umbrella.

The quality of the light that you get with this 7' beast is unbelievable. I also have a 70" octabox that was my favorite piece of gear, but once I set this modifier up there was no looking back.

I use it in my studio and with a studio strobe or even a speedlight it gives me the light to do full length shots. Nice soft even wrap around light.

This umbrella is fantastic, light weight and easily assessable. The size can be a problem in small areas, I'd suggest something smaller. Thus far on point.

This is very large and you will need plenty of room. Other than that it's awesome!
